North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 254: Agent 233 shot

Jones and Jimmy returned to Federal Square late at night, and as expected, everyone was working overtime today. Allen's interrogation was still being conducted in the conference room, with Peter questioning, Diana taking notes, Jones handling surveillance video and audio recordings from wiretaps, leaving Jimmy with no choice but to sit in a chair and space out.

Rookies have no rights, huh, even a spot to observe the interrogation process would have sufficed. Jimmy idly swiveled in his office chair, feeling incredibly frustrated.

Jimmy's eyes were fixed on the conference room. The transparent glass may block out sound, but at least he could see the activity inside.

Allen's interrogation went on for more than 20 minutes. Afterward, Peter came out and summoned an agent to take Allen away—probably to the detention center for temporary custody, and then brought in the buyer.

The buyer seemed cooperative, leaving just a few minutes after entering, though going home was out of the question—they were also escorted to the detention center for a while.

Peter picked up Diana's written interrogation records and began to review them when he suddenly took out his phone from his pocket, continued to read the records while answering a call.

Peter opened the door of the conference room, "Jimmy, Jones, immediately head to the Bronx; an agent's been shot, and the suspect's trying to run."

Diana didn't even have time to organize the interrogation records, leaving them on the conference table as she followed Peter downstairs. The team of four reached the elevator, ready to descend.

Jimmy, "Peter, what happened?"

Peter, "The surveillance team called in. Looks like the suspect found their surveillance van, they came downstairs, and shots were fired straight at their van. Then the suspect took off in a car parked on the street. FXXK!"

Peter didn't say more, starting to make calls in the elevator, "Ruiz, your suspect may have surfaced. Our surveillance team was shot at while monitoring, and now the suspect has driven away."

"Yeah, I'm on my way to the scene now, Bronx, Alton. OK."

Peter made another call: "Hughes, our surveillance team was shot at, the suspect has fled. I've informed Ruiz to investigate the suspect, and I need to apply for a search warrant. OK."

Peter hung up the phone and told the others, "Jones, you take Jimmy to the scene first. Dian, you come with me to apply for the search warrant."

Jones drove the FBI-issued vehicle with Jimmy still heading towards the Bronx. Today had mostly been spent on various vehicles.

Jones was indeed pitiable, paired with Jimmy, a rookie unfamiliar with New York. This led to several hours of driving that day, on top of the daylight surveillance without much rest. At this late hour, he was really exhausted, but he couldn't trust Jimmy to drive either, especially when it came to choosing routes. Jimmy wasn't up to par.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Jimmy began to sort out his weapons. It was one of Jimmy's habits; if there might be a shootout soon, he might as well use the time to get guns and ammunition ready.

However, Jimmy was overthinking. By the time Jones drove to Alton, NYPD had already cordoned off the scene because a shootout had taken place, and someone had called the police. When the cops arrived, the FBI's surveillance team had already left for the hospital in their car, with only one agent left waiting for the rest. NYPD, following the request of the FBI agent, had sealed off the area and the residential building due to the shootout.

Jones parked outside the police cordon, and Jimmy got out of the car, showed his badge to the police saying "FBI," and then entered the shootout scene.

Jones followed in, "White, how's your team doing?" Jones communicated with the FBI agents left at the scene.

White replied, "They're all right now; the hospital just called. The suspect started shooting at the car right after they went downstairs. They must have noticed our surveillance vehicle from upstairs."

Jones asked, "How many people? And who's following them closely now?"

White said, "Three people, they took a sedan. Each one only carried a bag, and Ruiz has already arranged for pursuit."

Jones patted White on the arm, walked over to Jimmy, and asked for a cigarette. The two stood there, enveloping themselves in smoke as they waited for Peter to get the search warrant so they could proceed with the search.

After half an hour, Peter and Diana arrived, accompanied by a team of forensic colleagues. Jimmy and Jones greeted Peter's group and then headed straight for the 5th floor.

Upon forcefully opening the front door, the first thing they saw were two large boxes in the living room. After the forensic staff took photos, they opened the boxes to find an assortment of large and small statues and stones, many of which could not be identified at a glance; some looked like random rocks.

These were repacked, and the forensics team busied themselves, while Peter and his colleagues started searching every corner of the room for anything the suspects might have left behind.

Jimmy had already scanned the area. There were no safes in the walls or anything of that sort, so it seemed they were only dealing with the items in front of them. Behind the couch were two backpacks containing some clothes, two handguns, several magazines, and scattered bullets. The rest was just normal room furniture.

Peter checked the room for evidence and took out his phone to call Ruiz.

"Ruiz, how are things on your end? Need any help?"

"OK."

After hanging up, Peter called out to Jones and Jimmy, "Jones, Jimmy, come with me to support Ruiz. They've intercepted the suspects near New York Botanic Garden. NYPD has them surrounded."

Diana asked, "What about me?"

Peter instructed, "You stick with the forensic team. After you get back, start organizing the interrogation records from earlier—today's going to be very busy."

Diana nodded and turned to watch the forensics team organize the evidence.

Peter, along with two others, went downstairs and drove to the botanic garden. This time, Jimmy switched places, riding with Peter. As they drove, Peter briefed them on the situation: after the three suspects fired shots, someone called the police, and the NYPD dispatched nearby patrol cars to pursue their sedan. As the largest police organization in the U.S., the NYPD has a substantial number of officers in each borough of New York.

The suspects weaved through streets, trying to shake off the police cars. Once the FBI reported that their agents were the ones shot, NYPD support helicopters were also launched. Escaping the pursuit of both helicopters and police cars within the city is very difficult; eventually, near the New York Botanic Garden in Fordham, the suspects were intercepted. After that, they fled into an adjacent residential building for cover. Now, the police and FBI had blockaded the entire building.
