North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 784: James called at 4:73.

A gaunt, brown-haired woman came over to open the door, exchanged a few words with the police, and sent them away as they lacked a search warrant and direct evidence to forcibly enter. Jimmy could do nothing but helplessly leave as well. It wasn't until the three of them had left the front of the house that the woman reached out to close the door. Jimmy looked back as he walked away, noticing that the person hidden in the wardrobe emerged after the woman gave a signal and returned to the living room.

Upon reaching the vehicle, Jimmy stopped Ray, "I suspect the person is inside the house, Ray, should we keep surveillance for a while?"

Ray waved his hand and pulled open the car door, "There's no need for us to stick around here, I'll call and arrange for someone else to come over, we have other leads to follow up on."

Jimmy looked back one more time before heading to his own car. Styles of working differed and there was no need to insist; since Ray had said so, they would do as he suggested, especially since they weren't in Manhattan.

Driving back to the office, Jimmy continued to review documents, and Ray dealt with his matters. No matter how he looked at it, Jimmy felt that Ray seemed to have lost interest in the current bank robbery case. Of course, it wasn't beyond the realm of possibility that Ray was too distracted by other cases he had on hand, but the way he tossed the lead to Jimmy to investigate on his own and went off to do other things always seemed to Jimmy like he was just giving Jimmy something to do to stay out of his way.

After reflecting on it, Jimmy decided to verify his suspicion. After having lunch out, Jimmy said to Ray, "Ray, we don't have any leads for now, I think it's better to keep an eye on that thief, don't you agree?"

Ray replied, "I've already arranged a surveillance team to go there, let's wait for their news."

Jimmy retorted, "I don't have much else to do at the moment, I might as well go myself."

Ray nodded his head, "Be careful."

And just like that, Jimmy was sent out on his own. Alright then, Jimmy thought, at least he now understood Ray's point of view and decided not to hang around him anymore.

After all, having been temporarily transferred, Jimmy had worked with Ray only a few times before, and knew Ray had his own subordinates to rely on. There was no need to trouble Jimmy, and so Jimmy had fully understood his role. As long as Lambert didn't say anything, he might as well treat his time in Dallas as a vacation and just casually enjoy himself.

As an FBI agent, Jimmy certainly couldn't justify skipping work to go shopping, so he did the job he had to do. He drove to the neighborhood of the thief, Jeff, they had previously located. As he passed by Jeff's house, Jimmy could tell that the people inside were still there. At the same time, Jimmy noticed the FBI surveillance van parked diagonally across from the house on the street. The two agents inside seemed to be slacking.

Jimmy didn't interfere with them and simply walked past along the street before returning to his car. He turned on the radio, daydreaming while keeping an eye on the people in the house.

In the afternoon, two cars arrived at Jeff's doorstep one after another, with a few shady-looking characters entering the house, seemingly to conduct a transaction before driving off.

It appeared that this thief, Jeff, was not just some minor player, and the woman who had answered the door earlier was not a simple character either. Despite not being able to see her face, Jimmy judged based on her figure that it was the same woman who had received both groups of visitors and gone to the bedroom to store something.

The situation was different here than in Manhattan. If this were Manhattan, Jimmy would have most certainly dropped everything to follow those cars, as their actions strongly suggested street-level transactions. Such matters were Jimmy's forte to intervene with, and without any concerns about consequences, he could just call Ruiz, and there would be people ready to assist him. Sadly, he was in Dallas now.

By evening, someone finally emerged from inside. A man walked out of the house, looked around, and drove off in an old pickup parked at the front. The surveillance van started tailing him, and Jimmy followed suit, getting on the road.

Driving by a gas station, Jeff's pickup turned in to refuel. He paid for the gas and left, but the surveillance van did not enter; instead, it waited on the side of the road before tailing again.

Jimmy didn't continue to follow them but stopped at the gas station, "FBI." He showed his credentials and said, "Can I see the money paid by that pickup just now?"

The gas station attendant frowned at Jimmy, "Why?"

Jimmy explained, "I'm investigating a bank robbery case, and I need to check whether the money he paid was part of the cash stolen from the bank. You don't need to give it to me, just copying down the serial number will suffice."

The employee shrugged, took out the money Jeff had paid, and Jimmy jotted down the serial number of a $20 bill, "Thank you." He returned to his car, texted the serial number to Ray, and then called him, "Ray, Jeff just refueled at the gas station. I sent you the serial number of the $20 bill he used. Please check if it's among the serial numbers of the bait money."

Ray answered, "Alright, I'll look into it."

Jimmy drove off as he had already lost sight of his target. He stopped for dinner on the road and then returned to Jeff's neighborhood, waiting like hunting by standing stakeout, while also waiting for a response from Ray. However, the call never came through until Jimmy was ready to leave.

Jimmy sighed, started the car, and went back to his hotel. It seemed that Ray wasn't at his office when he took the call earlier, and he might have already gone home, without bothering to check. Jimmy was left speechless, didn't even turn on the radio during the drive, and returned to his hotel room in silence to wash up and rest.

The next day, after getting up and heading out for breakfast, Jimmy drove straight to Jeff's house. There was no point in going to the office to be snubbed, so he decided to handle the case by himself. Whenever he needed backup, he could contact Ray, who wouldn't just ignore him.
