Riley shrugged, "I had nothing else to do, so I just came over early."
Gordon said, "Jimmy, that Javier Vance has already been caught. He confessed last night that he was the middleman, responsible for purchasing and inspecting goods. He wasn't involved in the subsequent transportation."
Jimmy exclaimed, "Ah, that's the first piece of good news today. What about El Kroger? Has he confessed?"
Gordon shook his head, "He's a tough nut to crack, but he should break soon. Kerry and the others didn't go home at all last night; they stayed up dealing with him."
Jimmy asked, "Was the Los Angeles apartment checked?"
Gordon replied, "It was clean. They didn't find anything. It seems their target has always been New York."
Jimmy sighed, "When will this end? This case is too troublesome."
Gordon looked at Jimmy and smiled, "We're doing pretty well, at least we've been making progress on the case. Without these leads, we'd still be out there looking for bombs."
Jimmy nodded, "Now, I just hope we can get the information on the Camel soon, find the mastermind behind this, and close the case."
Riley cut in, "Jimmy, how long have you been working on this case?"
Jimmy replied, "Two to three weeks now. It's a very complex case. We started with just a tiny clue and gradually pulled out a big fish."
Before Riley could respond, Kerry entered the conference room, "Hey, guys, he's confessed. You've got work to do now."
Jimmy asked, "What's the result?"
Kerry, clearly annoyed, stated, "The identity of the Camel has been thoroughly investigated." He placed the folder he was carrying on the table and slid it towards Jimmy, "John Bird, originally from France, came to the United States in the '90s, set up a consulting company, mainly offering localization support for French firms in the US. Of course, that's all according to the records."
"His real name is Nu'er Mohammod. He developed his identity in France, so after coming to the US, he has always operated using his French identity. His specific country of origin is currently unknown, but it is suspected to be Syria or some Middle Eastern country. Clearly, they had started planning long ago and began preparing for this case after receiving the orders. Apart from activating people who were already hidden within the country, they also smuggled a group in from abroad. The driver Abdul was one of those they smuggled in and set up with a false identity."
El Kroger was one of their members and also an important figure. The three people you killed were sent by Nu'er to pick up El. After your raid on the warehouse yesterday, El came to the vicinity of the warehouse. Upon realizing something was amiss, he went back to clear his temporary residence and arranged for the makeshift bomb to be set off."
Nuer had people ready to pick up El, prepared to leave, but we got delayed yesterday, and just now, when I had someone investigate Nuer, I found out he bought a plane ticket for last night and has already flown to Paris; he should have landed by now. El was supposed to go with him, the ticket was all set, but I guess El never met up with him, so he took off early by himself.
"Fxxk!" Jimmy slammed the file down on the table. "We've been at this for so long, and the mastermind just ran off?"
Kerry nodded at the angry Jimmy, "Yes, he's gone. If we hadn't incidentally checked his immigration status when we were looking him up, we would have missed the plane ticket detail. According to the airport surveillance footage from last night around 8 PM, Nuer indeed boarded the plane and left."
Jimmy looked as if he had lost all will to live, toiling so long only to catch the small fry while the key mastermind got away. It was unbearable, like swallowing a lump of shit.
Kerry: "That's the situation now, and it's your time to act. Nuer owns two properties and a company, and you'll need to investigate and gather evidence at these locations. The addresses are in the file."
Jimmy picked up the file again, "Riley, one of his properties is in Newark, your turf, and the other is in Brooklyn, the company is in Manhattan. Gordon, you take over." Jimmy closed the file and handed it to Gordon.
Gordon glanced at it and said, "Jimmy, go back and apply for a search warrant. Now that things have come to this, let's just follow the procedure; it will also facilitate applying for a warrant later on."
Jimmy nodded, "Okay, I'll head back to the office first."
On his way back to the office, Jimmy received a call from ATF Agent Johnny Bullock. The analysis results were in, but they were now of little significance and would only serve as evidence in prosecuting El Kroger, the person they had caught. With the apprehension, many things had simply become icing on the cake.
Back at the office, Jimmy reported the situation to Hughes and then proceeded to apply for a search warrant. He had been to the Federation court before; though it was his first time applying for a search warrant by himself, he encountered no mishaps. The judge, after reviewing the evidence chain, issued the search warrant. The bomb terrorist attack case was too significant; despite the vague details about what Jimmy was searching for on the warrant, it was approved—a special circumstance treated specially.
Theoretically, a search warrant should be specific, such as stating what exactly is being searched for, so the warrant would specify certain locations, and non-specified areas should not be searched. For instance, if you're searching for an M16, you can't search in boxes or containers that obviously couldn't conceal an M16. Likewise, if you're requiring a person to surrender a cell phone or a computer, you can't take their flash drives. Of course, that's just in theory; special circumstances require special handling.
Although the process went smoothly, by the time Jimmy got the search warrant, it was already the afternoon. After arranging an early appointment with the Evidence Department, they split into two teams, headed to Nuer's office in Manhattan and his apartment in Brooklyn.
Jimmy didn't accompany the Evidence Department team: he just handed them the search warrant. If the scene needed to be sealed off, they were to contact NYPD to hold the fort initially, and call the field agents later as necessary.
However, things didn't go smoothly. Before Jimmy could take a breath, tragic news arrived. The bomb trigger was activated upon entering Nuer's apartment in Brooklyn, setting off the hidden bomb there, resulting in serious injuries to three Evidence Department agents. The only good news was that the ambulance arrived very quickly after the explosion, and although the three were severely injured, their lives were saved.
Jimmy immediately alerted Riley that Nuer's property in Newark needed to be cordoned off in advance, evacuate everyone in the vicinity, and wait for the bomb squad to inspect before investigating evidence in the room.
As for the apartment in Brooklyn, it was left to the bomb disposal team's experts to inspect the site. As for the evidence, there wasn't much hope left. The blast was powerful; even though the apartment building didn't collapse, the room was completely destroyed, leaving almost no chance of investigating evidence in such a condition.
