Jimmy shook his head, "Nothing particularly special in the way of clues, everything we have so far someone is handling. I'm still thinking about the direction of the investigation after this. Enough about that."
Jimmy and Nia returned to the living room, where the coffee he had prepared in advance was poured. Jimmy asked Nia to wait in the living room while he went back to the kitchen.
Although he had prepared some semi-finished dishes beforehand, it still took Jimmy quite a bit of time to finish up. He set everything on the dining table and picked a bottle of red wine from the rack before they sat down across from each other.
Jimmy was a devout believer on the surface, while Nia didn't really have a religious faith. To accommodate Jimmy, they held hands across the table and said a prayer before the meal.
"The taste is great. I didn't expect your cooking skills to be so good," Nia complimented Jimmy after tasting the appetizer and then took a sip of the red wine.
Jimmy: "Glad you like it." The shameless fellow just claimed the cooking as his own, not mentioning at all that he had bought it from outside.
The two chatted casually as they ate, and suddenly Nia shifted the conversation toward Jimmy's family. "Jimmy, you hardly ever talk about your family. Are you at odds with them?"
Jimmy blinked and paused for a moment. "Why bring this up all of a sudden? Oh, it's not a dispute, it's just that I'm on my own. Wherever I am, that's where my home is."
Nia: "Sorry, I didn't realize it was like that."
Jimmy laughed and shook his head: "It's okay. Birth, aging, sickness, and death are unavoidable for everyone. It's all in the past now."
Nia: "So, where are you from?"
Jimmy: "Little Rock, Arkansas. I used to be a cop there."
Nia's eyes widened. Jimmy worked for the FBI, and his records were not available at the police station, nor could they be accessed.
Nia: "A cop? You really don't look it."
"Haha, just two years with the county police. Chief James was very good to me. Thinking about having left for such a long time, I kind of miss them."
"Then have you not gone back to see them?"
"I went back last year, all is well. I wasn't like you, though; I was a Patrol Officer, mostly out on the roads patrolling."
As they spoke about their shared profession, they chatted about some of the funny incidents from Jimmy's past and his severe criticism of NYPD's car pursuit behaviors. As a former member of the Arkansas police, Jimmy strongly denounced these competitions which were more about the size of the car's gas tank than actual strategy, preferring the straightforward approach of his home state.
Nia was very interested because she had never received PIT training during her police academy days, and opportunities to pursue high-speed chases were rare with the NYPD given New York's traffic conditions, which meant the high speeds were more like normal highway speeds, nothing like the thrilling chases in the less populated South.
Since Nia was interested, Jimmy didn't mind, and thought it might be fun to head to the police training ground some time. In the past year, besides pitting one person, he had not really driven much, he was itching for some action.
After finishing their wine and meal, they sat on the couch holding each other, watching some banal TV shows. Jimmy's hand started to move on its own, and Nia resisted only slightly before giving up and not rejecting him. Gradually, they disappeared from the living room.
Jimmy and Nia kissed their way to the bedroom and as their hands roamed, they quickly revealed themselves to each other. Jimmy wasn't inexperienced, but something about Nia's movements felt a bit off. However, it wasn't the time to think about that, and he quickly understood.
"Is this your first time?" Nia blushed and nodded gently, and Jimmy kissed her deeply.
The next morning, when Jimmy woke up and looked at Nia lying beside him, he kissed her cheek, got dressed, cleaned up, and went to make breakfast.
Of course, Nia was already awake but she stayed in bed, smiling as she watched Jimmy tidy up and leave the bedroom.
A while later, Nia got dressed, freshened up, and came out to the living room. Jimmy's place was stocked with spare toiletries and towels which definitely saved any awkwardness that morning.
"Just a moment, it'll be ready soon." Jimmy fried eggs and bacon, and made French fries. Once done, he plated everything and brought it to the table, poured two glasses of milk from the fridge, and then sat down with Nia.
Jimmy drove Nia home; she had already taken the day off with Chuck, so she planned to rest at home that day. After leaning out of the car window to say goodbye to Jimmy, she went upstairs, and Jimmy drove off to continue his work at the station.
