Koyuki, the Necromancing Foxkin

CHAPTER 262: Skeleton

"Did it taste good?" I asked Kaito.

"I did not really taste anything, to be honest. However, the experience was not unpleasant." He replied.

"How can I feed this skeleton to my own undead?" Leo asked the teacher.

"Your undead wolf? It is only a regular tier two skeleton, right?" Gronir asked.

Leo grimaced, clearly he was not happy about the description of his undead. "I do have several. I also have human skeletons. My father has provided me with some corpses."

"I do not think feeding them other undead will lead to much. Most tier two skeletons won't have an ability developed to devour undead, unless you have enhanced them considerably. Normally those would feed on the living, if they were wild. With a necrotic enhancement it could work but it would likely be a waste." Gronir replied.

"I do have one skeleton, which has been properly enhanced. The bones were strengthened by alchemy. Let me order it here." Leo replied, with a smile.

Soon there was some scratching at the door. Why did his skeleton scratch? Leo frowned as he opened it. He seemed confused.

"Meow."

All of us looked down. Three cats were sitting outside the door. Ivy, Yoru and Kasai. They just walked past a staring Leo, straight towards Nyx. Everyone watched as they approached the glutton, who had not stopped chewing her skeleton.

"Meow!" Ivy said, pointing with a paw at the skeleton. Yoru simply started chewing a bone. There was a lot of paw pointing and more meowing.

"How about I release my skeleton, then you can control it one after the other and in the end you can eat it?" Hatsumi offered the cats.

"Ridiculous. Control your undead!" Leo demanded.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

I shrugged. "They seem to be doing fine. I support Hatsumi's suggestion."

"I want a cat…" Tom mumbled.

Tim tried to bribe Ivy with a bone but he could not lure her away from her feast. Gronir seemed amused by the antics and approved of the other cats joining the exercise.

Recently, Ivy, Yoru and Kasai had largely focused on their elemental magic. I had taught them some basics of necromancy but their excitement had been limited. Maybe the potential for snacks would increase their interest in it. In the end, as long as they trained some magic, I was happy.

"This is my warrior." Leo said, trying to get attention.

I stopped watching the cats and looked at his minion. The skeleton was large, maybe even two metres tall. It looked human but I wondered if there was some orcish influence. The bones had clearly been enhanced. They were black with red lines on them. Although I did wonder if some of them were simply painted on for show.

"Wow." Tom said, looking at the arrival.

Gronir's eyes glowed green as he studied the new arrival. He approached the skeleton and inspected parts of it.

"Not bad." He poked the ribcage. "Good use of alchemy. The bones have been strengthened. I can also detect a necrotic enhancement. However, it won't help much in the hands unless you have it fight without a weapon. This would make more sense on one of your wolves. Especially if you enhanced their bite. Actually, you could have enhanced his bite as well. While not the best weapon it would supplement a sword, or any other weapon he uses in his hands."

"He can grab things with one hand, while still wielding a weapon. I find that the ability to wither things with a touch is quite intimidating." Leo replied, with a sinister smile.

It made me wonder if he used that skeleton mainly for intimidation.

"This is my bodyguard, when I need one. How do I make it feed on a skeleton?" Leo asked.

None of my undead had that problem. They were very enthusiastic devourers. Although only my tier three, come to think about it. What about Frank? Could I feed Frank something? Then again, what would it accomplish? In theory he could evolve at some point but it was not really a goal of mine. Evolution was not something that happened quickly. The cats had been special, because of Nyx.

I looked at Nyx, happily chewing bones. The other cats seemed to have forgiven her and were all happily devouring. If anything I should focus my resources on enhancing them.

While I had been lost in thought I noticed that Leo looked more and more unhappy. Apparently his shiny undead was not devouring. His undead warrior stuck his hand through the cage, touching a tier one skeleton.

"Why does it not work? I can only see a slight discoloration where he touches his prey." Leo asked.

"Why indeed?" Gronir asked with a smile. "Does anyone have a guess?"

"He is trying to kill an undead with death mana?" I guessed.

Gronir nodded. "Yes. Devouring other undead is really something that higher tier undead do. While you have enhanced your skeleton it is not powerful enough to overwhelm and consume the tier one. You would need to enhance this one a lot more. Once again, the teeth might have helped. Then it could chew through the bones, however that would not guarantee a devouring. I am afraid you might have gotten the wrong impression here. Koyuki's undead are not the norm."

"I guess I shall have to feed it living creatures." Leo muttered.

Gronir shook his head. "Trying to forcefully evolve this one will only lead to disappointment. Focus on your fundamentals. Evolution is a long process and not always worth it."

Leo did not look like he was really listening. Well, if he blew all of his resources on a fancy skeleton it was not my problem.
