"Are you telling me that we are nothing more than... guinea pigs?"
"I... don't know what that is. A creature of some sort, I assume. The point is, they used planets like yours, planets they saw as lesser and worthless, as testing grounds. They designed the mutagen to force the evolution and gene alteration of different species, all for their own goal.
They would mutate and change in billions upon trillions of different ways. From the slightest changes that could result in the same end result, to wild differences that could produce something fantastic... or something monstrous.
The System, the Artificial Intelligence integrated into the soul of every being effected by the mutagen, would track their progress and changes, then report it all back to the Apotheosis group.
They sent out millions to different planets, and simply waited for the results. Their tests were completed with different variables, and they didn't have to do anything.
If they were unlucky and the planet collapsed, the population eradicated, then it meant nothing to them. If they were lucky... then they would have the template for wondrous new mutations and knew exactly what they could do.
All they had to do was pick the ones they liked, extract the data collection from their soul and harvest the gene sequence to use for themselves. A process that kills the subject.
They turned the galaxy into their own breeding ground of test subjects, all for the grand goal of their group. Apotheosis. To become gods, true gods."
Seth's entire body trembled, his teeth gritting and fists clenching once more as his emotions bubbled and boiled to the surface. His lips parted and, unable to hold it back anymore, he let it loose as he started... to laugh.
It was an utterly depraved and hysterical laugh as he realised the reality of their situation. They weren't guinea pigs. They weren't good enough to be guinea pigs.
They were a living, breathing Gacha machine! All their pain and suffering, countless planets going through the same horrific existence as they were. All just so some advanced aliens could get an SSR Gacha pull and get the powers of their dreams.
It was simply... ridiculous. So truly and utterly, pathetically ridiculous.
The others gave Seth strange glances while he had what could only be called a mental breakdown, but in all honesty... they couldn't exactly blame him.
While Seth continued to laugh at the joke that their suffering had been turned into, Astra narrowed her eyes at Prometheus. Her cutting death glare burrowing into the Immortal dragon, still giving him chills despite the sheer difference in their power levels.
"You failed to mention your part in all of this. Are we just rolls of the dice for you? Is he your prize?"
"No. While it is true that I came here intentionally, I did not plant the same system on this planet, nor was this outcome my goal... Not exactly.
My Immortality came from one like you. From the slaughter of an innocent soul who did nothing but be born with the wrong genes. It was a gift forced onto me by my mother before they understood the price of it.
When I discovered what had happened to me, and why, I decided to put an end to it. I stole the system from the Apotheosis group, but I altered it. I made it my own, so that not only would your people have freedom from their control and greed, but you would have the ability to grow your power.
Perfecting your genes, then growth beyond your limitations. It is the same steps they took, only controlled. I made it so that those who were lucky enough to develop the desired powers could keep them for themselves, and ascend to godhood on their own merit rather than being food for them. I wanted to guide you to be more than your intended purpose
Naturally... they did not take kindly to this betrayal."
"You crashed here... Didn't you? You never intended to stay."
He nodded solemny, gesturing to the room around him.
"Why would I want to spend my life asleep here? Even as an Immortal, I know what a waste of time that was. I set up the teleportation gate and activated the device in a safe place, but before I could move onto the next planet, they shot me down. Stranded me on this desolate planet millions of years ago.
There wasn't enough mana yet to sustain myself until the Soul Weaver could appear, so I had to sleep."
"How did you know... about me?"
Seth muttered softly, his manic and maddening laughing coming to an end as his mind focused on new information in a desperate attempt to keep itself together. His voice was hollow and emotionless, as if he was completely broken.
"A clairvoyant, someone who can see the future. They told me my salvation would appear on this planet one day. It's why I left the gate, to visit. But it seems I found you in a different way."
"So my fate... The fate of Sephtis, was to kill..."
Seth chuckled again, shaking his head softly. His laughter was restrained this time, only a soft chuckle before he let out a deep, heavy hearted sigh and stood up straight. Brushing his hair out of his face, he turned towards the immortal dragon with a forced smile on his face.
"Alright, You want to die? Let's get it over with then."
"One thing first..."
Prometheus returned the smile. But while Seth's was forced and completely ungeniune, Prometheus' was warm and paternal.
Angel's screen appeared before Seth's eyes, causing him to frown as it shifted through his stats by itself before shifting to his evolutionary requirements. The list of requirements began to spasm and glitch, as if the system was somehow being hacked into.
When they finally settled, the words of his requirement had changed before his very eyes.
[Evolution Catalyst Requirements:-
- Lightning in a Bottle (Obtained)
- Untainted Tear (Obtained)
- Fruit from the Heavenly Tree (Obtained)
- Heart of Prometheus
- Soul of a God]
[There we go, that's better.]
Prometheus smiled, his mouth not moving as he spoke through the system. He wasn't even using Angel's voice anymore, instead it was his own voice whispering directly into Seth's mind.
'It doesn't matter... I can't meet the last requirement. My only source for it died before I could take it.'
[Take it? Dear boy, What makes you think you had to take it? The Soul of a God is not something taken, but earned. It is something you have the capacity for already.
You have my blood. That means you have the power over Divine Energy, it is your catalyst. You simply need to hone it like a blade. Cleanse my influence from your blood, from your soul. Claim it for yourself and make it your own. Bind the two, then you will have the Soul of a God.]
Seth's eyes sparkled slightly as he read the words in front of him, his heart fluttering as those words alone reignited the flame of hope in his chest. The hope that he had thought was long gone, tossed to the wind along with the ashes of the Lightbringer.
But now, he really could continue to evolve! To grow stronger to protect all those that he loved, and not become a burden to Astra.
A geniune smile spread across Seth's face, replacing the one he had been forcing moments ago. His eyes lifted to the human shaped dragon infront of him, and he couldn't help but let out a hearty laugh.
"Alright then... Are you ready to die now?"
"I have been ready for longer than you can ever imagine."
Seth nodded softly before summoning his spear. He sunk into a strong stance, pulling his spear close to his chest and priming himself to strike, already aiming for the throat. However just before he could strike, Prometheus let out a hearty laugh of his own.
"Boy, If it was that easy, don't you think I would have done it by now? I don't need your weapon. I need you, or more specifically your hands. You are the Soul Weaver."
"I... don't know how to do any of that. The last time I looked at a soul deep enough to see its weave, I nearly passed out."
"Then it's lucky for you that I didn't waste my time, not including the last few million years. Other than those, I have spent a lot time learning everything I needed for this moment, ever since that seer told me my fate.
There's a reason He has been keeping an eye on you after all. Just do me a favour, look after them for me, will you?"
"Huh? Look after who?"
Prometheus ignored Seth's question as he lunged forwards faster than Seth could see. His giant hands clamped either side of Seth's head, his thumbs pressing against Seth's temples as he closed his eyes.
Seth's eyes snapped open, the silver being replaced by crimson before his eyes erupted into flames. At the same moment, his journal manifested into the air beside him, the pages rapidly flicking past until they stopped at a blank page before runic letters started to write themselves onto the pages.
