North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 330: Slow and steady wins the race.

Jimmy used his Heart Eye to recheck his surroundings and, after confirming it was safe, stood up to turn on the light, changed his clothes, put on his Bullet-Proof Vest, and prepared himself before opening the door. He looked left and right outside the motel, and just like yesterday, there was nothing unusual.

This time, he didn't plan to wait for daylight in his room. These nights of being jolted awake by sudden heart palpitations were too uncomfortable. Jimmy decided to scout the area from a distance first.

Based on the aerial photos he had obtained during the day, Jimmy had roughly marked out the areas where the plant colors were different. If these greener plants were influenced by paranormal phenomena, then the places that hadn't changed color should be outside the range of the anomaly. Theoretically, he shouldn't be affected if he was outside that area.

Jimmy turned back to his bed and took an M16 and two magazines out of his travel bag. With the revolver and bullets he already had on him, he felt emboldened.

He drove away from the motel and arrived at a dirt road on the north side of the town. There, Jimmy started observing the road surface and adjacent fields with his Heart Eye. He had already familiarized himself with the environment here; although there were woods nearby, there were no large animals, mainly small creatures like rabbits and foxes, which didn't worry him.

Despite the potential for paranormal cases, there had been no incidents of animals harming people before. Jimmy guessed that they might not have been infected by the paranormal.

As he approached the discolored location marked on the map, Jimmy parked the car and, opening his flashlight, started walking forward cautiously. Now he had to be careful. Although he didn't know why the plants showed different colors, he kept his Heart Eye fully operational to prevent any unexpected attacks by miscellaneous things.

Suddenly, Jimmy noticed an anomaly; the moonlight in front seemed to be affected. While it was still bright in the town, it became slightly dim when he arrived at the wilderness to the north.

Realizing something was wrong, Jimmy immediately retreated and ran back. Only when he was close to his car did the moonlight return to normal. Standing there and looking toward the north, Jimmy figured it should be here—the location affected by the paranormal. However, other than the moonlight's different brightness, Jimmy still didn't notice any other anomalies.

Unsure of the limits of his Heart Eye ability, Jimmy could only concentrate on observing carefully. After repeatedly scrutinizing the non-existent boundary, he finally detected faint, blurry threads drifting in the air through his Heart Eye. This must be the reason for the dimming of the moonlight. If he moved a little closer, he would enter the affected area, where the special forces had weakened the moonlight's penetration.

Jimmy found it tricky to deal with his first solo encounter with the supernatural. Although Roland had said he had the Flash Spirit Power, which Jimmy believed to be his Heart Eye Ability capable of dealing with paranormal events, he still felt very vulnerable.

Recalling the situation over the past few nights, it seemed that around 2 a.m., the paranormal forces would erupt, causing his heart to palpitate and waking him up. He hadn't felt anything during the daytime. Could it be inferred that the paranormal forces were suppressed during the day?

After pondering for a while, Jimmy placed a few clumps of earth by the side of the road at his current position as markers, then turned and got back into his car, returning to the motel to rest and wait to go out again during daylight.

At 9 a.m., due to his nighttime excursion, Jimmy unusually overslept. Picking up his cell phone, he saw a missed call from Ray. It seemed he had slept so soundly that he hadn't even heard the phone ring.

Jimmy redialed Ray, "Ray, sorry, overslept. Do you have the satellite images?"

Ray: "Yes, we've found the three most recent satellite images, all from this year. But they're not exactly over your coordinates. I've had someone process them. I reckon they should be ready around noon. You can pick up the fax at the Tata Police Station."

Jimmy: "Can someone bring them to me? Faxes distort the map a lot, and I need a clearer satellite image."

Ray: "Sure, I'll arrange that, but it'll probably be the afternoon before it arrives."

Jimmy: "A little later is fine, I can wait."

Jimmy hung up the phone, took care of some personal business, cleaned up, changed his clothes, and, with his equipment, drove off, heading directly to where he had parked the previous night. He stopped there, searching for the clumps of earth he had placed on the ground in the early hours.

After confirming his position, Jimmy activated his Heart Eye and started observing closely. After scouting around for a while, he couldn't find any trace of the thin, faint lines drifting in the air he had discovered in the early morning.

Could the paranormal conflict with the sun? Jimmy thought about it, then continued to drive forward slowly, paying careful attention to the threads he had observed in the air, as moving too fast might cause trouble if he plunged straight into it.

The sun was indeed powerful. Jimmy didn't find any signs of the threads all the way to the lake. He stopped the car and went to the site of the first case, but he encountered a problem: there was a tent and a car by the Red River.

Jimmy approached the tent, first making sure there were no people in the car, then noticing two figures inside the tent. He held his revolver in his right hand, concealing it behind him, and called out to the tent, "FBI. Anyone inside the tent?"

"Hey! Anyone there?" After waiting a moment and calling out a couple more times, someone inside finally responded.

"Who's out there?" A man's voice sounded.

Jimmy: "FBI. How many people are inside? Come out, please."
