North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 523: 369 got a ticket for the first time

The vacation was only half a day away, and Jimmy, upon returning, had nothing else to do, so he called Nia to check in. Having been unable to meet for the two days of her leave, being a detective was truly hard. Nia was still busy with the case, having just been promoted to detective, currently working with Chuck on an investigation, leaving her no time to meet with Jimmy.

The detective bureau of the NYPD was extremely busy. Federal cases were always fewer than local cases, and of course, federal cases were generally more serious, so even though Jimmy was off, Nia couldn't sync up with him.

Upon returning to work, intelligence officer Nick delivered very disappointing news to Jimmy.

In recent days, Nick had also been working as a field agent. Utilizing his sources, he conducted a detailed investigation on the man found in the surveillance footage. Regrettably, due to insufficient clarity, facial recognition failed to match the specific person. They could only rely on manual monitoring of the route, and after several days, they had not found anyone similar.

It seemed that the case was likely to be put on hold. Jimmy hadn't expected to return to work only to receive bad news, erasing his good mood from the end of his vacation instantly.

Jimmy: "Nick, where did you investigate? Were there any markers?"

Nick handed a map to Jimmy: "These red routes are the ones we've already investigated. The other parts haven't been looked into. This blue dot is where we watched the video that day."

Jimmy glanced at the map. Alright, Nick, experienced as he was, had already covered the area between the traffic and store surveillance cameras, leaving little hope even if Jimmy were to try himself.

Jimmy: "It's very thorough. If we really can't find him, let it be. I'll also check at the police station. If there really aren't any leads, then this case might just have to be put on hold."

Nick nodded. He too had been swamped these past few days. Since Jimmy didn't need him for the moment, it was better for him to go back and rest.

Jimmy took out his phone and called old man Chuck: "Hey, Chuck, have you received any clues about the taxi driver's murder recently?"

Chuck: "No, we don't have time to deal with that right now. We're outside investigating a case, a child kidnapping. If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up."

Jimmy: "Wait, a kidnapping? Did you notify the department?"

Chuck: "Detective Kimberly Rice is already on the scene. Alright, we're handling the case now." After that, Chuck hung up the phone.

Jimmy held his phone, frowning. Kidnapping, especially of a child, was a major crime. Kidnapping itself is a severe federal offense. If the child were to be harmed, a life sentence wouldn't be out of the question. New York State even has the death penalty, though it's seldom enforced. If things really escalated, another execution wasn't an impossibility. The detective bureau deploying, especially sending Kimberly Rice, who specialized in abduction and missing person cases, signified a major incident.

Never mind, his own case involving the murdered taxi driver was still unresolved. For now, he wouldn't concern himself with their affairs. If support was needed, Hughes would manage it.

Jimmy picked up the materials Nick had organized and sat down to start reviewing them. After several days of investigation, they had accumulated quite a substantial amount of data.

By now, they had at least confirmed the suspect's characteristics: a Caucasian male, about 175cm tall, of average build, wearing a black jacket and a hat, with glasses, during the night, and unlikely to be sunglasses, so probably short-sighted, hairstyle unknown due to the hat covering, but at least confirming it wasn't long hair.

There was a surveillance reconstruction image. Although not very clear, it showed the facial contours. If the culprit could be found in the near future, this video could also serve as auxiliary evidence. If it took too long, it would be problematic; people can change significantly in just a month, and if he had intentionally altered his physique, matching him would be difficult.

According to Nick's investigation of nearby residents, the locals all claimed they didn't recall seeing this person, which almost confirmed that the man wasn't a resident of that area. If he indeed was nearby, then it could either be at a hotel or short-term rental apartments.

Jimmy, holding the photo and map, tidied up the rest of the materials, and arranged them neatly on the table before he got up and left the office. His destiny seemed inclined toward relentless labor. Best to head back out and continue the investigation.

The Bronx, that chaotic place, Jimmy really didn't want to be there, feeling his moral bottom line was lowering every time he visited. Along the streets, drug-addled zombies wobbled around, thugs traded shady items in the corners, and if he passed by an alley, he might see someone lying on the ground, either drunk or mugged. If Jimmy lingered here long enough, he feared he might become desensitized to these scenes.

Jimmy parked his car in a parking lot, put on his sunglasses, and began to search for a roadside motel following the map. Of course, there were also unregistered motels that were harder to spot unless he could find a local as a guide, which he knew no one here.

"FBI, have you seen this man?" Jimmy arrived at a motel, flashed his badge, and then showed the printed image of the suspect to the receptionist.

"No recollection, detective. How many times have you guys come to ask this now? Haven't you caught him yet?"

Jimmy frowned and looked at him: "Has someone else been here to ask before? Who were they?"

"Also from the FBI. They've come at least twice, two different people, a young man and a middle-aged man, both white."
