North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 406: Casual days begin at 326

Jimmy finally got a long-awaited vacation, but of course, a good chunk of the first day was taken up by the psychologist, mainly due to the excessively long wait time. Then Jimmy ran into a rather unfortunate issue—the administrative leave he was granted for the second day turned out to be a Saturday. Isn't that just a regular weekend? So, the administrative leave is just one day plus a regular weekend off?

Actually, after starting his job, Jimmy's daily routine became a complete mess. Monday through Friday, Saturday and Sunday, these didn't really fall within his concerns at all, because he was either on leave or working overtime. The chance to have a steady five-day workweek followed by two days off was so rare that when Hughes arranged the administrative leave, Jimmy didn't even realize it.

In terms of the administrative leave, there wasn't much to discuss regarding Jimmy's responsibility in the case. That unfortunate shooter was causing a campus shooting incident—who else but him deserved to die? The difference between Jimmy firing and the ESU doing so was that Jimmy could deliberately control the timing of the shot, avoiding the students behind and preventing collateral damage, whereas the ESU might not consider such situations. Prosecutors' inquiries regarding Jimmy were quickly addressed, and the prosecutor's office's review wouldn't be too troublesome, just that it would take a quite a bit of time. It wasn't feasible to let Jimmy continue his leave indefinitely; a gesture was enough.

In recent times, Jimmy had been going out quite a lot. With a rare weekend to himself, he didn't plan to do much: clean up the house, run some errands, and that would be about it. Besides, he wanted to carefully examine the Crystal Ball given to him by Roland, which he referred to as the Black Rainbow in his letter—a pretty interesting name.

Jimmy held the Crystal Ball to the window and glanced at its shadow in the sun—pitch black. Although the Black Rainbow inside the Crystal Ball seemed to be unmoving and coated the interior, the shadow on the ground didn't reveal it at all; it looked like a solid iron ball, and just one glance towards the sun made his eyes dizzy.

Roland had been a bit too casual this time. His note said he couldn't find a way to enhance Jimmy's physique, so he sent over the Black Rainbow. It was meant to imply that it should be beneficial to Jimmy, perhaps enhancing some abilities or even the possibility of strengthening his physique. But, there were no instructions on how to use it.

Jimmy then used his Heart Eye Observation, but in that state, the Black Rainbow appeared simply as a solid sphere and didn't radiate anything from within like other abnormal items he'd seen before. In short, he had no idea how to use this thing now. Perhaps it needed to be smashed? But Jimmy didn't dare to act rashly; if it was damaged, whatever happened would be wholly unpredictable, and moreover, what if Roland contacted him later?

After much consideration, Jimmy eventually placed the Black Rainbow back in the safe. For now, that would have to suffice. He'd never used any esoteric objects before; who knew what could happen.

Jimmy also found a small box in the safe, which was a Cross Pendant given to him by Father Dallas Horton. Unfortunately, it was just the pendant without a chain. Jimmy thought it over and decided to check it out since he had nothing else to do. He would see where he could order a chain to mount the pendant.

Father Horton was a man of true skill, and the Cross Pendant he gave must have some special ability, though Jimmy didn't know what it was just yet. Typically, such pendants were meant to be worn as necklaces, perhaps for warding off evil or protecting the wearer. In any case, the time he spent with Father Horton was quite pleasant; he certainly wouldn't harm Jimmy.

After tidying up a bit and making himself a meal to rest, Jimmy took a casual look online for nearby jewelry shops. The next day, Sunday, he went to a very nice-looking jewelry store with the Cross Pendant in hand, only to learn upon inquiring that Cross Pendants were usually strung on leather straps, which this particular store just happened to be out of.

Well, it wasn't that they didn't want to do business, but upon learning that Jimmy had his own Cross Pendant that was a cherished gift from a priest, the designer implied it wasn't right to simply match such a precious gift with just anything. It would be best to get a leather strap custom-made, black or natural color would do.

It seemed this designer was a devout believer. Of course, one couldn't rule out that he might be a potential racist, unwilling to serve Jimmy the Asian Amercian.

Jmmy thanked the designer and left the jewelry store. When the topic of leather straps came up, he remembered a good place: the leather shop in Brooklyn where he had his custom gun holster made. He was confident they would have leather straps, and even if not, paying to have one made shouldn't be an issue.

Driving to the leather shop, everything went smoothly. The Mediterranean leather craftsman seemed to remember Jimmy. He asked Jimmy to show the gun holster and, observing its wear, told him that with such frequency of use, he estimated it would need replacing in a little over a year.

The main structure of the holster Jimmy used was fine, but the leather loops for the bullets might not last as long. When the time came, he would either need a complete replacement or else have to get the leather loops repaired. In any event, he'd have to come back, or he might face the risk of his bullets falling out.

Jimmy was rather philosophical about it; his underarm holster was indeed comfortable to use, and he was considering switching guns in the future, which would necessitate another custom-made holster.

He showed the Cross Pendant to the old leather craftsman and, after comparing it with the loop on the pendant, the craftsman said he had nothing ready to use but could make a leather strap for him. It would just take a day or two, as he hadn't finished his current work.
