Two people got into the car and immediately headed to Hell's Kitchen in the Clinton District, not far away.
Chris, "Last night, the NYPD had checked the surrounding traffic cameras and confirmed that two gunmen had entered the Clinton District. They started searching the area early in the morning and confirmed the gunmen had entered an apartment building."
Jimmy, "Two? I remember the news yesterday saying there were at least three gunmen fighting, what about the other one?"
Chris, "Dead, on a street next to Times Square. He took five shots, and the fatal one hit his chest, piercing his heart."
Jimmy, "Was his identity investigated?"
Chris, "No identity information, fingerprints were wiped off, and no documents were found on him. This isn't a simple shooting case, you need to be mentally prepared, this case could be troublesome."
Jimmy nodded. The car stopped at the base of an apartment building where two police cars were already parked, and four NYPD officers were waiting for them downstairs.
Chris, "Are you sure the gunmen entered this apartment building?"
An officer nodded, "Confirmed, two gunmen, wearing dark down jackets, dark pants, and shoes, gloves and hats. The surveillance footage didn't capture their faces, but an elderly resident from the opposite apartment mentioned seeing people dressed like that entering this building in the early morning."
Chris, "Have you investigated inside?"
The police shook their heads, "We are waiting for backup."
Chris, "Enter when the backup has arrived. Give me the surveillance footage." He took two printed papers from an officer's hand, which showed figures captured by traffic cameras; unfortunately, only the clothes were visible, not the faces.
Chris turned to Jimmy, "Let's go in first."
Jimmy nodded, his Heart Eye already activated as he scanned the apartment. It was a five-story building with many rooms, and since it was Christmas Day, most apartments were occupied.
The stairs of the apartment were in the middle, Chris stood at the staircase looking up, but instead of going straight up, he started making door-to-door inquiries starting from the first floor.
Chris and Jimmy stood to the left and right outside an apartment door, "Knock, knock."
"Is anyone there?"
"Who is it?"
"FBI, please open the door."
The door cracked open slightly, the chain lock still latching, a woman peered out, and Chris showed his identification.
Chris, "FBI Special Agent Chris, is there anyone else at home with you?"
The woman, "Just me and the children, what's this about?"
"We are investigating a shooting case, have you seen these two men?" Chris showed her the printouts of the surveillance footage, but the woman shook her head.
"Thank you, please keep your door locked and avoid going out for now." The woman vigorously nodded, closed the door, and the sound of it locking could be heard from inside.
Jimmy didn't signal any danger to Chris because he had already seen through the apartment; there was a child who seemed only a few years old inside and no other adults, so naturally, the gunmen could not be in this apartment. Chris continued to the next apartment.
Jimmy looked towards the other apartments. Since Chris had already announced himself as FBI, and he had lived in such apartments himself, he knew the soundproofing was poor. Theoretically, the people in the nearby rooms should have heard their conversation.
Everything seemed normal, and they quickly finished questioning in several rooms on the first floor. By that time, the police outside had started entering the building as reinforcements had arrived. Following Chris's instructions, several officers began to search the second floor while Chris and Jimmy headed to the third floor.
The NYPD's knocking and loud shouts downstairs had already alerted the people on the third floor. A few of them opened their doors and peered outside. Chris flashed his badge and announced, "FBI, we're investigating a case, please everyone go back to your rooms."
Well, that shout sent everyone in the hallway back into their rooms. Then Jimmy noticed at least three rooms where people seemed panicked. This floor seemed to harbor more than just the two gunmen.
Jimmy immediately drew his Glock while Chris continued knocking on doors. As they were questioning the first room, a door at the other end suddenly burst open. A man ran out, took two quick steps to the stairs, and leaped over them, demonstrating impressive agility.
"Don't move, FBI!" Jimmy swung his gun toward the man, who had just descended the stairs, and quickly ran after him.
Poor guy, between Jimmy and Chris on the third floor and several other officers on the second floor and downstairs, the man who jumped over the stairs was caught by the police just as he reached the second floor.
Jimmy turned his attention away from him, looking toward the other rooms. Someone was pouring something down the toilet, and in another room, two people, one in front and the other behind, stood in the living room holding handguns.
As for the other rooms, they seemed to be fine.
Jimmy kept his eyes on the room with the two gunmen. He and Chris quickly reached the door of that room. After knocking, the door was opened slightly, and a man inside greeted Chris with a smile.
Jimmy called to Chris softly and pointed to something at an angle that wasn't visible from the door; Chris took a glance, noticed black shoes and pants, and immediately sidled up against the wall by the door.
The man inside reacted quickly. As Chris moved, he had already raised his right hand, which he'd hidden behind his back, holding a handgun aimed at Chris.
Jimmy was prepared in advance, so he had already fired his gun as the gunman raised his weapon, shooting through the wooden door hitting him, causing him to release the doorknob and stagger backward against the wall. The other gunman inside the room saw this and began shooting at the door, but lacking a clear line of sight, his bullets posed no threat to Jimmy and Chris.
"Shots fired on the third floor." Hearing the gunfire, the officers downstairs started moving to ascend, while one contacted reinforcements through the radio.
Jimmy glanced back to see Chris unhurt and then shouted toward the staircase, "I need a shield!"
The apartment door was fitted with a security chain; normal kicks would usually do, but with gunmen inside, directly breaking in was too dangerous without a shield.
Jimmy watched the gunmen inside. The one who had been shot was down but still moving; Jimmy had hit his chest, not aiming for the head, so he wasn't going to die immediately.
The other gunman was squatting next to him, gun in right hand aimed at the door, left hand checking on his condition.
Soon after, a police officer arrived with a bullet-proof shield from the car. Jimmy followed behind the officer and kicked at the door. The security chain didn't give way. The gunman inside fired first, but with the shield, it wasn't a big problem. After another couple of kicks, the door opened. Jimmy and the officer in front both crouched to minimize their exposure, while the gunman ducked into the next room.
Jimmy kicked the handgun away from the gunman on the floor to ensure safety, then Chris and the others arrived and secured the wounded gunman. Jimmy patted the shoulder of the officer with the shield, and they advanced, pressing up against the bedroom door.
"Drop your weapons, drop your weapons now!" Jimmy shouted a few times, only to be met with a few shots from the gunman at the shield, walls, and floor before he finally gave in, pointed the gun at his own head, and pulled the trigger.
"FxxK, what the hell is all this? Call an ambulance."
Seeing the gunman in the bedroom commit suicide, Jimmy was a bit shaken. This was the third time he had seen a gunman take his own life when cornered. What was wrong with these people? Getting caught would just mean an investigation and possibly a few more years in prison, why go to such lengths?
Jimmy holstered his gun, cursing under his breath. Chris, watching from behind, was somewhat speechless and patted Jimmy before calling the investigators to the scene.
As for the other officers, apart from two who stayed to secure the scene, the rest continued searching the other rooms.
