North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 716: Tom takes action

Mahong suffered the loss of a gunman, and he could only go back to continue his investigation on the previous mobile phone. The corresponding recording had been obtained from the National Security Bureau, but the content of the call was very simple. When the landline called, it only said to go to New York for a mission, and the unregistered mobile phone simply notified him to pick up something.

The only thing of value was a mini storage.

Mahong and his men went directly to the yacht marina at the southern end of Manhattan and obtained surveillance footage from the mini storage operating company. Although there was no video for each storage unit's door, at least the footage covered the entrance and the main corridors.

Based on the phone call time, Mahong and his team were able to determine the gunman's movements from the surveillance and ultimately found the storage unit where he picked up his equipment. The Department of Homeland Security stepped in without even applying for a search warrant, as the storage operating company had already arranged for contact with the person renting the unit and allowed them to investigate.

Before they had completed their investigation of the storage unit, an error occurred on the renter's end: the phone number left behind was unreachable, and the agents sent to check the address provided by the renter reported back that there was no such person.

It was like this again. The situation with fake identities is so common in the United States that no one is surprised when it happens. In such circumstances, there was actually good news: although the phone was unreachable, the phone number could still be investigated.

Through an investigation with the National Security Bureau, it had been confirmed that the phone number was registered to an unregistered mobile phone that was already turned off. What remained was waiting for the National Security Bureau to attempt to retrieve past records, while Mahong and his team also arranged for someone to copy the surveillance footage to investigate the person who had gone to this storage unit to see if they could determine who had supplied the gunman with equipment.

The investigation was progressing smoothly, and the person who delivered the equipment had been identified. Through entrance surveillance, they had determined where he had come from and continued to follow up with road surveillance, basically pinpointing the person.

So far, the investigation was going smoothly. Although there were not many leads, they had already surpassed previous progress.

Of course, there wasn't just one piece of good news; the Department of Homeland Security's investigation also had preliminary results.

DHS agents went directly to the lobbying company for investigation. It was a small lobbying firm with just over a dozen employees; with so few people, it was easier to conduct an investigation.

A person from the lobbying company had gone missing several days ago, the company could not make contact, and the employee who had vanished became their primary target. When they broke into his home, they found some special items in one of the rooms.

In a hidden room, they had set up a prayer room associated with the Green Sect. Also located there was a satellite phone and a small radio that had been tuned to the police frequency, ready to intercept DC police communications upon activation.

"Bernard Conwell, 35 years old, single, an employee of the lobbying company, vanished a few days ago and has been unreachable since. We found a prayer room in his home, and his colleagues never knew he was a follower of the Green Sect. We found some clues in his room,"

At the same time, we investigated the case related to Jimmy before. There is an unresolved case: the explosion case's mastermind, Nu'er Mohammod, fled to Paris, and he has yet to be captured.

From the current cases, there's a possibility that he has contacted domestic individuals for retaliatory actions."

DHS agents gathered Mahong and his team in the conference room to disclose the investigation results from Washington D.C. and also shared their speculations, which were consistent with Jimmy's initial conjecture when he was first attacked.

Mahong and his colleagues exchanged glances. This seemed a bit far-fetched too, right?

Mahong pointed at the items displayed on the conference room screen and asked, "Can we find the records for that satellite phone?"

A DHS agent shook his head: "That phone is not from our jurisdiction; it's from Europe, and there are certain difficulties with cross-country investigation." It's not just difficult; it's completely unnecessary to investigate.

The agent continued, "We didn't find any weapons in Conwell's home, his bank account information has been requested, but no unusual financial movements have been detected so far. We suspect he may have other accounts, and headquarters has arranged for someone to investigate him, in hopes of finding other clues."

Mahong and his team continued to question about the evidence found in Conwell's home, but in the end, they could only tentatively accept the DHS agents' speculations and also arranged for someone to start an investigation from this aspect. Whether Mahong believed it or not was something only he knew.

Jimmy finally bid farewell to the liquid diet from his nutritionist; the doctor had checked and agreed for him to resume his regular diet, and he could finally eat meat again.

Once the wound had healed, Jimmy restarted his fitness regimen. The period of rest had significantly weakened him, and if not for the nutritional meals, he would have definitely gained weight.

While at the gym, Jimmy received a call from Mahong. The preliminary investigation results from the DHS startled Jimmy. How had things circled back again?

What kind of hornet's nest had he poked? It was now almost clear that the first two attacks were organized by the congressman's fixer, but if the last one was arranged by the mastermind of the explosion case, what about the two in between?

His head about to explode, Jimmy gave up on fitness, took a rest, showered, and returned to his hotel. He needed to contact Tom to see if there was any news on his end.

-----------------

Tom had flown to Maryland. There was something troubling about the Conwell Company laboratory shooting incident. From what was reported in the news, there were no distinguishing details, and so, in the end, Tom decided to conduct his own on-site investigation.
