North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 657: 422 Who is targeting Jimmy?

Mahong received a call from Hughes, but he was actually quite puzzled.

Jimmy was his subordinate, and he had reviewed Jimmy's file more than once. Except for the administrative leave arranged after the early shootings, Jimmy hadn't received this kind of treatment for a long time, even though he had shot and killed several suspects since then.

Besides, Jimmy also had other special treatments, such as independently handling cases for the Homicide Team before Mahong's arrival, without partner support and supervision, which was simply unimaginable at the junior agent level.

Excluding some special reasons, the treatment Jimmy received was highly exceptional, even senior agents wouldn't receive such an attitude from the OPR.

After thinking it over, he still hadn't pinpointed the exact problem that led to the OPR investigation. Speaking of which, could it be that there was some issue with the operation on Ruiz's side?

Mahong thought for a while and decided to confirm with Ruiz's side. Although there were no current cases requiring Jimmy's attention, he was still one of his people. He couldn't act as if nothing had happened; this was slightly different from before.

Mahong went to Ruiz's office, closed the door after entering, shared Hughes's arrangement, and his own guesses. Ruiz was also perplexed; recalling the operation Jimmy handled at dawn, there seemed to be no problem, except that he was particularly harsh this time, resulting in a higher number of fatalities, nothing unusual was found.

Neither Mahong nor Ruiz were talkative people. Once they were convinced there was an inside story, they parted ways.

Upon returning, Mahong had Philicia start quietly investigating. Ruiz was more efficient than Mahong, with better connections; he quickly figured out that people from the OPR had been looking for Hughes that morning. It appeared there was something involving the OPR again.

Ruiz and Mahong successively got hold of some information, which led to them calling Jimmy. Of course, since Jimmy's phone was on silent, he didn't return their calls until he woke up in the afternoon.

The efficiency of the OPR was like Schrödinger's cat; for content needing urgent attention, they were quite agile, able to drag on or rapidly deploy resources for investigation, causing great anxiety.

And this investigation concerning Jimmy was a very high-profile case.

They not only arranged for people to re-investigate the teams Jimmy was involved with and the cases he handled, but also specifically called the Dallas office, requesting Supervisor Lambert to reassess Jimmy's performance during his secondment to Dallas over a month ago, and to re-evaluate the cases he participated in there.

Lambert was also baffled; he had an impression of Jimmy, but Jimmy's stay in Dallas was more than a year ago. What does this investigation mean now? Do you think there's an issue with the reports submitted by our Dallas office? Just because you are the Manhattan office, do you think you're a notch above? What is this all about!

Lambert ignored them and simply told them to look at the files themselves before hanging up. He then took out his phone and called Jimmy.

Jimmy was out shopping with Nia, now that she knew Jimmy wasn't a poor boy, Nia didn't hold back in consideration of Jimmy's feelings anymore. This shopping trip, she visited the stores she usually frequented, and not the mid to low-end clothing and jewelry stores she chose when accompanying Jimmy before.

Jimmy hadn't realized it at first because he usually shopped casually, not just in famous brand shops, he also visited small studios on the street, and not to mention flea markets; he never thought about how Nia previously avoided choosing expensive things to accommodate him, the poor boy.

It was only when he turned into a mobile rack carrying many bags that he realized the stores they entered today seemed to be mid to high-end ones. Although Nia was using her own card, the expenses were quite significant.

In fact, it wasn't a big issue to spend a bit more. As a police officer, Nia might not have a high salary, but her family situation ensured she definitely didn't lack pocket money. As long as she was happy, Jimmy continued to happily be her carrier, responsible only for carrying a smile and saying "Good," "Very beautiful," "It suits you," "This color is especially good on you, get another piece next to it too,"...

Jimmy's phone rang, and Nia came over to help him with some bags while Jimmy answered the call.

Jimmy: "Hi, Supervisor Lambert, good afternoon."

Listenting to the noise in the background, Lambert seemed to be in a somewhat busy place: "Jimmy, find a quiet place."

Jimmy: "Wait a moment."

Jimmy gestured to Nia towards a couch nearby to set down the bags, then stepped out of the store with his phone. The street outside was crowded, so he walked into a nearby alley where it was quiet, perfect for a smoke and a phone call.

Jimmy propped the phone against his shoulder, tilting his head to hold it in place, while he fished out a cigarette and lighter, saying, "Okay, I can talk now."

Lambert: "What have you done? Your office's OPR just called to inquire about the details of your secondment."

Jimmy was puzzled; why was the OPR popping up again? They hadn't shown up after several previous cases, so he thought they had stopped paying attention to his shootings of suspects. And why were they contacting the Dallas office? Could it be that this investigation wasn't related to last dawn's shootout?

Lambert didn't hear Jimmy respond and asked again: "Jimmy?"

Jimmy: "I'm here, was just thinking. Actually, I'm on administrative leave right now, just dealt with a gang case early yesterday morning, so I'm not clear about what's going on now, nobody informed me. Also, it's been a year and a half since my secondment to Dallas, why would they investigate now?"
