North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 635: Stage 412 victory_2

Following this direction, Jimmy led them directly into the woods to the location of escaped convict Riley's body.

Jimmy,"This is the escaped convict Riley I was chasing this time. I found him dead when I came in. I highly suspect he was killed by the resentful spirit we encountered earlier."

Mike nodded,"Check it." One of the two following him stepped forward, crouched down beside Riley, and started the examination.

Jimmy,"There's one more thing, look at that mound of dirt over there. I found a decaying corpse there. I haven't disturbed the area, just cleared a very small section."

Mike shook his head, and the last person following him went over. Jimmy illuminated the area with a flashlight while pulling out a cross from inside his clothes and began mumbling something inaudibly, definitely not English.

Jimmy switched to Heart Eye mode but detected no anomalies, which was quite strange. Whether it was Priest Royte from Little Stone City or Priest Horton from Dallas, when they performed their sacred rituals in this manner, there were no anomalies on their bodies, yet they were capable of harnessing special energy to vanquish evil spirits.

Priest Horton seemed even more adept than Priest Royte. Previously, his cross had transformed into something resembling a longsword, which Jimmy could see in Heart Eye mode.

The man before them was similar to Priest Royte; Jimmy couldn't detect any special energy on the small cross he held.

He knelt on one knee in front of the mound, the tip of the cross touching his forehead as he murmured under his breath. After a while, he looked up at the mound and made some motions Jimmy didn't understand, then finally stood up and put away the cross.

"There is indeed residual special energy here. From the scene, this is where the concentration is highest, but it is currently dissipating. It's true, it has vanished."

Mike turned to Jimmy,"How did you do it?"

Jimmy pulled out the Python revolver,"I could see her. Then I shot her, fired dozens of shots before I finally destroyed her, and she dissipated."

Mike,"I understand. How about the condition of the body?"

The person inspecting the body stood up and came over to Mike,"TThere is residual special energy on the body. We can basically confirm it's the work of the Resentful Spirit."

Mike nodded,"OK, since it's over, let's head back now. Jimmy, it's safe here now. You can call in other support to wrap up this case."

Jimmy's eyes widened. He had thought they were there to help him handle the situation with Riley. Was it just because of the Resentful Spirit? Jimmy,"You're leaving now? How should I explain finding Riley?"

Mike,"That's your problem. You'll need to handle it yourself. Let's go. We're heading back."

Mike and his two companions led the way with Jimmy following behind. The group left the forest, and Jimmy watched as they boarded the helicopter and flew away, still somewhat confused. These three were probably from a special department that dealt only with exceptional incidents; the case of his escaped convict held no significance for them.

After some thought, Jimmy took out his phone and dialed 911 directly.

"911, what is your emergency?"

Jimmy,"I'm FBI Special Agent Jimmy Yang. Please help me contact the Orange County Sheriff's office and arrange for two police units to come out, along with an ambulance."

911,"I'll need to confirm your identity, Agent."

Jimmy provided a code number and then gave the operator the GPS coordinates. He waited in his car afterward. Fifteen minutes later, a convoy consisting of two police cars and an ambulance arrived.

Jimmy led them into the forest,"What's that smell?" Jimmy, having been inside several times already, was accustomed to it, whereas the new police officers and emergency medical technicians, stepping in for the first time, found the decay quite strong.

The suspect Riley was carried by the emergency responders onto a stretcher to be taken directly to the Coroner's office for a determination of the cause of death.

The police, under Jimmy's guidance, saw the decaying corpse.

Jimmy,"This is why I called you here. While I was chasing the escaped convict Riley, I smelled an awful odor and then found this."

The officers glanced at Jimmy, had a quiet discussion on the side, and then came back to him,"Thank you, Agent Yang. We'll take it from here."

Jimmy nodded,"Thanks for your hard work. This is unrelated to my case; handle it as you see fit. I'll go back with the ambulance now. Goodbye."

The officers and Jimmy came out together, they had to wait here, the forensic experts needed to wait until daylight to come over after they started their workday, so the four unlucky ones could only zone out in the police car.

Jimmy looked at the time, it wasn't long until dawn, he decided not to disturb Mahong and the others while they rested, he would wait until daylight.

In the Coroner's office, Jimmy sat on the couch, drinking coffee, and soon dozed off leaning against the couch.

It wasn't until the Coroner arrived for work and woke Jimmy up that he became fully alert again, staying up all night wasn't a problem for him at all, he had been very alert before due to his preoccupation with other matters. Once he arrived at the Coroner's office and relaxed, he quickly fell asleep, even while sitting.

Jimmy stood up and shook his hand, "Sorry, was busy all night. FBI Special Agent Jimmy Yang, may I ask who you are?"

Coroner: "Dr. Matthew Rice, I've already received a call from the Sheriff's office."

Jimmy: "Thank you for your trouble, please complete the autopsy as soon as possible as not all of the escaped prisoners have been captured yet."

Dr. Matthew Rice nodded, "You take a break, I'll give you a report when it's over."

Watching Dr. Rice leave, Jimmy turned and poured himself another cup of coffee, since Dr. Rice asked him to wait for a while, that meant he would prioritize his case.

Jimmy took out his phone and dialed Mahong's number, by now he was surely awake.

Jimmy: "Hi, Mahong, I found him, but he's dead."

Mahong: "What happened?"

Jimmy: "He died in the woods, now I'm at the Orange County Coroner's office, waiting for the autopsy results."

Mahong: "Understood, let me know when you have the results."

Jimmy: "How about your side?"

Mahong: "Still searching, Newburgh police have arranged for a temporary blockade of the surrounding blocks, but we have limited time and can't keep it closed indefinitely."

Jimmy: "Okay, I'll come over to you as soon as I have the results."

Mahong: "Yeah, let's leave it at that, we still have people to find."

Jimmy hung up, feeling lucky himself, but it seemed Mahong and the others weren't having much luck.

Jimmy glanced at his watch; he had enough time. He stood up and left, after consulting a security guard, he bought breakfast next door to fill his stomach. After a whole day of investigation the previous day, with only breakfast and the rest of the time eating his emergency rations – cookies and chocolate, and bottled water from the car – he was quite hungry.

After eating breakfast outside and having a double espresso, Jimmy returned to the Coroner's office just as the autopsy had concluded, Dr. Matthew Rice was already sitting in his office writing the report. True to his title, the Coroner had completed the autopsy and determination of cause of death in such a short time.

Dr. Rice: "Agent Yang, please wait a moment, the report will be ready soon."

Jimmy replied with a smile, "No hurry, carry on with your work."

Soon, a printed autopsy report was handed to Jimmy. Jimmy opened the autopsy report, which was flawless with text complemented by photos.

The escaped convict Rob Reilly's body showed multiple frostbite marks, no external injuries on the body surface, and internal organs were intact, ruling out homicide. The postmortem lividity was bright red, the body was naturally stretched out, with multiple hemorrhagic spots inside, lung edema, myocardial edema, and muscle fiber breaks consistent with death by freezing.

Although Jimmy knew that he was actually killed by a Resentful Spirit, since the Coroner had concluded death by freezing, then Reilly was definitely dead from freezing, no matter what, he was surely dead from freezing, which gave Jimmy some peace of mind.

Jimmy thanked Dr. Rice, the Coroner, and left the office with the report in a much more relaxed demeanor.

Pulling out his phone, he called Mahong to ask for their whereabouts, and Jimmy drove to their location with the autopsy report, ready to join the pursuit of the second person. The case was already halfway concluded.
