North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 566: 385 holiday reimbursement done

Jimmy dared not act rashly, for it would be a significant loss if he ended up damaging the plane when the hijackers hadn't caused any trouble. There was only one empty hole here, but its location was problematic. It offered a glimpse into the cockpit, but it faced the captain's seat and didn't provide a view of the hijacker's position.

Jimmy left the bathroom; he was just a human with some special abilities, and his guns were ordinary—a Glock and a revolver. In this situation, he simply had no way to deal with the hijacker.

Bill, the Court Police, had returned. Jimmy, together with Bill and a flight attendant, gathered and shared his findings, spreading the worry so they could all share in the burden and alleviate some of the pressure.

After taking a look, Bill shook his head and said, "We can't control the hijacker unless he happens to walk behind the captain. Otherwise, we simply can't shoot; we don't understand those pipelines."

Jimmy, "Should we get the passengers involved? See if any of them are familiar with planes."

Bill gave Jimmy a look as if he were an idiot, and the flight attendant took over the conversation, "No, the cabin announcement would be heard in the cockpit too."

Jimmy spread his hands, "Well, then I'm out of ideas. That was the best point for shooting already; anywhere else would require removing even more things."

Jimmy turned to the flight attendant, "By the way, are there any other Federation agents on the plane?"

Flight Attendant, "No, there are no air marshals scheduled for this flight."

Suddenly remembering the man with a gun, Jimmy reasoned that anyone allowed to board with a weapon must certainly belong to some agency. After some thought, Jimmy led the flight attendant to the economy class, pointed out the location, and asked her to bring the man over. Three heads are better than one, and at this point, Jimmy had no choice but to recruit more backup.

The flight attendant spoke to the man who then followed her towards first class. Jimmy immediately turned and went back to the galley. Fortunately, they had been whispering the entire time, and despite curious glares from first-class passengers, no one had reacted.

Jimmy flashed his FBI badge at his waist, "FBI Special Agent Jimmy. May I ask who you are?"

The man shook hands with Jimmy, "CBP (Customs and Border Protection), Brian Gatewood. What's the matter?"

Jimmy, "May I see your badge?"

Brian nodded and took out an eagle badge from his pocket, the United States Border Patrol, USBP.

Jimmy, "Are you familiar with airplanes?"

Brian shook his head, "Why do you ask?"

Jimmy looked at Bill and realized they were three agents from completely different departments, with no command over each other. "Bill, should we tell him?"

Bill nodded, and Jimmy turned to Brian, "This is Court Police Bill. This plane has been hijacked; the hijacker has entered the cockpit, and we are still unclear about his motives. He's holding the captain and first officer hostage. We've confirmed that there are no air marshals on this flight; it seems it's just us now."

Brian looked at them in horror, "A hijacking? FK."

Jimmy, "Stay calm. The rest of the passengers don't know yet, do you want them to panic?"

FBI Jimmy, Court Police Bill, CBP Brian, and the flight attendant, the four of them stood in the not so spacious galley, completely silent, all at a loss for words.

Suddenly, there was commotion from the cabin, with many people exclaiming in alarm. The flight attendant quickly went out, "Look outside." They rushed to the window, and to their dismay, a fighter jet appeared on the right side of the plane.

The eyes of Jimmy and his companions nearly popped out. The painful memories of 9/11 had already sensitized Americans, and now they were faced with another hijacking. The possibility of the military being ordered to shoot down the passenger plane couldn't be ruled out. If hit by an air-to-air missile, survival was unthinkable. Following the custom of the U.S. Air Force, if escorts were sent, there would never be just one jet. Looking out the left-side window, another fighter jet was in position behind the plane, just slightly behind the one on the right.

Jimmy, "We can't wait any longer, Bill, I'm going to make a move."

Without waiting for their response, Jimmy immediately turned and headed for the bathroom. Bill and Brian followed him and saw the tissue box that Jimmy had dismantled. Jimmy first looked through the only hole, then picked up a knife, preparing to carve out another hole where the wiring passed through.

The fighter jets outside seemed to have affected the hijacker, who now moved behind the co-pilot and looked at the battle through the side window. Of course, this was something only Jimmy could tell. He didn't care at all at this point, no matter what this pipeline was for—his only thought was to act.

After prying open the outside shell, Jimmy was delighted to find that the pipeline didn't fill the entire hole, leaving theoretically enough space for bullets to pass through. The angle was tricky though; he would have to wait for the hijacker to be in a specific position. Earlier on, with the help of Heart Eye, he had only noticed the presence of a hole but had never considered its actual size.

