Jimmy: "Tom, where's your hair? Wasn't there a little bit left?"
Tom was speechless, "What's the situation with James?"
Jimmy pointed towards the bench nearby, and both of them sat down, "Two groups of FBI went to James, and afterward, he noticed someone was tracking him. He called to give me a subtle hint. I went to find the tracker, who had come from DC, looking for my friends and family in Little Rock.
The man who contacted him was Nick Sullivan, but he found out the man behind it was Christian Greg. Oh yes, this person is an FBI agent from headquarters, but he used to be in the CIA, his name is Roy Nelson."
"I let him go, told him to disappear for two weeks, and he left Little Rock that same evening. I'm not clear on his whereabouts after that."
Tom said with emphasis, "Idiot, why did you let him go? Don't you know that's more dangerous?"
Jimmy shrugged, "He didn't harm James, and it was confirmed he's an FBI agent. I didn't want to kill someone unrelated before actual harm was done."
Tom: "Disappearing for two weeks isn't the right way to handle it. If it's really Christian Greg behind this, he must know something is wrong by now."
Jimmy: "That's why I plan to wrap this up as soon as possible. He's already come for me. These past two days, I've been pondering one thing incessantly, why now? He had plenty of time to deal with it beforehand."
Tom: "I have a theory, but I'm not certain it's true yet. I got the family information of your current identity from someone else, I told you about it before, and there was also a theory that Veronica's death might not have just been cancer, but rather Greg's doing.
As Veronica's son, Greg would have known about it. The former Jimmy's identity wasn't top secret in the CIA, and Greg, as the deputy director, could have accessed it for sure.
The first mission after training was supposed to be an easy assassination, but it failed and resulted in the former Jimmy's death on the mission. I always thought it was due to lack of skill, and a problem occurred at the scene. Ever since I found out about Greg, I've been suspecting that someone had sabotaged that mission, and directly killed him."
Jimmy: "That doesn't make sense, though. If it was really Greg's doing, then he should be clear about the former Jimmy's death, and there shouldn't be any follow-up."
Tom shook his head, "That should be explainable. Greg certainly wouldn't do it himself. He was quite old by then, and it would've been impossible for him to be at the scene. He must've arranged for someone else.
"Investigating the former Jimmy's files was probably Greg's doing. After the former Jimmy died, I didn't report it but spent some time finding you to take over his identity. During this time, Greg probably didn't investigate the files further.
"Someone dug up your files a while ago and naturally someone reported it to Greg since there was no death reported in those files. Then you were activated in New York, which must have confirmed you're still alive for him.
"No, the attacks you faced in New York might not have only been arranged by Rick; it's very possible that there were people arranged by Greg too."
Jimmy frowned as he looked towards the children's slide in front of him, recalling the several attacks he faced previously. If he considered the factor of Greg, his previous judgments seemed questionable: "I was attacked and assassinated five times in a row in New York; the last three were by professionals, absolutely skilled.
"In-home assassination, ambush on the streets, and long-range sniping—could Greg have been involved in these three attacks?"
Tom nodded, "These three methods are common. Greg, after all, is a former deputy director and is now an advisor for DHS. He would have no problem finding someone for such tasks.
"But Rick, who is in charge of the clean-up operation, is also a suspect. He's well-connected to the agency, has military experience, and also has connections with the Ministry of Defense. These three methods would also be easy for him to implement. Just relying on the attacks and assassination methods, we can't confirm which of these three attacks were arranged by either side."
Jimmy: "It doesn't matter who it was, it clearly must be one of them. We just need to take them down."
Tom stopped talking and kept his gaze forward, probably pondering something. Jimmy took out a cigarette case, lit a cigarette, and slowly digested the details they had just discussed.
Tom, "Greg is not easy to deal with. As a former deputy director, he is protected by the agency's security detail, and he's also an advisor to the DHS. If anything goes wrong, no matter who it is, there will be a thorough investigation."
Jimmy, with furrowed brows, turned to look at Tom, "How do you know that?"
Tom, "My mentor was a deputy director as well, and it was Veronica who told me about this. She now lives in seclusion in a forest villa, protected by agency security within a two-kilometer radius. Greg likely has the same treatment."
Jimmy, "Wow, I really didn't expect that. I thought you had such high-level administrative access when you could replace those records. It looks like she was the one who helped you."
Tom nodded, "That's generally correct, but there's one mistake: she didn't actually help with the process. After she retired, I obtained her account and identity card. So, I used her authority to switch the records, but she didn't know about it."
Jimmy shrugged, "Well, that means only you know about my situation. It seems I can breathe a little easier now, at least there's less risk of being exposed. But what about Greg? How do we deal with him?"
Tom, "It's difficult unless we can make it look like an accident. Any aggressive action or assassination attempt will draw attention."
Jimmy, "He shouldn't tell anyone else about Veronica and me, right? If he dies, there should be no one who can link it back to me."
Tom shook his head, "We can't be sure of that. He was after all orchestrating something against you, and it's possible he might have told someone else. The key point is that Greg is now alone; his wife and children are dead, and he never remarried. You could say he has no ties or concerns, so if we really need to take him out, our losses could be substantial."
Jimmy, "Then how do I find Greg? I'll evaluate whether action is possible, but the problem now is that I can't use official records for investigation, and I've never done an investigation on my own. I wouldn't even know how."
Tom, "I can't help you there. In fact, investigating Greg is very difficult. First, you can't use the FBI's system to check directly, as that would trigger sensitive personnel keywords. Second, the security detail around him means that asking around in his vicinity would likely reveal your location.
The best strategy would be to follow and investigate people associated with Greg to get specific information. Of course, if there was a way to directly check CIA data, you could access retired personnel information, or use the authority of high-level CIA personnel for investigation.
It's best not to consider using my mentor's authority, as it would attract unwanted attention, and the fact that her authority hasn't been revoked is already a violation of many policies."
Jimmy, "Do I have the authorization to check myself? After all, I am an agent in name, so I should have some access rights, right? As long as I don't investigate Greg himself, there shouldn't be a problem, right?"
Tom, "Hmm, but even if you have the access rights, every search will leave a record, and you have to consider that. I didn't apply for an account for you before; you know that. At the time, I was only considering the file issue, not intending for you to get into the CIA."
Jimmy, "So what do I do now?"
Tom, "Go to your current supervisor for help. You still have your identity card, right?"
Jimmy nodded, "I've kept it in the safe the whole time, never used it."
Tom, "Then go apply with your current supervisor; that should be Caitlin. She'll help you with it."
