North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 575: Acquittal (Part 2)

The day before the indictment hearing, Jimmy still had no result. He bought a new anonymous phone outside and went to a secluded corner of Central Park where there were no cameras, thinking it would be safe to make a call.

Using the new phone, he dialed Neil's number. Once connected, Jimmy directly asked, "Is everything settled?"

Neil hesitated a little when he saw an unfamiliar number, but after hearing Jimmy's voice, he realized what it was about. Still, he cautiously avoided mentioning Jimmy's name, "It's done."

Jimmy: "Alright, thank you. Goodbye."

After speaking, Jimmy hung up the phone, turned it off, removed the battery, and left Central Park to return to his apartment.

The next day, the indictment hearing was held in a federal court in New York City. Jimmy had previously communicated with Mrs. Mason. Both he and Isabel would attend this indictment hearing as observers to determine the content needed for the subsequent press conference on the case.

Soon, there were more than a dozen people in the gallery, including people from the FBI, the prosecutor's office, and court staff.

There were four seats at the front podium: a federal prosecutor, two senior deputy federal prosecutors, and a federal district court judge.

Jimmy sat in the gallery. When Adam and the others approached the podium, he turned his head to glance at Jimmy, his expression shifting from serious to a smile, then back to seriousness, showcasing his remarkable ability to change expressions.

Seeing his expression, Jimmy also knew that the issue must have been resolved.

As Adam and the group took their seats, he looked around and then said, "Okay, everyone, it's time. Bring Peter Bullock in."

Following Adam's words, the courtroom doors opened, and Peter Bullock, wearing a suit, walked in, followed by two federal court policemen in white uniform shirts.

Peter had been in prison for over a month, looking thinner, but today he was obviously well-groomed. His beard was neatly shaved, he was wearing a suit, and his hands were unshackled, looking just like he was going to work.

Adam: "Peter Bullock, in the case of the murder of Senator Terrance Pratt, you are charged with first-degree murder. Today, we will decide whether to officially press these charges."

Peter stood up directly: "I want to testify for myself. I want to plead for my work performance and conduct as an agent..."

Adam interrupted Peter's words directly, "Mr. Bullock, no matter what you say, I won't change the ruling. Sit down."

Peter, helpless, could only sit down. Adam continued, "Everyone, we now have a new piece of evidence."

Adam took out a player and pressed the switch to play the recording inside: "I am James Bennett. I almost let an innocent person take the blame for me, but I can't let others take the fall for my sins.

I was the one who shot and killed Senator Terrance Pratt; he ruined my life. I used Peter Bullock's gun.

Peter tried to persuade me to stay and face the legal consequences, but I ran away. His only mistake was believing I would step back from the brink. Unfortunately, this is all I can do to make amends.

I hope this is enough to clarify the truth for him."

After the recording ended, Adam placed the player on the table, looked at Peter, and said, "This recording was sent directly to the prosecutor's office via courier. However, he was smart, as we couldn't trace the source from the delivery.

We analyzed this recording and verified that it is indeed James Bennett's voice, and the file shows no signs of editing.

With this evidence, we can only drop all charges."

Adam looked at the other prosecutors and judges beside him. After everyone nodded to each other, he looked at Peter, "Peter Bullock, you are acquitted."

Peter looked at the podium and the gallery with a complex expression, as a month-long ordeal finally ended.

Jimmy extended his hands and applauded, stood up, and left the gallery to come to Peter's side, hugging him and saying, "Congratulations, Peter, you're free."

Peter, also emotional, patted Jimmy's back: "Thank you, thank you, Jimmy."

Jimmy released Peter: "Go, Elizabeth is waiting for you outside the courtroom."

Peter nodded and left the courtroom. Jimmy turned and met with Isabel, discussing how to conduct the press conference as they left.

Outside the courtroom door, Elizabeth and Jones were anxiously waiting because this hearing was classified as confidential, leaving Elizabeth unable to attend the observation. Jones accompanied her outside to wait.

In the afternoon, at the Public Affairs Office, with the help of staff, Jimmy was getting ready with makeup. This was the first time he would be the spokesperson at a press conference since coming to the Public Affairs Office.

Soon, the reporter seats were almost full. Everyone received advanced information that details of Senator Terrance Pratt's murder case would be announced today.

Jimmy took a deep breath outside the conference room to adjust his state. He looked at Isabel beside him, "How do I look?"

Isabel smiled and said, "Great, relax. Go on."

Jimmy nodded, opened the conference room door, went straight to the podium, and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, I am Jimmy Yang, the spokesperson for today's press conference. Today, we will reveal some details of the case involving the murder of Senator Terrance Pratt. Please look at the screen."
