Jimmy smoked while pondering the meaning behind James's words but couldn't figure it out. He took out his phone and dialed his former boss at the county police, Cage.
Jimmy, "Cage, are you working?"
Cage, "Yes, I'm patrolling right now. What's up? Calling me at this hour, what's happened?"
Jimmy, "Has there been anything going on recently around Little Rock? It's about James."
Cage, "Hold on a sec." Cage pulled his police car over to the side of the road, "Have you heard anything on your end? I haven't noticed anything strange."
Jimmy, "I'm clueless here, but I'll come over after you get off work late today."
Cage, "Understood, I'll wait for you."
Jimmy ended the call, threw away his cigarette butt and lit another, his mood irritable. After finishing his cigarette, Jimmy went back to Ray's office. Seeing Ray still investigating Jeff's clues, he didn't feel like intervening. The leads in this case had already become clear anyway.
Jimmy, "Ray, something has come up and I might need to leave for a day or two."
Ray stopped what he was doing, looked up at Jimmy, "What's wrong?"
Jimmy smiled and said, "There's something I need to handle, it might take a day or two. I'll try to get back as soon as I can."
Ray thought for a moment and nodded, "Okay, you keep an eye on Jeff's house, and remember to report any progress daily."
Jimmy nodded, turned, and left the office.
Ray was decent; his previous statement essentially vouched for Jimmy. Jimmy was assigned to a task and head out, and whatever he did after that, sorry, FBI agents each have their methods of conducting investigations. As long as it wasn't illegal or against the rules, no one would interfere.
Jimmy drove to a motel, parked the car in the lot, went back to his room to grab some cash from his luggage, and then took a taxi to buy a used car and drove towards Little Rock.
This time, he needed to minimize his tracks to avoid being spotted which meant taking a flight wasn't an option. From Dallas to Little Rock was only about 310 miles, and driving there was just a bit more tiring, but Jimmy was up to it given his current energy levels.
Jimmy got off the expressway to grab lunch and took the opportunity to buy two prepaid phones from a mobile store before hitting the road again. Since he had purchased this car under a false identity, to avoid any trouble, Jimmy drove right at the speed limit, doing everything possible to avoid detection by any state or county police ready to intercept him.
The reason for this was Jimmy's past experience. During his time with the county police, he had often lain in ambush on the roads. With his own experience, he needed to avoid becoming a lesson for others.
In the afternoon, Jimmy arrived at the West Suburb of Little Rock, used a prepaid phone to call Cage, and arranged a meeting spot.
On a small road, Jimmy saw the parked police car and pulled up behind it. Cage had already stepped out of his car.
Cage, "Jimmy, what exactly is going on? I called a few people, and there haven't been any major incidents in the city recently."
Jimmy, "And James?"
Cage, "I haven't contacted him, but I had someone check his house from the outside and he and Mary are both there, nothing strange has happened."
Jimmy frowned James was at home with nothing amiss, so was his call really just about visiting New York?
Jimmy, "Cage, do me a favor tonight." He headed back to his car, took out the second anonymous phone he had bought earlier, unwrapped it, and turned it on. He made a call to his other anonymous phone to record the number.
"Go to James's house, find some excuse, and give him this phone discreetly."
Cage took the phone, "What exactly is going on, Jimmy?"
Jimmy, "This morning, James suddenly called me, asking if I was in New York, and said he and Mary would be visiting New York in a few days. He has never called me about personal matters during my work hours before. I suspect there's something he couldn't mention over the phone."
Cage nodded. Jimmy was already a senior FBI agent. When James was shot, Cage and his team had struggled to find any leads, but not only had Jimmy found the gunman, he had even pressured the shooter into suicide. He wasn't on the same level anymore, and his analysis certainly had merit.
Cage, "Got it, I'll call James first, then head to his house this evening. I'll call you when I leave there."
Jimmy shook his head, "No need, just head home after you leave."
Cage, "OK, I'm going back on patrol then."
-----------------
Jimmy and Cage parted ways, and Jimmy drove to Justin's bar, which was already open for business, though customers usually came in the evening. Therefore, when Jimmy entered, the bar was still empty.
Jimmy greeted an unfamiliar bartender, "Hey buddy, is Justin around?"
Bartender, "May I ask who is asking?"
Jimmy, "Tell him Jimmy is here."
The bartender smiled and nodded, "I know you, one moment." Then he left the bar and headed towards the storage area. Soon, Justin emerged in his bartender outfit, holding a bottle of Whiskey.
Justin, "Hey, Jimmy, perfect timing, come try the drink I just got."
Jimmy stood up and embraced Justin, "New liquor?"
Justin, "Yes, I just purchased a small distillery over in Kentucky."
Jimmy tapped the bar, "Then we should definitely try it. Let's go."
Jimmy took a small sip from his glass, "Uh, why do I feel like this tastes just like the Bourbon I've had before?"
Justin laughed, "Haha, of course, this distillery is right in Bourbon County, and the owner used to be a distiller at Wild Turkey."
