Chapter 523: Inheritance (Part 2)

Jimmy left Mrs. Mason's office and went straight home after work.

This time, Tom asked him to go to DC, probably to resolve the issue of the CIA identity. He might need to go to Langley, so before work on Friday morning, he opened the safe and took out the CIA identity card. If going to Langley, this thing is essential; otherwise, he would need to go through identification, involving too many people.

After leaving Washington Airport, Jimmy headed to the nearby parking lot, where the car he had left before was conveniently available. Once he got into the car, he called Tom to arrange a meeting at a hotel.

Since Tom had completely resolved his revenge issue and conveniently gained a usable public identity, he could stay at the hotel so openly. In the past, he would likely have chosen a place like a motel, as those places were relatively safer for him.

Jimmy parked the car and went directly to Tom's room door, knocking. Tom walked over and opened the door, "Come in."

They went into the room, and Tom pointed to a small brown leather case by the bed, "Open it."

Jimmy walked over and picked up the case while asking, "What's in it?" He placed the case directly on the bed. This old-style leather case didn't have a lock, just two straps to secure the lid. He unclasped the straps and opened the case, finding things that seemed quite old.

Tom: "Your mother's belongings and things that were supposed to be given to you but were intercepted by me. Since you've decided to fully take on this identity, you can keep these items."

Jimmy looked at the items in the case, one by one, and began placing them on the bed. Tom picked up the album from the side and took out the photos from it, "These are some photos from your mother back in the day. You need to remember their details to avoid surprises later. Oh, here's a group photo from Europe back then."

Tom explained the historical context and locations of several photos to Jimmy. These were old photos from 20 or 30 years ago, mostly 6 by 6 inches, with only two being 1 inch and 2-inch passport photo sizes. Some were black and white, while only two were in color.

These are photos of his current identity's mother, Veronique Durand. A few are group photos with people, and you can tell she was genuinely beautiful back in the day. However, it's quite surprising that she rarely smiled in the photos, which seemed out of place compared to others' expressions.

From the passport photos, it's clear she had blue pupils, slightly dull skin, not particularly fair, with a thin face, a slightly arched high nose bridge, and fluffy mid-length brown or black hair. It's uncertain if the old photos caused it, but the colors don't appear stable. Nonetheless, she is evidently a classic beauty.

Jimmy picked up the group photo of Veronique and Tom. Hmm, now bald Tom was once a middle-aged handsome guy with a remarkable amount of hair. As he looked at Tom, then at the photo, he thought, my gosh, old man, you seem off; your gaze in the photo is focused elsewhere, not on the camera, but on the beauty.

Tom saw Jimmy's actions and knew what he was thinking. He reached for the photo, glanced at it, and directly put it in his pocket, "I'll keep this one for memory."

Jimmy held back his laughter, continuing to look at the other photos, "Are these people your colleagues from back then?"

Tom: "Most of them, a few were locals we met in Europe. However, there are no photos left from Veronica in Hong Kong. These were found when I sorted her belongings, and it's all there was."

Jimmy: "Are these people still alive?"

Tom: "Some were already gone back then, but it's been too long since any contact, so I'm not sure about the others' current situations."

Jimmy: "By the way, why is there no photo of Jimmy here?"

Tom: "I destroyed them all."

Jimmy nodded, putting the photos away at the side. His memory was sharp enough now; from Tom's earlier introduction, he'd remembered most, and after looking at the photos himself, it seemed to reinforce it.

Tom: "I only have some definitive personal items here, and none of the clothes or toys were taken. This is her jewelry box. However, it only contains a pair of earrings, a necklace, and a ring. I recognize the earrings; she wore them in Europe, but the necklace and ring I have no impression of."

Jimmy took a look. The earrings were a teardrop pendant style, with a small diamond in the center. The body of the earrings seemed gold, maintained in the box for decades. It appeared less vibrant now, but the gold was still distinctly bright, indicating high purity.

The necklace was just a simple pearl necklace. It had been so long, the thread had already discolored, so he didn't pick it up in case the thread broke.

Lastly, there was the ring, a simple silver ring. The deep color was understandable, having been in the box for so many years, with no special text or patterns on it.

Tom picked up a pocket watch, "I've never seen her take this out. I suspected she might have obtained it in Hong Kong, but no one can say for sure."

Jimmy picked it up; it was a silver-white pocket watch without a strap, with numerous scratches and rust marks, suggesting it wasn't silver but a steel case. He opened it, and the watch hands were no longer moving. The watch cover featured a close-up of Veronica, but it appeared older than the photos in the album, likely due to differing storage conditions.

Jimmy: "Could it be his?"

Tom nodded slightly: "There's a slight possibility, but no one can confirm. Besides this, there's no need to look at the rest. You can take them back and review them yourself."

Jimmy received an envelope, opened it, and inside was a key and a note listing a bank's name and a series of account passwords. He looked up at Tom, who said, "She gave it to me before she died. I gave it to Jimmy previously, but after his death, I took it back. Now it's yours."

Jimmy nodded. Tom leaving it in the case for him indicated he hadn't retrieved it yet. The items in the bank safe should still be there, but after so many years, could it be cleared out by the bank due to expiration?

Tom: "Her belongings are all here; in this folder is yours."

Jimmy poured the contents from the envelope onto the bed, "This is what Jimmy left behind years ago, and here is the original birth certificate with only your mother's name, Veronique. You can keep it.

This is the land deed of a small farm in Montana that Jimmy inherited from Veronique. It's currently managed by a farm management company, which I handled several years ago. Now it's yours.

Here are two bank cards Jimmy applied for earlier. I don't know the passwords; you'll have to handle it yourself. The social security number you're using now is Jimmy's, so it should be quite straightforward.

This is your CIA salary card. Previous years' wages were deposited in this card until now. It's a bank controlled by the CIA, so don't worry about security. You can use it directly or transfer the funds to your other card."

Jimmy's jaw dropped, "Ah, I have a salary?"

Tom: "Yes, it was always issued, but there was no need to give it to you before."

Jimmy shrugged, "Luckily, I haven't been short on money these years, and I didn't dare inquire about salary matters with the CIA, so I just pretended it didn't exist."

Tom: "If it weren't for any unforeseen circumstances, you wouldn't have been activated, making this unnecessary. Using this card would leave a record, easier to expose, which is why I didn't give it to you before."

Jimmy: "Alright, I'll keep it then. When I have time, I'll check it out. I've heard the CIA is quite wealthy; I just don't know how generous they are."

Tom: "Alright, pack up all these things. I'll tell you some things you must remember, your mother's birthplace, and the location of her grave, along with some other matters of hers.

Tonight we'll meet a person, my mentor. She knows things about Veronica's father and is acquainted with Veronica. You'll need her help to exit the CIA as well. If you say something wrong, the consequences will be severe, so listen carefully and note it down thoroughly. Tonight, absolutely avoid making any mistakes."
