North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 560: The case 382 got hijacked_3

Jimmy took out the interrogation record he had intended for Dave to sign and showed it to Hughes, "Then that very peculiar death occurred the day before yesterday. According to the forensic doctor's post-mortem, there were no external anomalies on Dave's body, no signs of bruising or beating, but his internal organs were damaged to various extents. Plus, the prisoner in the cell next to him died of fright in the middle of the night, literally scared to death. So, I speculate there might be some abnormal circumstances here, quite possibly a supernatural event."

Hughes: "Hold on, how do you know it's a supernatural event?"

Jimmy: "Process of elimination and personal experience. When I was temporarily assigned to Dallas, I investigated several disappearances at the same location. It turned out there was a Resentful Spirit in the river that caused several people to vanish. In the end, with the help of Father Horton, we eliminated the Resentful Spirit. Lambert, the supervisor, is aware of it; Father Horton was also someone he had called upon."

As for the incident of Dave's death, it was the first time the forensic doctor had encountered something like this. Coupled with the expression of terror and the manner of death of the prisoner next door, and the fact that the surveillance didn't show anyone approaching, I'm inclined to think it might be another supernatural event. If it was man-made, theoretically, other people in the detention center would have some awareness, and surveillance can be tampered with, but not all the guards and prisoners can be bribed, right? From this perspective, the likelihood of a supernatural event is somewhat higher."

After thinking for a moment, Hughes nodded in agreement with Jimmy's explanation, "Continue."

Jimmy: "Excluding other possibilities, if it was a supernatural event, I re-evaluated Dave's motive for killing the taxi driver and the homeless man. I strongly suspect that Dave's killings might have been ritual sacrifices of souls to the Evil Spirit to enhance its strength. What's inexplicable, however, is why the Evil Spirit would suddenly kill its host at night and leave, considering that Dave had just undergone interrogation and everything appeared normal."

Therefore, I suspect Dave might not have been the true host for the Evil Spirit. The reason being, after Dave was captured, someone went to his apartment and turned it upside down, apparently searching for something. This also suggests that Dave wasn't acting alone but was a member of a team.

Based on this assumption, it's possible that there's more than one Evil Spirit host behind the scenes. So, I contacted Chuck from the NYPD to help investigate recent death records within New York. These are the points of death records in the five boroughs that Chuck and Nia helped compile." Jimmy took out the maps that Chuck and Nia had assisted with and handed them to Hughes.

Hughes looked at the full set of marked points, "Are you hoping to find others like Dave through these records?"

Jimmy: "Yes, the most likely scenario from the available data suggests exactly that. There were fewer death records here in Manhattan, so I started with Brooklyn. I drove around in that area all night and heard gunshots early this morning. By the time I arrived, the gunman was trying to flee. I apprehended him, but the Evil Spirit inside him emerged and killed him."

Hughes: "The Evil Spirit came out? You saw it?"

Jimmy nodded: "Yes, Father Horton performed an exorcism blessing on me once, and I've always carried the Cross Necklace the Priest gave me. So, I guess I have a bit of a superpower. I'm able to cause some harm to lower-level Spiritual Bodies."

Jimmy pulled out his Cross Necklace to show Hughes; this was a reason he had long chosen to cover up his Heart Eye Ability, and he wasn't lying. Father Horton's exorcism and his cross could be verified; no one could say otherwise. Moreover, with a bit more talk from Father Horton, Jimmy's final blow to the Resentful Spirit in the river might just earn him some extra points.

Hughes: "Continue."

Jimmy: "Afterward, I calculated that I fired 24 shots at the Evil Spirit; it eventually dissipated and disappeared. Since this was my first time confronting an Evil Spirit alone, I'm not sure whether it was killed or just driven away. Oh, Hughes, I can't write a report about the shootout early this morning. All my fired bullets ended up in the wall, and I'm still puzzled over how I'll explain firing that many shots."

Hughes looked at the materials Jimmy had placed on the table; he hadn't expected this serial killing case to unravel so many layers.

Hughes: "Go to the conference room first."

Jimmy nodded and left, sensing Hughes had something to confirm. Whether he was going to check Jimmy's story with Lambert or the forensic doctor's autopsy report, Jimmy was confident that what he said was sound.

A few minutes later, Hughes called Jimmy into his office, "Take these materials back with you. Wrap up the serial killing case as soon as you can. As for the supernatural event, I've already been in touch with the Archdiocese of New York to deal with it. You don't need to worry about that anymore."

Jimmy's eyes widened, "Do they know how to locate these Evil Spirits?"

Hughes: "Don't worry, they are professionals in this area. We just need to focus on our regular duties. Go on."

Jimmy: "Right, Supervisor Lambert once mentioned that our headquarters has a team that specializes in paranormal cases. Can I learn about their status?"

Hughes: "Don't inquire about it, and don't even think about transferring there. Just do your job and handle the cases. Go."

Jimmy: "Understood."

Jimmy reorganized the materials on Hughes' desk and took them back to his own office. However, the maps that Chuck and Nia had worked on were kept by Hughes.
