North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 281: 260 Death Comes

Jimmy prepared the equipment he needed for investigating clues and drove to Romany's mansion in Long Island. Traffic during the day was much worse than at night, and with frequent stops, it took him two hours to reach the vicinity of the seaside mansion.

Jimmy did not plan to drive there, so he packed all his equipment into a briefcase, locked the car, and walked to Romany's mansion.

As he approached the door, Jimmy suddenly stopped. His Heart Eye Observation revealed something eerie: two people were either lying or crouching in the living room, and beside the door in the room where two bodyguards had been the previous day, they too were now lying down.

It was after 3 p.m., too late in the day for everyone to be asleep, especially on the floor rather than on couches.

Something had happened, so Jimmy turned around and left the entrance of the mansion. He had carefully checked the entrance earlier; there were no protruding surveillance cameras. Surveillance cameras of that era were still quite bulky, and Jimmy was already familiar with their appearance from what was available on the market. The area was safe, with no images of him left behind.

Jimmy went back to his car, turned around, and left the seaside. After driving for a while, he still couldn't get over his concern about whether the people inside were dead or alive. He needed to check, but he couldn't go himself. Jimmy stopped the car on the roadside to think, restarted it, and began driving along the surrounding back roads.

The United States had a well-developed public telephone system, and coin-operated phones could be seen at various intersections and roadside locations. Jimmy found a nearby phone without surveillance and dialed 911. He claimed he couldn't contact his friend and asked if the police could check on him, then immediately hung up.

Such a help request would generally be useless to the average citizen, as Jimmy provided no personal information and made an anonymous call. There was a good chance that the dispatch center would not notify nearby patrol officers to check. But the address Jimmy provided was for a villa in a wealthy neighborhood on Long Island, and there was a high likelihood that the dispatch center would arrange for someone to investigate — such was the power of money.

Jimmy turned around and returned, parking the car at a distance from Romany's mansion. From there, he could observe the front of the mansion from afar and would definitely see if a police car arrived.

Minutes later, a police car arrived and stopped in front of Romany's mansion. Two patrol officers got out, walked to the door, and knocked.

Jimmy watched and shook his head; the police here were too complacent. The two officers didn't stand beside the door to knock but directly in front. If someone inside were to shoot, both officers would be in trouble. He didn't know if they were less vigilant because they were in a wealthy area or if they were always this careless.

When there was no response to the knocking, the two officers split up and looked inside the house from the side windows. Then, one officer reached for his radio to speak.

Jimmy could only guess what they were doing based on their actions, as he was too far away to hear anything.

The police officers signaled to each other and returned to the door, trying to kick it open, but unfortunately, they failed. One officer stayed at the front door while the other went around to the back of the mansion, apparently looking for another entrance.

Jimmy checked his watch and started timing. Five minutes later, two more police cars arrived with sirens blaring. Jimmy watched them enviously; back when he was in Small Rock City, he never had this many police available for backup. Money was truly powerful.

With the additional police cars arriving, the officers finally broke through the front door and entered the mansion. Jimmy observed from a distance without leaving or getting involved. Soon, more vehicles arrived, including several ambulances. However, it seemed likely a grim outcome, as the people carried out on stretchers were all covered with white sheets, clearly declared dead at the scene and ready to be taken for autopsies.

Jimmy picked up a spare phone and called Justin, "Romany might be in trouble. When I arrived, I saw police checking out the mansion. Ambulances just took people away, not sure about the situation now."

Justin asked, "Can you investigate?"

Jimmy replied, "No, if the case isn't reported to the FBI, I don't have access, and I'm still a probationary agent. The case won't be assigned to me, and investigating could mess things up. See if someone else can verify the information and let me know. The responding officers are from Suffolk County Police. I'm heading back now; it's not my time to get involved."

"Understood. Goodbye."

Long Island is a northeast-southwest oriented elongated island with four counties. Kings County (Brooklyn) and Queens County (Queens) in the west are part of the five boroughs (counties) within New York City, while Nassau County and Suffolk County in the center and east are among the 62 counties in New York State. They are not part of New York City but belong to the New York metropolitan area, with Romany's mansion located within Suffolk County.

Jimmy hung up the phone, started the car, and headed back. By the time he reached Manhattan, it was already dark. Jimmy parked the car in a nearby parking lot. The situation was still unclear, and he might need the car again; it wasn't time to return it yet.

Jimmy, carrying his briefcase, went to have dinner and then headed home to rest. Today's trip had been a waste; this side job might result in a loss. It was likely that Romany was already dead, and the necklace theft case would end unresolved. After a full day of running back and forth and borrowing Jones's reagents, preparing so much only to find the victim dead felt like punching cotton—a slight strain on his back.

Although the case might be gone, Jimmy couldn't fully relax. This was his suspected second encounter with a supernatural event. While reason urged him to stay away from danger, his curiosity about the smoke he saw with his Heart Eye kept nagging at him, making him want to investigate and understand further.

Jimmy possessed a unique gift, the Heart Eye, which initially made him feel chosen. After meeting Roland, he was certain that supernatural events occurred in this world, and he was not the only special one.

The exorcism ceremony in the Small Rock City church allowed him to see what they called a demon for the first time. Also, Priest Royte informed him of a group of special people capturing demons in another dimension and handing them over for exorcism.

Having been in this world for over two years, this might be his second chance to witness a demon for a long time. If he missed it, he didn't know when the next would be. Although it was dangerous, he genuinely felt the urge to make contact, to see and understand the other side of this world.
