Only a few minutes into my early morning training, I froze. My body and mind were completely disconnected. I had just remembered something, and suddenly everything felt useless when I thought about why this was happening to me.
"Why? Why?" I began to shout as I let myself fall to the floor. I had obtained a Law of Space, yet that made my reward from the Fallen Hero's dungeon useless. "Was all that effort for nothing?" Staring at the ceiling, I kept thinking: I gained several levels, managed to advance my skills, and the cherry on top—I can't even eat it.
I clutched my head in frustration. "Did I waste my only reward on something useless?" That was my main thought. Just as I was on the verge of madness, I felt someone approaching my training room.
The person opened the door and saw me lying on the floor. "I was worried about you. I don't want you to anger the heralds by oversleeping." My grandmother walked up to where I was. "I was surprised not to see you in your room, so I came here." Since I didn't react, she just looked at me with that same strange expression.
"Have you finally gone completely insane?" Her question made me want to retort, but I couldn't, still stuck on the thought of a total waste. Less than a second later, several mana spheres struck my face, snapping me out of it. I sat up and began telling her what had happened.
"Congratulations on your new Law, little one. You've achieved something I never could." Her words were sincere. "Perhaps you spent all your luck obtaining it. Maybe that's the reason you wasted such a reward of that caliber." I could easily tell when my grandmother was serious or joking. This time, her jokes were meant to lift my spirits in such a grim moment.
"Do you think it was a waste, Grandma?" I asked, hoping for an answer. She had been my library all this time, always finding reliable information when I needed it.
"I don't know, I'm not sure." She paused for a moment. "I never had the opportunity to enter a dungeon of that kind. Only very influential people have even the slightest chance." Hearing her answer, I buried my head between my knees.
"Don't be discouraged. You're lucky to have met two people I'm 90% sure have stepped inside a Fallen Hero's dungeon." Who? Which two people? My parents?
"Really? Who? I need to ask them to put an end to this torment." If it was them, they could help me at least a little.
"I'm talking about the heralds." Them? Well, that makes sense. Both are people completely trusted by the Marquis; surely they had the opportunity to train in a dungeon of that caliber.
"Is it wise to trust them? I've only known them for a few hours…" I was afraid of revealing my secrets only for it to backfire.
"You could say yes, little one. Your grandfather told me years ago something about them. The heralds have a contract with the one they serve. They are bound and completely loyal to the Marquis Timal in this case." How did my grandfather know that? …That's true, we almost never talk about him. I've always avoided the subject because my family never took the first step.
"The Marquis holds you in very high esteem for many reasons. He's someone you can trust." Then by extension, I could trust them too. I should ask them later.
"Thank you, Grandma, you're always there to help me." I gave her a strong hug as a smile formed on my face. Not all was lost; I still had a chance.
"As long as I live, I will be a support for our family, little one." Her words surprised me a bit. She looked healthy and strong; she shouldn't die anytime soon… though in this world, anything could happen.
"As long as I live, I'll do everything possible to make sure everyone lives as long as they can." My words were sincere. One of the reasons I strive to be strong is my family—they are one of my motivations to keep training.
I said goodbye to her and left to meet the heralds. She would inform my parents about my absence from breakfast and the reason for it. I ran at full speed to the meeting point, the same place where we had parted ways yesterday.

When I arrived, I saw nothing. Everything looked so natural, no trace of them. I focused my mind into my new Personal World to try to detect if they were nearby. "What's this?" I felt a faint sensation beside some trees. It felt natural and strange at the same time, as if mana were gathering in that space softly.
As I tried to approach, someone appeared behind me, moving at ridiculous speed. I could barely track their movements until they stopped at my back. "Isn't it a bit earlier than agreed?" Gase's voice reached my ears. "How did you notice? That pseudo-Law or Law of Space shouldn't be enough." She knows about my Law?
"Sorry, something important came up, so I decided to come earlier." I turned to face her and bowed in apology. "Do you also have a Law of Space?" If she could sense my supreme affinity, she must have something similar.
