Time reached 10 a.m., starting with the school authorities, then the city government, NYPD, and some other agencies' spokespersons spoke one by one, and of course, aside from the mayor's spokesperson who spoke quite a bit, everyone else's remarks were very brief, mainly expressing deep condolences for the deceased.
Afterward, Jimmy and the NYPD personnel, in a specifically cordoned off area next to the educational building, laid flowers and observed a moment of silence. Soon, the area was covered with various flowers, and several students who looked very sad were probably close friends of the two deceased students.
When the memorial service ended and the attendees dispersed, Jimmy greeted the NYPD people and then left. The press conference by the NYPD concerning the Dwight High School shooting was held at NYPD headquarters, not at the scene, so it was no longer related to Jimmy.
After changing his clothes at home, Jimmy had lunch out before returning to the office, effectively goofing off all morning.
Upon arriving at the office and turning on the TV for background noise, he continued to slack off, but then his good mood abruptly vanished. The news briefly covered the NYPD press conference and then showed the memorial service footage, where Jimmy noticed that his face was not blurred in the video. Fortunately, he never took off his sunglasses, though he clearly looked quite different from the NYPD uniformed group.
Thankfully, the news only briefly mentioned the memorial and ended without delving into the shooting incident in depth, which made Jimmy breathe a sigh of relief. After all, having the act of killing a suspect broadcasted was not good news, even though their Federation didn't require agents to keep their identities confidential, and agents had to show their badges while working on cases, Jimmy still didn't want the killing of the suspect to be publicized.
Perhaps subconsciously not wanting to become a public figure, the only interview Jimmy had accepted in recent years was when he was with the county police and had saved a person. Afterward, for various case interviews and police promotions, Jimmy always avoided them if possible, and if not, he'd just hide his face behind large sunglasses and finish up playing the part of a police officer.
Jimmy changed channels all afternoon, with most reports sharing a consistent perspective. It seemed that the NYPD's public relations department had indeed put in some effort to prevent the TV reporters from sensationalizing the story.
As Jimmy was idly watching various news channels, his phone suddenly rang, showing an unfamiliar number.
"Hi, is this Detective Jimmy Yang?" a man's voice came from the other side of the phone.
Jimmy: "Yes, who's this?"
"NYPD, Detective Chuck, we just met a few days ago."
Jimmy: "Oh, Detective Chuck, what's up? Did we find any leads on that last case?"
Chuck seemed frustrated by Jimmy's question, as that case had already been closed by Chris.
Chuck: "Oh, it's not about that case, it's a new one. Chris is currently unavailable and he gave me your number. Are you free right now?"
Jimmy frowned. Currently, he was the only one in their unit and, although bored, he wasn't free to leave just anytime.
Jimmy: "Is it urgent?"
Chuck: "Yes."
Jimmy: "Sorry, due to some inconveniences, I can't leave right now. If it's okay with you, could you come to Federal Square?"
After considering for a moment, Chuck said: "Alright, please wait a bit."
Towards the end of the workday, Chuck finally arrived at the office with the female officer Nia Miller, and Jimmy received them in his office where Nia handed him a folder.
As Jimmy opened the folder, Chuck started to explain the cases: "These are two murder cases. The first one involves a plastic surgeon who was shot in his living room a week ago. The scene was handled very cleanly, and we didn't find any clues left by the shooter; the second case was yesterday, a cab driver was found dead inside his cab, which was parked in an alley. Due to it being a cab, too many fingerprints were left on it, making them not valuable for extraction. The folder contains photos from the scenes."
Jimmy nodded as he looked through the photos. In the first case, the surgeon was shot in the living room, with bullet wounds to the chest and head, the report showed he was hit with three bullets, while the cab driver in the second case was more straightforward with a single shot to the head, but the angle was from the right rear side, indicating the shooter was likely sitting in the right rear passenger seat of the cab.
Jimmy: "Please continue."
Chuck: "We investigated the personal relationships of both victims and the surveillance around the sites of death. They had no connections whatsoever, but we found the same person in street surveillance footage, in different disguises, but with the same features, whose screenshots are included at the back of the file. Their gender is unknown, they have long hair, wear a soft hat, and from surveillance, their face shape and height of 175-180 cm were noted, carrying a guitar case. This individual appeared in the timeframes for both cases, dressed differently but always with that guitar case. According to the physique and stride, we're quite sure it's the same person. Also, the long hair over the shoulders is another clue."
Jimmy's frown deepened as he looked at the surveillance video screenshots; they were too unclear. If he were frank, in a megacity like New York, isn't it about time to upgrade the cameras? The quality was really too poor for any substantial critique, and even if the person appeared directly in front of the camera, only their rough facial contours were visible. He asked: "Do you have the original video files?"
Nia took out a laptop from her bag, turned it on, and played two segments of the surveillance videos. Alright, it wasn't their screenshot capability that was problematic, but rather that the crimes occurred at night, and the already unclear surveillance compounded by the dim environment indeed made it hard to discern facial features.
