North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 271: Target Confirmation

Frank's situation was complicated, and Jimmy couldn't be bothered to ask who the other bald guy was. It didn't concern him, and as a somewhat involved acquaintance, he had done his duty by issuing a warning.

Jimmy stopped worrying about Frank's issues, went home to rest, and when he returned to the office the next day, Ruiz had already arrived early.

Jimmy, "Hey, Ruiz, you're here early today."

Ruiz, "Yeah, Jimmy, I'm planning to head to the site this morning. That Reina we talked about last night has been found; the surveillance team is in place already."

Jimmy smiled, "That was quick. Where is he?"

Ruiz, "Also in the Bronx, in a hotel. We'll head over once the morning's business is dealt with."

"Okay." Jimmy turned and returned to his desk, which still had the files on the Russian mafia that he was viewing yesterday. After yesterday's events, Jimmy suddenly lost interest in reading their information. The current situation with the Trasov family was not something the FBI could handle; reading these files seemed pointless.

Jimmy picked up the files and walked to the file cabinet, pulling out files on Chinese gangs instead, focusing on the struggles between the Ghost Shadow Gang and the Flying Dragon Gang in the '90s, and the FBI's operations against them.

"Jimmy, let's go."

Jimmy returned to his desk, just placed the files on it, and Ruiz was already leaving the office. "Jimmy, let's go."

Jimmy, without tidying up his desk, grabbed his coat and followed Ruiz out the door.

The ride was silent. Jimmy followed Ruiz to a hotel. The previous surveillance car was too dirty, and now a cleaner van was parked next to the hotel, matching the one Jones had. It seemed the FBI had standard modifications for their vehicles; if the gangs were attentive, they should be able to distinguish them.

They entered the van, and Ruiz first inquired about the target. The surveillance personnel said, "Target Reina has been confirmed to still be in the hotel, room 312. But we couldn't install surveillance equipment inside, we only have two visuals from the hotel's own surveillance, one inside the elevator and another at the entrance."

Ruiz, "When did he go in? How many people?"

The surveillance staff looked at a notebook next to them, "He returned to the hotel around 1 AM today and hasn't come out since. So far, no contact with others has been observed."

Ruiz, "What about his phone?"

Surveillance personnel, "We couldn't get the number."

Ruiz, "Keep monitoring then."

Ruiz sat next to a computer and began reviewing earlier recorded footage.

Jimmy sat to the side and rested. He took out his Glock and revolver for another check; being idle was no excuse not to ensure his weapons were in working order.

"Target spotted, in the elevator."

Jimmy leaned in too, watching the surveillance feed. Reina was alone in the elevator, heading downstairs.

Ruiz, "I'll keep an eye on the monitor. Who's driving?"

A member of the surveillance team directly moved towards the driver's seat. Reina was no longer visible in the elevator, so now they could only monitor the entrance. Soon, Reina appeared at the front door. Instead of hailing a cab, he walked straight to the right. The surveillance van turned accordingly, the external hidden camera maintained focus on Reina's position.

"This doesn't look like he's going out for errands, unless his destination is right next to the hotel."

Ruiz muttered to himself while monitoring and glanced at the clock, "No need to follow too closely; he might just be going out for lunch. It's now 11:20 AM."

The surveillance van stopped at the roadside, keeping an eye on Reina from a distance without getting too close.

After a ten-minute walk, Reina entered a restaurant. Ruiz immediately stood up. "Give me a bug."

The surveillance personnel handed Ruiz a black bug, which he pocketed, then said to Jimmy, "Jimmy, wait here. I'll go inside and check."

Jimmy nodded, giving Ruiz space to disembark. Ruiz, clearly experienced at this kind of surveillance, adjusted his suit and hair as he walked, looking just like any business man by the time he reached the restaurant.

When Jimmy saw Ruiz enter the restaurant, he asked the surveillance staff, "Is the bug working?"

"It's working; you can hear the sounds inside the restaurant."

Jimmy sat by the computer and picked up another listening device. Truthfully, the noise inside the bug was cluttered, and it was hard to distinguish specific voices given how many people were near Ruiz. It all depended on whether Ruiz could manage to place the bug on Reina.

After a while, Ruiz came back towards the surveillance van. The sound in the earpiece indicated the bug was still on Ruiz; it seemed there was no chance to plant it.

Ruiz, "Damn, Reina is situated at the far inside; there's only an empty table there, I couldn't get closer. Let's continue tracking."

In the afternoon, Reina left the restaurant and hailed a taxi at the restaurant entrance. The surveillance van followed from a distance until they reached an old-looking building.

Reina got off the taxi and entered the building.

The surveillance van stopped, and Ruiz, looking at the building, asked the nearby surveillance personnel, "Can we use the equipment to hear inside?"

"No, our directional amplifier doesn't work on this type of building. To hear what's inside, we need to install bugs and surveillance probes."

Ruiz thought for a moment, then said, "Let's try."

The driver walked back to the van, pulled some equipment from a box, "I'll see if there's a chance to install it."

The driver opened the driver's door and got out of the car. The surveillance personnel weren't dressed in suits like Ruiz; wearing everyday clothes, they weren't too conspicuous on the street.

"There's sound now. No one at the door, he's trying to move inside."

The surveillance personnel inside the van relayed the sounds from the bug to Jimmy and Ruiz, "Fxxk, he's been spotted, they caught him."

Ruiz quickly put on his earpiece to listen in on the situation inside.

"Sounds like they are beating him, boss! Do something!"

Ruiz loudly cried out, "Call for backup." The nearby surveillance personnel immediately picked up the phone to dial.

Jimmy patted Ruiz on the back, "Ruiz, I'll do some recon. If there aren't many people inside, I'll go straight in for the rescue."

Ruiz turned to look at Jimmy, "Are you sure you can manage?"

Jimmy nodded, "Don't worry, I'll be careful. At the very least, I can confirm how many are inside. Keep the call running."

Jimmy took out his phone, dialed Ruiz's number, then pocketed it. He pulled out his Glock and ran towards the building from the van.