"No, I'm only on the path to obtaining it." Her sincerity caught me off guard. "But that's enough to detect and surpass your little defenses." She stepped closer, circling me, while I stood still like a tree. "You're more interesting than I thought. By the way, what happened?" She stopped in front of me again.
I explained part of the situation, only telling her about my reward and reaffirming that I now had a Law. "Did I waste my reward?" I tried to go straight to the point—I needed an answer to calm my anxiety.
For the first time in all this time, I heard her laugh. It was loud and contagious, the complete opposite of what I expected. "Don't worry too much. When you reach Sapphire rank, it will serve you." Sapphire rank? I was disappointed to know how long I'd have to wait. Still, I found a small light at the end of the tunnel. My effort hadn't been in vain.
"Excuse me, may I know how it will serve me? Must I necessarily wait until Sapphire rank?" I asked as prudently as I could. It seemed they liked me and considered me close because of the Marquis, but that didn't change the fact that Gase was a herald.
"How do I put this? If I mention anything too relevant, the omnipresent voice will silence my words." She stood like a statue, completely motionless. "To reach Ruby rank, you need something particular to happen with a Law. That knowledge stored in your cube could make the path a little easier." Her words were confusing; I wouldn't be able to understand until I was no longer Emerald rank.
"Let me ask someone with experience in a similar case." At that moment, Ho appeared behind her. They stared at each other for several minutes without moving or making a sound. How were they communicating? Were they speaking somehow?
"I have a better answer now, Maki." Finally, she turned to me, and to my surprise, Ho hadn't left. He remained frozen in place. Was he mute?
"He's not mute, just shy." Once again, Gase surprised me, having guessed my thoughts multiple times in such a short time. "He had a similar situation some time ago. He's obsessed with the Space affinity and went through something like this long ago." Do they trust me that much? Or do they simply trust in their own strength? They could erase me with a single move if they wanted…
"The situation is a little different since he was Sapphire rank. These are only assumptions based on his and another similar experience." That was better than nothing. "It helped them a lot to improve their Law at that time. They had a clear improvement when using it, and it gave them a great boost to advance ranks." That reassured me deeply. If it would help me move from Sapphire to Ruby, then everything was fine.
Come to think of it, I completed the dungeon at grade 3. The rewards were meant for someone at Sapphire, not Emerald. It's an investment for the future! Thank you, Maki of yesterday!
"As for your other question, we've concluded this while we were talking. We're not entirely sure—it's based on certain experiences." Her voice turned serious.
"You could use it in this rank if you wish. It would help you improve your understanding of your new Law, possibly making it easier to apply to your skills or even granting you enough knowledge to gain a good ability." That was also good news. If I used it now, I could improve my understanding and maybe adapt it to my movement skill.
"However." That made me pay attention. "We don't know if it would have a lesser or greater effect at Emerald rank. There are no records of such a case. It's your decision." So it wasn't all sunshine and roses. Still, I had the choice to use it now or in the future. I would wait and think about it more carefully.
"Thank you for your help. You've both been very kind in explaining all this to me. My head would've exploded trying to figure out a solution." I bowed to them for their help. They had solved a huge problem for me. My other option would have been to ask the Marquis directly.
"Don't worry, Maki. The Marquis had already thought of similar situations. He assumed you'd have many questions at any time, so we were prepared to answer." I should properly thank Marquis Timal when I saw him.
"That's not the only reason." I tilted my head in confusion. "Ho also finds you interesting. He's surprised to see a child with a Space affinity." Really? Ho hadn't moved; he looked like a tree in those green colors.
"If you want to ask me something, you can, Ho. I'll try to answer as best I can." I had to be grateful to them for helping me.
Gase turned to look at him, then back at me. "Ho says he'll do it when the time comes." Suddenly, blades of fire formed where his hands should be. "Now for the real reason—it's time to train, little limit breaker." I couldn't see it, but I am sure… she is smiling.
