When Jimmy arrived at the police station, Cage had already been there and had gone home to rest. He was now back, wearing casual clothes and pacing back and forth in the precinct lobby.
Jimmy: "Cage, stop walking in circles; won't you get dizzy?"
Upon seeing Jimmy, Cage immediately came over and grabbed his arm. "You just said the gunman had committed suicide? What happened?"
Jimmy: "I was on duty at the hospital tonight. The gunman walked by dressed as a doctor—I didn't recognize him at first. Then I suddenly realized that Officer Cherry was not at the door. Later I found the doctor coming out of the fire exit, heading to James's room. After the gunman fired, he started running, and after I chased him, he killed himself."
Cage looked at Jimmy. He knew Jimmy was strong, but he hadn't realized his investigative skills were also impressive. This case was largely resolved by Jimmy's efforts. He hadn't expected this kid to have grown this much.
Cage: "What about James?"
Jimmy: "He's fine; the gunman didn't even get into his room. Don't worry, I just came from the hospital. I need to stop by the FBI office, you should go rest. Oh, and the gunman's body has been sent to the coroner's office by the LRPD. Remember to get a copy of the autopsy report."
Cage: "I know, I'll head to the coroner's office early tomorrow morning to wait for the report."
Jimmy: "Suit yourself. This matter here is settled, and unless something unexpected happens, I might be going back and not returning; I'll just leave directly."
Cage hugged Jimmy. "Thanks, thanks, Jimmy. Goodbye."
Jimmy smiled at Cage, turned, and left the lobby to go to the parking lot and drive to the FBI office.
Harten had also gone home from work, but a call from Jimmy had him itching to return, so he drove back to the office, just like Cage.
But Harten did not wait in the lobby for Jimmy; he didn't know when Jimmy would arrive, so he went back to his own office.
Jimmy arrived at the FBI office to good news; some were still on duty, and most of the building was still brightly lit.
In fact, like other police, not all FBI agents are on 9 to 5 shifts with weekends off. Except for a few specialized teams, others still work in shifts to ensure 24-hour emergency response capability.
Previously in New York, due to the nature of the case, Peter's team worked regular hours, while Ruiz's team worked 24-hour shifts. As Jimmy was new there, he had the same hours as the section chief, Ruiz. So he worked regular hours while others weren't so lucky.
When Harten saw Jimmy, he stood up and asked, "What happened? How did the gunman suddenly appear and then commit suicide? Tell me about it."
Jimmy put his hand up and said, "Wait a minute. I've been busy all night, let me drink some water first."
Jimmy went with Harten to the break room. Since it was late, they didn't take coffee; Jimmy grabbed a water bottle, drank nearly half, and then began to describe how the gunman appeared, how he spotted him, and how the gunman died.
Harten wasn't as easily persuaded as Cage. After thinking for a moment, he asked, "How did you know the gunman would go there to assassinate James?"
Jimmy looked at Harten: "Think about it, if I wanted to kill someone and had already taken action, but that person was revived at the hospital and wouldn't leave for a while, I would definitely make my move at the hospital. I just made a simple judgment."
Harten shook his head: "It's not that certain; you just happened to be on duty at the hospital when the gunman appeared. Did you get any information from William?"
Jimmy hadn't expected Harten's first reaction to not be the end of the case, but to think about William. "No, just asked a few simple questions."
Harten: "I know you exchanged a few whispers, I won't ask you where you got your information, but I'd like to know exactly what William said that made you so sure the assassin would appear right away."
Jimmy: "William and I just talked a bit about James's case. Nothing else. Don't worry, he's still one of yours. I'm leaving as soon as this case ends."
Harten frowned and narrowed his eyes: "You're not being honest, Jimmy. I'm not prying for your source, but I hope you can share exactly what William said, as it affects how we wrap up this string of cases."
Jimmy sighed, "Let's wrap up James's case outright. The gunman killed himself after I chased him to the street. That conclusion should be enough. As for the information, all I can tell you is that it involves other complicated institutions, can't talk about it."
Harten turned and sat down on a chair in the break room. He didn't stop Jimmy anymore, but instead thought about what Jimmy's words really meant.
Seeing Harten deep in thought, Jimmy didn't hesitate to pull out the cabinet to find some snacks. He pulled out a few packets and started eating nonchalantly while sitting on the chair.
Harten: "You mentioned other institutions involved, ones that could complicate things for us. Federal?"
Jimmy nodded, then shook his head, continuing to eat his snacks. Harten was even more troubled now, Jimmy's gestures had given him a good idea of the situation. In the federal institutions, but not really a federal institution, and capable of such acts, it could only be that agency notorious for impersonating them.
Harten stood up: "Wait here for me for a minute."
Jimmy wasn't in a hurry. The case had reached a certain closure, and it was still late at night. A little waiting wouldn't hurt.
Minutes later, Harten returned. "Jimmy, let's go. We're heading back."
Jimmy looked at Harten, confirmed his words, and didn't say anything. He took an opened packet of snacks and left the office with Harten, "Harten, I'll see how things are tomorrow. If there's nothing else, I'll leave. I've just about used up a week's vacation; need to hurry back."
Harten: "Yeah, no more issues. We'll close the case just as you suggested. However, we can't let William and his lot go—they're still involved in a few previous cases. It's a good opportunity to settle everything."
Jimmy: "Yeah, whatever you think is best, go ahead. They are of no use anymore anyway."
Jimmy reached his car, watching as Harten also walked to his vehicle, started it, and drove out of the parking lot to return to the hotel for rest. Harten, on the other hand, drove out of the parking lot heading to the supervisor Pete's house, a route that Jimmy could not have guessed.
Back at the hotel parking lot, Jimmy sat in his car, took out his phone, and dialed Tom's number, which he had begun before heading back. He had remembered this matter while driving back—James was likely shot because of him, and since the case was resolved, it would spare Tom any further trouble.