Jimmy drew the Glock, aimed at the small hole—small, but sufficient. He was confident. As long as the hijacker moved a bit behind the pilot, he could shoot. This was the closest hole to the hijacker he could find.

Jimmy watched the hijacker intently. The man had moved back to the middle from behind the co-pilot. If he shifted just a little bit more to the left, Jimmy could take his shot. Yet, to his frustration, the bastard wouldn't move that tiny bit of distance required.

Jimmy's gritted teeth made both Bill and Brian glad they weren't tasked with such a mission: to shoot the hijacker through an incredibly small hole with only a narrow line of fire was asking too much. They also admired this young guy who looked just over twenty, for coming up with such a solution under pressure and voluntarily taking on the most difficult step—it was quite rare.

Jimmy had no idea what they were thinking; he was just acting out of self-preservation. If the fighter jets hadn't shown up, it's likely that he, like them, would be left dumbfounded, for wantonly destroying a pipeline could lead to trouble he couldn't afford.

"Bang"—a sudden shot startled both Bill and Brian. Jimmy slowly retracted the Glock, replacing it in its holster. "Done," he said.

Both men stood stunned at the bathroom door, looking at Jimmy. "Did you take him down?"

Jimmy nodded. "Yeah, he moved into position just in time. Had I not taken the shot, the opportunity would have been missed. Let's go meet with the pilot now."

Bill and Brian stepped back a bit, opening the way out of the bathroom for Jimmy who then left between them. The flight attendant outside had overheard Jimmy and pressed a button next to the cockpit door, speaking briefly with the pilot before the door was opened.

The hijacker lay motionless on the floor, blood flowing from his head, already staining the carpet. The pilot and co-pilot also had blood on them. There was a cut on the pilot's neck, but he hadn't been fatally wounded, just a scratch that had bled a little.

Jimmy: "Captain, are you all right?"

Indeed, no one contested Jimmy's lead. When the cockpit door opened, Jimmy stood at the forefront, even though Bill and Brian were in their forties, they let Jimmy take the initiative.

The Captain shook hands with Jimmy. "Kyle Moore. I'm okay. Who fired?"

Jimmy: "I did. Glad you're all right. The crisis is over, please notify ground control as soon as possible. Those fighter jets outside are making me nervous."

Kyle nodded, closed the cockpit door, and returned to his seat.

Jimmy finally relaxed, turned around, and intended to head back to his seat, only to find Nia standing in the galley. He hadn't noticed her there before, she had remained silent the whole time. Jimmy walked over and put his arm around her shoulder, heading back to his seat. "It's okay now, it's been resolved."

The gunshot had alarmed everyone, and the noise from the economy class hadn't ceased. But soon, the plane's intercom kicked in, and Captain Kyle's voice came through, "Ladies and gentlemen, we need to make an emergency landing in Chicago. Please don't worry, we will be landing shortly. Please return to your seats and fasten your seat belts. Thank you."

Following the captain's announcement, the cabin finally began to quiet down.

At Chicago O'Hare Airport, the plane landed as directed by traffic control, not at the terminal but at an empty stand. As the airstair was positioned, various police cars and airport buses filled the area below. Jimmy and the others from first class were among the first to disembark, but as soon as he left the airstair with Bill and Brian, they were taken away by personnel from the FBI's Chicago office.

Nia was aware of the situation, knowing that Jimmy and the others had to undergo an investigation. She could only choose to wait at the hotel, head to Las Vegas herself, or return directly to New York. Of course, the costs were covered by the airline, no additional payment needed.

Although Nia wanted to wait for Jimmy, he knew that with a hijacking case, it wouldn't be resolved in a day or two and the investigation would probably outlast Nia's vacation. So he let Nia decide whether to go sightseeing alone or to go back. With no choice left, Nia decided to return to New York; Las Vegas was Jimmy's idea after all, and without him, she had no interest in going solo.

This incident truly was an unwarranted disaster; Jimmy's rare vacation for two was utterly spoiled. Thankfully, as he wasn't the hijacker, he was still able to make phone calls. When Hughes heard Jimmy's news over the phone, his mind was blown.

To prevent Jimmy from dwelling on that paranormal case, Huster had intentionally granted him time off for a break. How could it be that just a few hours later, he was now in Chicago? And a hijacking? After 911, hijacking incidents were regarded as top-level threats. Aside from a few scares, the past two years had been relatively calm. How could Jimmy stumble upon such mess just by going on a trip?

After hanging up the phone, Huster immediately contacted others to enquire about the situation, while Jimmy and the other two, along with the pilot and the flight attendants, entered the FBI's Chicago office for questioning.
