While the person at the entrance returned to the room, Jimmy immediately rushed to the third floor, shifting the Glock to his right hand to aim at the door of the room, and Ryan also came upstairs, kicking the gun from the man's hand on the floor in the process.
A few agents had reached the upper floor, but due to the limited space in the hallway, only Jimmy and Ryan could move forward towards the door, one behind the other. The agents behind them didn't follow but stayed near the staircase entrance to keep watch, also checking the position behind them.
Jimmy, "FBI, put down your weapon, raise your hands, and come out to surrender." He went through the routine procedure to avoid problems in the report later.
After waiting for a few seconds, the people inside the room didn't surrender or make any move. Jimmy signaled to Ryan to aim at the left side of the room. Then Jimmy crouched down. He didn't quite trust Ryan's shooting skills behind him; he didn't want to be shot by someone at his back. So, he chose a non-standard posture. After crouching, Jimmy used his left hand for support, pushed off with his legs, and slid to the doorway, where he preemptively aimed and shot two men inside, while Ryan also ran forward a few steps and fired into the room.
The muffled sounds of the women's screams were heard, as they were gagged and their mouths taped up, could only make muffled noises.
As Jimmy and Ryan fired into the room, the people inside also fired toward the doorway. However, they hadn't anticipated that Jimmy would slide to the doorway from the ground, so their aim was towards the upper part of the doorway, posing no threat to Jimmy.
Jimmy shot first, hitting a man in the chest, and then Ryan came over and fired a few more shots to finish it off. Ryan was standing and seeing that both men inside had fallen, he proceeded to kick their guns away; only then did Jimmy stand up and step into the room.
"Nice shooting." Ryan gave Jimmy a thumbs-up, then aimed his gun at the adjacent room, went in to check, and Jimmy already confirmed there were no more people in the room, so he went directly to the two women. One was lying on the floor because her hands were tied behind her back so she couldn't stand up; she had rolled aside to not block the doorway. The other woman was sitting on the couch, her hands also tied behind her back.
"Clear." After checking that the room was safe and holstering his gun, Ryan walked over and they each started to untie one of the women. The one sitting on the couch was McCall. At that moment, both women were terrified. Though they weren't crying loudly, tears streamed down as they sobbed.
Jimmy, "Special Agent Jimmy, Ms. McCall, are you okay? Are you hurt? And you, ma'am, what's your name?"
McCall, shuddering with sobs and shaking her head, "I'm okay. Thank you."
The other girl said, "My name is Claire Rubinstein. May I make a call to my family?"
Jimmy, "Please wait a moment. We need to contact the headquarters first. It'll only take a moment."
Jimmy pulled Ryan aside, pointing to the kidnappers on the ground, "Ryan, go ahead and report up. Also, we need to arrange for an ambulance; they might still be saved."
The three suspects hadn't suffered fatal headshots; they were shot in the torso. If they were rushed to the hospital immediately, they might still have a chance. Waiting too long would complicate matters; just bleeding out could be fatal. Jimmy had not aimed to kill, opting for the Glock instead of a revolver, because he wasn't sure if either of the two women was their target, McCall. If they weren't, the kidnappers might still be useful.
Ryan nodded, another agent had come inside, and he picked up the phone to call Lars, then instructed another agent to contact the ambulance.
Ryan, "Lars, McCall has been rescued, and there's another kidnapping victim here; three kidnappers have been shot, waiting for an ambulance now."
Lars, "Are the people okay?"
Glancing at McCall, whose sobs had turned quieter and seemed much calmer, Ryan responded, "She's fine. Also, we need to check Claire Rubinstein, another kidnapping victim's name."
Lars, "Okay, if there's nothing else, you guys bring them back to headquarters directly after you handle the scene. We'll be heading back too."
Ryan, "Alright, we'll head back after we finish with the scene."
Ryan hung up the phone and, along with the others, began addressing the mess at the scene. First, they couldn't just leave them lying there; they had to check on them, attempt first aid where possible.
Jimmy looked at the other girl, Claire Rubinstein, pondered for a moment, then made a direct call to Chuck, "Chuck, what's the name of the kidnapee on your end?"
Chuck, "Claire Rubinstein, 21 years old."
Jimmy, "Did you receive a ransom call from the kidnappers?"
Chuck, "Yes, at 10 PM, Brooklyn's Prospect Park. What's up?"
Jimmy, "I think you can stand down everyone else. We're handling a kidnapping case and found another girl at the scene; her name is Claire."
Chuck, "Where are you? I'll come and find you."
Jimmy, "No need to come; head directly to the FBI office after we finish processing the scene here, and we'll bring the people back."
Chuck, "OK, thanks."
This mission was effective and even had an unexpected find. However, it was better to solve it together than to expend more manpower and end up with a tragic outcome. The presence of three armed kidnappers could have complicated things severely if something had gone wrong at the scene.
