North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 318: 285 gunman appears_2

Now, James couldn't possibly go home, the only way to assassinate him was to enter the hospital and act directly. Jimmy was betting on whether he could detect the gunman's trace in time.

Jimmy had nothing to do with other matters, including those people at the repair shop; they were all Harten's prey now. Jimmy's current target was this gunman, Burke, and Watson, who was giving orders from behind, only needed to be handed over to Tom—that would suffice. They were from the same system, and they could definitely stir up some trouble. For Jimmy, an outsider, it was best to stay out of CIA internal affairs.

The only issue was that William had already been captured. Whether the gunman Burke could timely receive the information that James was still alive was uncertain. If Burke believed he had succeeded and ran away, then Jimmy would have completely lost his chance, as he and Lambert had requested leave for only one week.

In order to stay alert at night, now Jimmy needed to sleep early and rest. After waking up in the evening, he went out to grab something to eat and then rushed to the hospital. Jack, after his shift, didn't go straight home but waited here for Jimmy. Now both officers were guarding outside the ward, significantly increasing security.

Jimmy got the walkie-talkie from Jack, who could finally go home to rest after the handover. Replacing Jack was the newly recruited officer Williams Cherry, who Jimmy had met during his last visit.

Jimmy, "Cherry, what's the frequency we're using on the walkie-talkie? I'll adjust mine."

Jimmy confirmed the walkie-talkie frequency with Cherry, threaded the earpiece behind his head, and wore it on his right ear. Then he didn't stay at the entrance of the ward but went to the nurses' station next door, asked for a newspaper, and sat on the bench nearby to read the paper while observing the people around him.

Jimmy toured the floor periodically, several times throughout the night. He was quite familiar with the environment already, mainly looking for any new anomalies, whether people or equipment.

Watching too many movies has its drawbacks: there are too many hospital murder cases in films, with various methods—direct shooting, violent fights, drug injections, or even blowing up the hospital. There were just too many tactics, and he wasn't sure if anyone would recreate those classic scenes from the movies in the real world.

The nurses' station was busy, but after 11 PM, it basically quieted down, with staff just checking the rooms sporadically.

Jimmy had been sitting there for several hours, occasionally chatting with the nurses as a way to pass the time. The nurses' station received a phone call, and the two people inside left, leaving Jimmy alone. He picked up a magazine next to him and started flipping through it, suddenly feeling an abnormal silence.

Something wasn't right. Jimmy immediately looked around—the rooms were all normal. Perhaps he was being overly sensitive. He thought for a moment and continued flipping through the magazine.

"Ding," the sound from the nearby elevator. The two-meter-tall doctor he had seen during the day walked out with a folder. He went to the nurses' station, glanced over the materials there, picked up a file, and left the nurses' station, heading toward the ward area.

Since Jimmy had seen him before, he didn't pay much attention, only casting an extra glance because the doctor was heading in the direction of James's ward. Jimmy then lowered his head to look at the magazine.

"Thump," the sound of something hitting the floor. Jimmy looked over and immediately rose from the chair and ran over—Officer Cherry, who had been guarding James's door, was no longer in his position.

Jimmy's "Heart Eye" activated as he looked toward the ward, where James still lay on the bed, with no one else around. Thankfully, he glanced to the side and spotted a tall figure holding another person in the fire escape, right where Jimmy had chatted with Cage earlier. He had already scoped out the area beforehand.

Jimmy drew his revolver and took cover at the entrance of the adjacent ward. The tall doctor emerged alone from the fire escape. He looked left and right before approaching James's ward entrance, reached into his clothing with his right hand and twisted the doorknob with the left, opening the ward door to enter.

"FBI, freeze." Jimmy suddenly shouted. The tall doctor immediately spun around and fired a shot in Jimmy's direction. The object he'd reached for inside his clothing was indeed a gun. Unfortunately, Jimmy's "Heart Eye" didn't enable him to actually see through clothing like x-ray vision, or he would have shot first.

The doctor wielded a silenced pistol, and after firing one shot, he gave up entering the room and dashed towards the fire escape. Jimmy, who had previously taken cover in the adjacent ward, avoided the shot and emerged just in time to see the gunman reaching the fire escape door. He fired at the gunman, hitting him before he could enter the fire escape, but the bullet struck his back on the side, which wasn't fatal and didn't stop the gunman right away.

The gunman ran down the stairs of the fire escape, with Jimmy in hot pursuit. After opening the fire escape door, Jimmy first checked Cherry's carotid artery; it was still pulsing, he had probably just passed out. With Cherry out of danger, Jimmy didn't linger and chased down the stairs after the gunman.

In the confines of a staircase, the "Heart Eye" worked exceptionally well. Perhaps because of his tall stature, the doctor's movements became awkward while descending the stairs quickly. His unwieldy actions made him uncomfortable, causing him to occasionally hit the wall on turns.

Chasing from behind, Jimmy's speed was also fast, especially with his "x-ray vision," which spared him the fear of an ambush below, allowing him to dash down floor by floor swiftly.

When they reached the ground floor, the gunman collided with a wall, opened the emergency exit, and ran outside, with Jimmy right behind him. However, Jimmy perceived the gunman's deceleration and turn, and he executed a side dive to dodge the bullet. As he hit the ground, Jimmy also fired, guided by the white line aiming assist. Despite his awkward positioning, the shot was accurate as he waited for the white line to align with the gunman, ensuring the trajectory was correct at the time of discharge.

The gunman was caught off guard by Jimmy's accuracy while falling, and although he was only hit in the waist side, together with the previous shot to his back, he was now bleeding from two places. He continued running outside, his movements distorted, but his speed remained high.

The range of Jimmy's revolver was limited. By the time he got up, the gunman was already more than 30 meters away. While aiming and shooting could have been effective, it would have taken too much time. He didn't stop to aim but continued his chase instead.

Even with two bullets in him, the two-meter-tall gunman was remarkably fast. Despite Jimmy being in good physical condition and not weighed down by a heavy duty belt, he could only just keep pace without gaining ground—a frightening prospect indeed.

As he chased, Jimmy adjusted his radio to the public channel, pressed the call button, and announced, "Shots fired, shots fired, south of Church Hospital, one gunman, wearing a doctor's coat, 2 meters tall, nearby officers please assist in interception."

Jimmy was no longer with the county police, lacked his own call sign, and had no time to explain, so he simply broadcast his message, hoping someone nearby would hear. The dispatch center probably had a headache dealing with this. By the time they called back, police sirens could already be heard nearby.

Fortunately for Jimmy, there were officers close by who responded to the news of the shooting broadcast on the radio. Jimmy didn't reply but instead focused on picking up the pace to close the distance between himself and the gunman.

At the upcoming intersection, the gunman slowed down to turn a corner. Jimmy, anticipating this, raised his firearm and fired two shots, hitting with one while the other struck the wall of a house on the roadside. Running and gunning, hitting 50% of his targets was commendable.
