North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 333: Investigate Jimmy?

After parking the police car, Jimmy and his team moved the box into the evidence room at the police station for temporary storage. Identifying such an object was beyond the capability of a few police officers; it required contacting a museum or a school laboratory for processing.

Having been somewhat frightened, none of them went home for dinner. Instead, they all headed to a restaurant. To express his apologies for the unsettling incident, Jimmy voluntarily picked up the tab. The reason the three officers were startled was due to Jimmy inexplicably firing his gun.

In the afternoon, after returning to the station, the satellite photos Ray had ordered also arrived. They were delivered by a motorcycle-riding officer once again, and it was unclear just how many favors Ray had to call in for the emergency delivery. Making the trip twice in two days—this was police work, not courier service.

While Chad and his team handled the box, Jimmy spread the satellite photos out on the table. There were only photos from January and July. The January photos didn't offer much reference value due to severe color variations in winter between vegetation and buildings. However, the July photos were much more telling.

From the satellite photos, it was apparent that the color of the forest differed from other areas. Jimmy scrutinized the colors of the forest; it seemed that only about half of the forest to the north had a slightly darker shade. Due to the scale of the satellite images, it was impossible to discern a clear color boundary or outline the center of the circle.

Compared to the aerial photos from yesterday, the forest colors were consistent, and the color variation had expanded to a more southern location. Could it be assumed that this color change occurred in just a few short months?

Based on the aerial photos from yesterday and Jimmy's deduction, the epicenter of the supernatural outbreak should be around the bend of the Red River. Yet, the source of the eerie threads found turned out to be the underground metal box in the forest. Was there any connection between these two locations?

The fog today arose from the Red River, and judging by the path of the fog, its target must have been the box they had opened. Perhaps the supernatural occurrences in the Red River were related to the box in the forest?

Jimmy sat down, leaning back in his chair as he pondered the fog he had encountered at noon. He was now certain that his attack had been effective, though not particularly noticeable. The white dots seen through 'Heart Eye' must be the weak points of the supernatural. After he hit one of these points, part of the fog indeed dissipated.

But it seemed that the fog didn't possess any potent abilities, nor did it move quickly. If this was the extent of the supernatural event, he should be able to handle it easily.

Actually, there was another possibility. The fog's target was the box, and it might not have intended to deal with Jimmy at all. What if it had been suppressed by the sunlight during the day? Looking at it this way, it seemed they could only act during the daylight hours.

Checking the time, he realized it was no longer feasible to head to the Red River for investigation. It would be evening by the time he arrived, so the visit would have to wait until tomorrow. However, he couldn't afford to waste the current moment; preparation was key for any situation, as the saying goes, "It's better to be safe than sorry," right?

He approached Chad, "Chad, could you help me find a set of diving gear?"

Chad looked puzzled, "What do you need diving equipment for?"

Jimmy replied, "I'm thinking of checking out the Red River tomorrow."

Chad blinked, considering the request, and then replied, "Okay, I'll see what I can do."

Jimmy thanked him, "Appreciate it. You guys continue to investigate the box; I'm heading out."

Watching Jimmy leave the office, Chad was quite confused. Since Jimmy's arrival, aside from conducting a few on-site investigations, his subsequent actions showed no clear connection, and his inexplicable shooting today only added to the mystery.

Speaking of Jimmy's shooting, Chad was still somewhat flustered. It was the first time he had witnessed someone firing a revolver with the rapid-fire capability of a semi-automatic handgun. Although Jimmy's back was turned to them and they couldn't see how fast he reloaded, the interval between each shot was enough to tell that Jimmy's reloading speed was beyond their imagination.

An FBI agent like that was not to be trifled with. If at all possible, it was best to stay as far away from him as possible. Thinking it over, he reached for the phone and redialed the FBI Dallas office.

Jimmy returned to the hotel, deciding to rest early. Having experienced two palpitations already, he didn't wait for the regular bedtime but instead went to sleep early to avoid being startled awake again.

In the middle of the night, Jimmy was awakened once more, but looking at the time, it was just past midnight. Something was off; why had he woken up two hours earlier?

He sat up, turned on the light, observed his surroundings using 'Heart Eye Observation,' then got dressed and left the room.

Jimmy drove towards Northern Town, but before he got far, he was taken aback. As he passed by the police station, he suddenly noticed threads in the air.

Jimmy turned around and entered the parking lot in front of the station. The lights were on inside, indicating that someone was on night duty. He approached the main entrance of the station and knocked on the door. Officer Hayden came from the right side of the lobby, hand on the holster and flashlight in the other, shining it over.

Hayden greeted, "Agent Jimmy, it's you."

Turning off the flashlight, Hayden opened the door to let Jimmy in, "Is something the matter?"

Jimmy responded, "Nothing much, just couldn't sleep. Thought I'd get some documents from the station to go over at the hotel."

Hayden nodded, "Sure, your documents are all on the table, untouched."

"Thanks," said Jimmy as he went over to the table to collect the photos and case files. Of course, he didn't neglect his surroundings; the threads floating around inside the station had indeed become denser. From their concentration, it appeared that the epicenter was likely the evidence room on the second floor.
