North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 546: 378 Refuse to trade

Jimmy thought for a moment, and since the suspect had already been arrested, there was no need to fret over a day or two. He contacted Chuck and decided that once the gunman, Dave, was confirmed able to leave the hospital, he would be thrown into the detention center to cool off before doing anything else.

Chuck pondered for a long time and ultimately decided to take over the gunman because the two cases were too similar. The hospital had discovered that Dave's hands were covered with glue, completely concealing his fingerprints. There was a medical file written by the doctor, which could serve as evidence.

After receiving Chuck's call, Jimmy thought things over but realized he couldn't just hand the suspect over because the reason they caught this suspect was actually the taxi driver case, which had already been handed over to the FBI. Unless Chuck took the lead, Jimmy would have to send the case back to the NYPD.

However, Jimmy didn't completely reject Chuck. He agreed that Chuck could be present during the interrogation, and they would work on the case together.

Chuck also agreed but said he would come over in the afternoon to fully understand the investigation that Jimmy and his team had conducted. Handling cases that intertwined different agencies' responsibilities was always troublesome. This was only manageable because they had a good relationship; if it were someone less familiar, they could only start after Jimmy's team had finished their part.

The hospital had already confirmed that Dave's injuries weren't too serious, just requiring regular check-ups. Upon receiving notification, the NYPD patrol officer arranged by Chuck immediately transported Dave to the detention center.

Everything went smoothly. Dave was given the opportunity to make a phone call at the detention center to inform his lawyer. Jimmy later learned that the lawyer would be ready on the third day, and that's when they could arrange the interrogation.

Jimmy arrived at the detention center in advance, where Dave's registration information was required for the detention. Since there wasn't a standard interrogation procedure at the hospital, it wasn't a big problem that Dave kept silent. However, once in the detention center, he no longer had that luxury.

After getting the registration information from the detention center, Jimmy contacted Hughes. Following Hughes's negotiations, they finally obtained a search warrant signed by a judge. Forensic personnel went to Dave's apartment with the search warrant, and Jimmy followed them.

Dave's apartment was opened without breaking down the door since Dave had already been arrested and his keys were in forensics' possession. The place looked typical of a single middle-aged man, fully equipped with household appliances but cluttered with countless items. It wasn't littered with garbage, but it was far from clean.

This caused the forensics team considerable trouble, as they needed to conduct a thorough examination of the room. The messier the room, the more work they had to do.

What Jimmy was most concerned about was finding something that could convict Dave. Other than money, the taxi driver's belongings were mostly intact, and no fingerprints were found at the scene. The best incriminating evidence would be the gun. The gun Dave had when he was arrested had been sent for ballistic testing, and the bullet fragments from the deceased taxi drivers would be tested for ballistic marks as well. If they matched, it would greatly aid in his conviction, but there were no results yet.

Discovering more items in his room would increase the chances of a match.

Jimmy didn't get his hands dirty; he just stood at the door, watching the forensics team work hard, mainly worried he might inadvertently destroy potential fingerprints. There is a lot of content in American dramas and movies about investigative procedures, but those details are omitted here. In any case, Jimmy's waiting was not in vain.

The forensic personnel successfully found a movable wooden board in a cupboard, behind which was a wooden box built into the wall. Inside were two handguns and some bullets, crucially one with a silencer.

Finally, Jimmy breathed a sigh of relief. If they hadn't found it, he would have had to take matters into his own hands. He had noticed the irregular space in the wall early on but couldn't act too conspicuously.

With this, Jimmy had achieved his goal. What remained was to see the lab results. After returning, he would need to find a way to urge the lab, as jumping the queue like in the previous explosion case was truly exhilarating. Getting results in one or two days was great, but now, after two days, the ballistic comparison results were still pending, probably due to low priority.

Jimmy returned to the office and finally relaxed, hoping for some good news from the lab. The taxi driver case had been ongoing for over a month, longer than the longest terrorist bombing case Jimmy had handled previously. An early resolution would bring an early release.

While Jimmy continued to leave Dave hanging, waiting for the lab report, society did not stand still. The gang "war" that Ruiz had asked him to put on hold a few days ago was fervently preparing in full swing.

The reason gangs declare war in advance is mostly to intimidate their rivals, causing unease among their rank-and-file and middle management, encouraging defections as early as possible. Gang conflicts aim to seize territory, take over markets, gather more followers, and are not solely about killing. Trinidad's intent to cause trouble for Razor was to expand his own territory into Brooklyn, securing a small foothold in that chaotic area to facilitate market expansion and prepare for conquering more territories later.

Jimmy had already looked into Razor's situation. His people were decent enough, not involved in the drugs trade that Jimmy despised, just dabbling in protection rackets and underground gambling—a relatively minor business affecting some people but far better than more malignant gangs. Part of the reason Jimmy was willing to spare Razor's life was due to this.
