In this situation, Jimmy couldn't drag Julia to their surveillance van, so he had to stand guard with his gun. He wasn't sure if there were other hidden gunmen around, so he had to hold his ground like this.
Fortunately, 911 was quite efficient, and with the large number of NYPD officers, the sound of sirens soon filled the air as patrol officers returned to clean up.
Every police car came equipped with a first-aid kit. After Jimmy showed his identification, the patrol officers came over to assist him in providing temporary hemorrhage control for Julia. After a few minutes, a fire truck arrived, and the paramedics took over Julia and Jones.
Jones was also lucky; though he had been shot, the bullet hadn't claimed his life. The most dangerous one hit his face, passing through the cheek without hitting his brain, which was fortunate, though his face would certainly be scarred.
The other gunshot wounds were to his right hand and shoulder. He was likely hit while returning fire. As for why he lost consciousness, it's possible he hit his head on the ground when he fell after being shot, as there was no gunshot wound indicating he would have passed out immediately.
"Fuxk! I forgot about Neil. Mahong, there should be one more living gunman; go have a look."
Watching as they were loaded into the fire truck, Jimmy suddenly remembered that Neil was still in the warehouse. Shouting, he sprinted towards it, while Mahong didn't follow him inside. Mahong was lucky, miraculously unscathed throughout the ordeal.
Jimmy headed to the warehouse, while Mahong checked on the three gunmen. This was a big mess. With Jimmy involved, they thought there'd be no problem, but the gunmen had appeared from behind them, catching everyone off guard. If Jimmy hadn't emerged from the warehouse to assist, facing three gunmen alone, nine times out of ten he'd be dead and none of them would have survived.
The gunman Jimmy had mentioned was confirmed still alive, though heavily bleeding. He'd need surgery and time to recuperate before interrogation. As for the other two, there was no hope; they had been shot in the head.
The situation in the warehouse was still unknown to him, but with Jimmy and Neil inside, there shouldn't be any issues.
When Jimmy arrived at the warehouse, only Neil was left holding a gun and hiding to the side. The middleman was already gone. Jimmy frowned but let it go. They owed the middleman for bringing them crucial information, so there was no point in pursuing it.
Jimmy: "Neil, are you okay? Are you hurt?"
Going through the motions, he asked the customary question, although he was certain he'd already killed all three suspects. As long as the middleman didn't stir up trouble, Neil would be safe.
Neil: "How's it outside? What about Mahong and Jones?"
Jimmy: "Jones and Julia were shot and have been sent to the hospital. Mahong is unharmed. Alright, once the backup arrives, help them examine these artworks."
Jimmy approached the three people on the ground, kicked their guns aside, and carried out a simple search. Then he walked over to Neil: "You didn't fire, and you didn't take off your gloves, right?"
Seeing Neil nod, Jimmy indicated the ground: "Just drop the gun on the floor."
No fingerprints, and they wouldn't need to mention Neil holding the gun, saving them some hassle.
After a while, several more ambulances and fire trucks arrived, and support agents from the FBI and the forensic team showed up. There were now enough personnel to handle everything here. All the artworks, around a dozen, were collected to be taken back for examination to determine if they were stolen, a process with numerous bureaucratic steps.
After dealing with everything there, Jimmy and Mahong headed to the hospital in Jimmy's private car. The support agents took the surveillance van they had come in back, which was riddled with bullet holes. In addition to forensic analysis, the tech department would also need to inspect the equipment inside, making for quite the headache.
As supervisors, Jimmy and Mahong were now essentially blind, with their subordinates all hospitalized from a single case. While the prognosis was good, there was no denying that poor Julia and Jones wouldn't be returning to work any time soon; they'd be resting at home for a while.
But there were positive outcomes. Apart from securing a living suspect, they recovered most of the stolen artwork. Now Mahong needed to track the movements of those killed in action to find their hideout, where the remaining artworks likely were.
The two officers in similar predicaments smoked outside the hospital, chatting about the robbers. Mahong believed they offloaded some artwork because transporting all of it out of New York quickly was impracticable. Otherwise, they wouldn't have asked for merely hundreds of thousands of US Dollars with just a day's completion limit.
It seemed like they had already planned their escape route. The artwork they couldn't carry was just excess baggage to maximize profit, indicating they had specific targets during the robbery. Once they secured those targets, the rest could be freely disposed of. However, eight pieces of artwork remained, leaving their actual target unknown.
If they could make that surviving suspect talk sooner, they might catch the other culprits.
After discussing the case with Jimmy, Mahong left the hospital, needing to arrange the follow-up investigation quickly, with Jimmy overseeing things there.
Ruiz soon called, and Jimmy updated him on what had happened today, especially about Julia and Jones's injuries. Their surgeries would take more time, but there shouldn't be any major problems. Both were expected to take significant time to recover, though their lives weren't in danger.
Ruiz had been besieged by bad luck since taking over as Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge. Suddenly increasing case numbers and more agents injured; previously, they didn't have many agents shot each year.
After understanding the situation, he instructed Jimmy to return to the office later and go over the case with Mahong. For now, Jimmy waited for news on their surgeries.
After ending the call, Jimmy thought for a moment, then rang Mark, who was still in Newark.
The Newark office's Riley was fuming. The person they caught surveilling them hadn't confessed anything and, under a lawyer's protection, managed to escape their control, only facing charges for speeding and fleeing from the police, which merely incurred minor fines, not enough for jail time.
However, Riley wasn't ready to give up yet. He arranged for a surveillance team to follow the monitor, leaving Mark unable to return, having to continue trailing for a while longer.
Jimmy updated him on Julia's injury. Mark could only inform Riley of the situation and prepare to return to New York, leaving this case for Riley to handle without New York's involvement for now.
Jimmy waited until both Julia and Jones finished their surgeries, only leaving after they awoke. They were lucky as their wounds weren't lethal, though Jones was more unfortunate, his head having hit the ground when he fell. Doctors suspected he might also have a concussion, making his recovery a bit more complicated than Julia's.
The surviving suspect was currently guarded by two support agents, and once he was well enough, Mahong would conduct interrogation. This incident had attracted much attention, ensuring processes would be expedited.
Back in the office, Jimmy and Mahong updated Ruiz on both sides of the case. None of today's deceased could be identified, as none had fingerprints in the system and image recognition didn't yield results, implying they were either special operatives from certain agencies or had entered illegally, else some trace would've existed.
Additionally, their actions suggested military backgrounds, leading Mahong to surmise they had military service experiences, making them far from ordinary.
