North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 572: The Price

Hughes had already made it clear, and Jimmy managed to salvage the situation a bit. At least he didn't miss this opportunity, but it's unclear what position Hughes has prepared for him.

Jimmy specially returned to Nia's house to talk to Kevin again about recent events.

Kevin wasn't familiar with the situation in the Manhattan office, but he still gave Jimmy some advice: keep a close eye on whether Hughes can actually save Peter and get rid of Director Karaway.

If Hughes can do those things, even though he's retired, he's still trustworthy, because this means there are comrades in the agency who share his stance, and the people above will provide him some protection.

Moreover, there's Deputy Director Dave, who is known to be quite interested in Jimmy. Although he's not at the top, he still has enough status to take care of Jimmy, a veteran detective.

Director Karaway was appointed directly by headquarters. Removing her isn't easy, as it's not just about dealing with relationships in the Manhattan office; headquarters can't be completely disregarded either. Hughes and his team have quite a bit to do.

Time passed quickly, and two days went by in the blink of an eye. Jimmy was summoned again.

This time, he didn't go to Hughes' home but went to Thames Park, a small community park with an artificial lake and surrounded by large patches of trees, offering plenty of shade and a comfortable environment.

Jimmy found Hughes beside the artificial lake, dressed casually as he stared at the water. Jimmy walked up to him, "Hughes, what's up?"

Hughes: "Are you still proficient in the skills you trained in other agencies before?"

Jimmy was speechless; Hughes's words were a bit off. What's he up to? "What?"

Hughes: "You should know Director Karaway by now. I need you to talk to her and encourage her to voluntarily suggest returning to Atlanta or going to headquarters in DC. Also, the federal prosecutor named Adam Maxwell—you need to talk to him as well."

Jimmy frowned, looking at the lake as he thought for a moment, then said, "How should I approach this? Karaway knows me, but I don't have any leverage; it's difficult to handle."

Hughes: "The people from headquarters have already been in touch. As long as she voluntarily suggests it, they'll agree for her to change positions without demoting her."

Jimmy's mind was racing, "What about the agency?"

Hughes: "They've been in touch too."

Jimmy took two deep breaths; there's no free lunch. Clearly, this is the test he has to face this time. Originally, Kevin said to see if Hughes and his team could handle the mess here, but it seems this mess has become his own now.

He turned to Hughes, "I need some tangible evidence. Give me everything you've investigated related to Karaway."

Hughes nodded, "I'll give it to you. Go ahead and communicate freely."

Jimmy: "What about the other guy?"

Hughes: "Adam Maxwell, the new federal prosecutor, has been in New York for about two years. He collaborated quite a bit with the agency before and seemed normal. But his persistence this time is indeed odd. I can provide you with his communication records during this period; the rest you'll have to investigate on your own."

Hughes took out a business card from his pocket, "Here, make good use of it."

Jimmy accepted the business card, Senator Bill Hagerty's personal card. It looked very elegant, printed with the Capitol and Senator Hagerty's title, along with a phone number. Whether it's private or public remains unknown.

Jimmy: "Just give it to me first; I'll investigate and see."

Hughes took out two USB drives from his pocket and handed them to Jimmy, "Check the information quickly, and if you can't handle it, inform me promptly."

After speaking, Hughes turned and left the lakeside, while Jimmy put the USB drives and business card in his suit pocket, turned, and drove straight back to his apartment.

Jimmy first took one USB drive, plugged it into his laptop, and opened it. Inside were several audio files.

Jimmy opened and listened to them; they were telephone recordings from Director Karaway's office. Jimmy had already heard one segment before, and the other two were also her communication records with Senator Pratt. It seems that, for Senator Pratt, she was quite competent, and she would notify him about new intelligence.

Just relying on these recordings isn't enough to make Karaway directly give up her current position, but Hughes only provided this much, which is quite troublesome.

Jimmy thought for a while, first setting Karaway's matter aside. He took out the second USB drive and opened it. There were plenty of telephone recordings with timestamps starting from the day of the senator's murder case.

There were a lot of recordings. Jimmy listened to them bit by bit with headphones on, skipping dinner until Nia came back and called him before he snapped out of it.

He turned off the computer and pulled Nia out for dinner. He really wasn't in the mood to cook himself, and ordering takeout was slow; it was more convenient to go directly to a nearby restaurant to resolve it.

Nia asked Jimmy about the case while eating. Knowing he was handling a case, she didn't say much. Although Jimmy wasn't a field detective, he had handled cases more than once, so he was used to it.

After returning home, Nia went straight to wash up, while Jimmy returned to his study to continue listening to Prosecutor Adam's phone recordings, listening until the early hours, when he finally finished all the recordings and noted several potentially abnormal ones.

After listening to the recordings again, Jimmy finally identified an anomaly. In one call, Adam asked the person on the other end, Curtis, how it felt, and the other replied, besides lacking freedom, everything was fine. The person on the other end then suggested a meet-up, and the call was cut off.
