Jimmy raised his left hand with the FBI badge and his right hand with the revolver, barrel pointed skyward, "FBI, don't shoot. I'm apprehending an active shooter."
Just as the two officers were about to shout 'NYPD', Jimmy's yell came out first, effectively blocking their words.
Jimmy: "I'm Senior Agent Jimmy Yang with the FBI, you can contact dispatch to verify."
One patrol officer had been aiming his gun at Jimmy but lowered it upon hearing his words. "I know you, Agent Yang, how come you ran out dressed like that?"
Jimmy was surprised that someone had actually heard of him, "I was sleeping across the street when a gunman started sniping from this building, I didn't have time to dress properly. You arrived just in time, help me open the doors, then cover the building from both sides, and don't let anyone out. Also, call for backup, we need to lock this place down."
After giving quick orders, Jimmy turned his head back to look at the building, where he had used Heart Eye to determine the positions of the elevators and fire escape stairwells; so far, he hadn't spotted anyone.
He turned to the two patrol officers, "Hurry up, hurry up, I suspect the shooter hasn't escaped yet and is still in this building."
One patrol officer went to the door while the other started contacting dispatch and calling in more police units with his walkie-talkie.
The security guard saw the NYPD patrol officers signaling him from the door and finally left the front desk to approach. After communicating with the officers through the door, the guard returned to the front desk, pressed the switch to deactivate the magnetic lock on the main door, and it finally opened.
Jimmy rushed in the moment the door opened, worried that the shooter might have used the brief period when he lost sight of the elevators and stairs to escape. Unable to watch his back while negotiating with the police, whose patrol cars had flashing lights and sirens, and who could potentially shoot at him, he had to first ensure the officers in front wouldn't fire.
Jimmy: "Security, shut down these elevators, only keep this one active." Once he was certain the gunman wasn't found for now, Jimmy ordered the security guard to halt the elevators.
Jimmy didn't go upstairs immediately but returned to the door. The same two officers were still waiting at the entrance for reinforcements. Some people just don't listen.
Jimmy: "Hey, guys, lock down this building, from outside. Watch every entrance and exit. Time is critical, start now."
After shouting the instructions, he turned to look at the confused security guard, who eventually started heading back to the front desk to find the elevator keys.
Jimmy resumed observing the building. He'd been away from his hotel room for a while, enough time for the shooter to have evacuated from the upper floors. Because of various reasons, he had not seen inside the building for quite some time. There was no activity upstairs, and as he looked down at the underground parking, numerous cars were parked, but he didn't notice any movement.
Sirens sounded outside with flashing police lights crossing, and another police car pulled up at the entrance. Four officers had a brief conversation before splitting into two groups to cover both sides.
Jimmy pressed the elevator button, and several elevators started moving downward. The security had found the keys and was ready to lock them once they reached the first floor, leaving only one operational. Jimmy looked up once more and entered the elevator heading to the top floor.
However, after only ascending a few floors, Jimmy realized through Heart Eye that there was no human presence within range. Bad news, the shooter had escaped. Jimmy immediately pressed several floor buttons, exited the elevator, and bolted down the fire escape before reaching the first floor when a car in the underground parking started and drove away.
Not holding back his strength, Jimmy sprinted from the fire stairs to the underground parking. As he burst through the fire door into the parking area, the departing car was blocked by the police car stationed outside, precisely arranged by Jimmy earlier to seal off the building. The police had parked their car across the exit.
While running, Jimmy shouted, "Stop him!" But before he could take a few steps, gunfire erupted. Jimmy's hearing was already very keen; shortly after the first shots were fired, he heard different gunshots, signaling that the officers at the exit were returning fire. The shooter was firing while trying to ram his vehicle into the police car, the act of driving interfering with his aim, causing a decline in accuracy. One officer fell to the ground, while the other dodged out of the way of the makeshift barricade and continued shooting.
By the time Jimmy reached behind the exit, he didn't wait but immediately fired three shots at the shooter's car. Running and shooting affected Jimmy's balance, but he still managed to hit the driver's seat with one shot. The gunman slumped over the steering wheel, then braced himself up again, turning the wheel to escape through the damaged exit.
Jimmy fired two more shots, aiming for the seat to hit the body, hoping to take the shooter alive for interrogation. He didn't shoot his gun empty, saving one bullet just in case the gunman tried to flee and he wouldn't have a chance to intercept, ready to take him down on the spot.
Fortunately, Jimmy's last two shots, though slowed by the car seat, still landed on the shooter. He fell over the steering wheel, and the car skewed into the wall upfront, coming to a stop.
"Call an ambulance, right now," Jimmy yelled as he ran toward the shooter's car, calling out to the officer who hadn't been shot.
The officer pressed his radio to call for more officers and an ambulance, while Jimmy, with his gun ready, moved to the rear of the shooter's vehicle. With his last bullet, he had to be cautious. He aimed at the shooter's head and inched towards the driver's side. The shooter wasn't moving, slumped over the steering wheel, his hand hanging down, the car horn blaring non-stop.
