Jimmy didn't let Nia stay here for too long, sending her back early, as today's dangerous scene at the hospital couldn't guarantee anyone's safety.
Two agents were still on duty outside his room, and another two would come to take their shift later tonight. All this was arranged by Hughes, and Jimmy formally refused before accepting the arrangement.
In such circumstances, it was unnecessary for Nia to stay and increase the risk.
That night, Jimmy didn't dare to sleep too deeply, waking up periodically; in the latter part of the night, he even took turns resting with the two on-duty agents.
After all, fear of death is a natural instinct. The five-person military squad had put everyone on edge; with such firepower, no one in the entire Manhattan office, other than Jimmy, could confidently say they would survive.
Early the next morning, before going to work, Mahong visited the hospital.
Mahong, "Jimmy, I have news for you. Hughes informed me last night that this morning, people from the DHS will come over. They are going to assess whether this incident falls under a terrorist attack, and the case might get complicated."
Jimmy, propped up in bed, "What's going on? It shouldn't have reached the DHS, should it? How could they know about it so quickly in Washington, D.C.?"
Mahong shook his head, "I'm not quite sure yet. I should meet them as soon as I get to the office. I just wanted to give you a heads-up. If they get involved, the investigation will likely be transferred to them, and we'll be assisting."
Jimmy, "I understand, they probably will come to me too. Go back to the office, and thanks for everything. Give me a call if there is news."
Mahong nodded; since Jimmy had intestinal injuries, he couldn't eat from outside and was limited to hospital nutritional meals, so Mahong came empty-handed. After a brief chat, he left for work.
As Jimmy suspected, close to noon, two agents came, showed their IDs to the FBI agents at the door, and entered Jimmy's hospital room.
The leading agent showed his credential, "Agent Bill Becker, DHS, and this is my colleague, Agent Jack Dylan."
Jimmy, "Senior Agent Jimmy Yang with the FBI. What can I do for you?"
Bill pulled up a chair in front of Jimmy's bed, while Jack took out a notepad and pen to stand and take notes. "We're here about the shootout on the street yesterday. Could you go over what happened?"
Jimmy nodded and recounted the events of the shootout. He refrained from adding any judgment, strictly narrating the events as they occurred.
Agent Bill, "Why did you go to the Anti-Terrorism Bureau?"
Jimmy, "I was attacked a while ago and wanted to check if there were any leads there. They have strong investigative capabilities."
Bill, "Is this attack connected to the previous ones?"
Jimmy, "I'm still not clear on the intelligence regarding my attackers this time; I can't make a judgment yet. Perhaps you could inquire with Agent Mahong or Director Hughes."
Bill, "Tell us about being followed the day before yesterday and the attack early this morning."
Jimmy was somewhat surprised. The DHS had just arrived at the Manhattan office that morning, and they knew about the tail? Despite his surprise, he proceeded to describe how he had discovered the tail and how he had led them on a chase.
As for the early morning attack, that was simpler; since Jimmy was an 'Internal Star,' the forensic team had completed a basic ballistic analysis at the scene. Jimmy simply recounted the events, leaving it to them to reconstruct the scene if they could.
Bill nodded, "Okay, that's it for now. We'll head back to your office to continue the investigation and may need to disturb you a few more times."
Jimmy, "You're welcome, and I appreciate your help with investigating this case."
After the DHS agents left, there weren't many visitors for Jimmy anymore; everyone was busy investigating the case and had no time to come by.
Jimmy's leg injury was minor, just a graze that wasn't serious. He was treated, the wound was bandaged, and that was that. The abdominal injury was a bit more troublesome, mainly because he was in the hospital where recovery was the priority, so he stayed as still as possible.
Jimmy rarely got hurt, so he wasn't sure if the itching and numbness around the wound were normal, but he constantly felt the urge to reach down and scratch.
In the afternoon, an agent came in and said, "Agent Jimmy, there's someone outside looking for you. He says his name is James Baldwin."
"Captain James? Please let him in." Jimmy was surprised; how did news of his injury reach Little Rock City? Why would James come? And without a phone call, how did he find the hospital?
The agent escorted an old man in, and after a closer look, Jimmy said, "James, long time no see. Simon, you guys can take a break."
After instructing the agents at the door to take a break, the "James" in front of him began to speak, "Jimmy, you really do have a way of surprising people."
Jimmy smiled, withdrew his hand from beneath the covers, and stashed the revolver back under the pillow. "Where have you been? You disappeared for so long; I thought something had happened to you." The old man in front of him was Tom, and despite the makeup, Jimmy recognized him immediately.
Tom glanced toward the door, and Jimmy said, "They've left; they're not out there anymore."
