Peter drank the liquor in his glass, "Thanks, Jimmy. Neil, is everything okay here?"
Neil nodded: "No major issues, but we'll need to adjust the setup when the time comes. Leave the rest to me."
Jimmy: "No problem, arrange it any way you like, as long as it doesn't interfere with ongoing operations. Woody will cooperate with you."
Peter: "Are you going to participate?"
Jimmy: "Me? I'd rather not. My presence might hinder your investigation."
Peter: "Alright, by the way, the bureau will handle the expenses afterwards."
Jimmy waved his hand: "Whatever, it doesn't matter. By the way, Neil, how much longer do you have?"
Neil blinked, apparently not understanding. Jimmy pointed at his foot, and Neil realized, "Oh, a little over a year, already halfway through."
Jimmy: "Congratulations, you're close to freedom."
Peter chimed in: "Yeah, Neil's helped us solve many cases. When he leaves, I might really find it hard to adjust."
Jimmy: "Haha, Jones would cry if he heard you say that. Where's Jones, by the way?"
Peter: "Still working overtime, we also need to get back to prepare soon."
Jimmy: "Thanks for the hard work, taking a break is nice. How's Elizabeth?"
Peter: "She's good, thanks."
They sat for a while and then got up to leave. Jimmy didn't have much else to do, so he also left to go home and rest.
Actually, Jimmy and the others all knew what Hughes was thinking. Peter was his chosen successor. It was a consensus among those familiar with Hughes, but it was unclear why he hadn't taken over yet.
They had privately discussed it a bit before. In terms of connections and personal ability, Peter was top-notch among the group leaders, especially in terms of networking. Most others had connections mainly in the Manhattan office, but Peter had quite a few acquaintances at the DC headquarters too.
So, whether they had cooperated in the past or hoped for better relations in the future, Jimmy wouldn't refuse Peter's requests. Besides, he wasn't really that invested in the bar. He originally wanted to buy it because of Woody, not because he planned to run a bar to make money. Having a special use for it wasn't bad either.
When he said he didn't want to join Peter's case, he truly meant it. Jimmy had been in the FBI for a long time. He had moved past the time when he first started under Peter and didn't know much.
The cases Peter's team generally handled, the suspects were not particularly high-risk criminals. The cases Jimmy dealt with in recent years mostly involved high-risk crime. If he got a bit tipsy and acted rashly, it could cause trouble.
Afterwards, Jimmy went to the bar every day but didn't drink too much. Since Isaac wasn't around, Jimmy also had to help Woody manage the bar. However, after just two days, Jimmy couldn't take it anymore. The bar had too many petty issues, like inventory checks, inevitable disputes in the bar, and illegal activities in corners and restrooms. After handling a few issues, Jimmy completely gave up and left it to Woody.
Finally, just as Jimmy was about to break down, a call came from Winston. Excited, Jimmy answered it. Winston didn't say much on the phone, just wanted to meet up with Jimmy for a chat.
Jimmy invited Winston to visit his bar. After some consideration, Winston accepted Jimmy's invitation.
The bar wasn't open yet, so Jimmy called Woody to come early. He then went downstairs to the bar to wait.
Soon, Winston's Rolls-Royce stopped at the door. Winston and Charon entered one after another.
Jimmy went to the door to greet them, "Hi, Winston, welcome to my bar. This way, please."
Jimmy led Winston to his usual spot in the corner, "Woody, two martinis."
Woody nodded and started mixing drinks. Charon placed his briefcase next to Winston and didn't stay, but instead sat at the bar, "Ice water, please." It seemed Charon was the driver and could only drink water for safety.
Jimmy: "So, how did it go, Winston?"
Winston: "All settled." He lifted the briefcase, opened it, and handed Jimmy two photos.
Jimmy took them and glanced at them. In a car, two people lay in the back seat. From the photos, they appeared to have been shot from the side, quite suddenly, with no apparent resistance.
Carefully examining their faces, Jimmy confirmed it was Greg and Sullivan. He placed the photos on the table, just as Woody brought over two martinis.
Jimmy: "Try my bartender's skills, hope you like it."
Winston picked up his drink, smelled it, swirled it, and took a sip, "Not bad at all, you've got a great bartender."
Jimmy smiled and raised his glass in gesture before taking a sip, "Haha, not bad at all. I bought this place because of the bartender. Thank you, Winston. Was there any trouble?"
Winston: "No, everything went smoothly. If you're sure, I'll settle with the other party."
Jimmy: "Of course, I've confirmed it. Hopefully, Justin will send the funds over soon."
Winston nodded slightly: "You don't have to worry about Justin. He'll handle it, probably in the next few days."
Jimmy: "Might be a bit presumptuous, but can I ask who did it?"
Winston shook his head: "This needs to remain secret. Once this time has passed, I might introduce you if there's a chance."
Jimmy: "Oh, no rush, as long as the matter's resolved."
Winston: "OK, with this sorted out, I should head back. Goodbye, Jimmy."
Winston raised his glass in gesture and drank, then got up. Jimmy clinked glasses and took a sip as well, then got up to see Winston off, watching as they got into the Rolls-Royce and left. Only then did he return to the bar, took the photos from the table, went to the bathroom, and lit them up, watching until they burned completely before turning on the tap and washing the ashes down the drain.
Their conversation hadn't revealed anything special, so there was no concern about Woody hearing and causing trouble. There were only four people in the bar, so unless they whispered, most of their conversation could be heard. Thus, Winston and Jimmy had largely avoided specific names and events in their dialogue.
Jimmy said to Woody: "Woody, it'll be tough for a few days. When Isaac is back, make sure he gives you a break."
Woody: "No problem, Jimmy. Are you staying, or heading back? There's still 3 hours before opening."
Jimmy: "I'm heading back, had enough rest already. I'll go organize things and prepare to return to work."
Woody: "Okay, I'll take care of it here. Goodbye, Jimmy."
Jimmy: "Goodbye, Woody."
Jimmy didn't intend to return to work immediately. With the incident involving Greg, he needed to stay home for a day or two to ensure there were no further developments.
Soon, Jimmy received a call from Caitlin, asking to meet outside. Just right, he could confirm any movements on that side through Caitlin.
In Central Park, Jimmy saw Caitlin sitting on a bench, holding a newspaper and appearing engrossed, seemingly unaware of his approach.
Jimmy sat beside her, "Caitlin, what's up?"
Caitlin did not lower the paper or even turn to look at Jimmy: "Was the DC affair your doing?"
Jimmy: "What are you talking about?"
Caitlin: "Sullivan is dead, shot in someone else's car three days ago."
Jimmy: "Wasn't me, I've been in New York this whole time."
Caitlin: "Do you know who did it?"
Jimmy: "No idea. I was only looking through the info, didn't even get a chance to head to DC."
Caitlin: "OK, just make sure to say that to anyone. Nothing else, I'll head to work, goodbye, Jimmy."
Jimmy: "Goodbye."
