Anthony quickly unsheathed his daggers and hid behind a pillar weighing the pros and cons of a close combat or frontal confrontation with the beasts.
"Let's scope them out first and know their capabilities and limitations." Anthony muttered under his breath and hurled his shadow dagger in an elegant arc.
The dagger made its way stealthily like a thief into the horde of groaning corpses and took off a few bones, making for an awful sight. Anthony watched attentively from his hideout. The corpse emitted a black purplish liquid from its body the moment it was slashed. Only those whose heads were slashed off seemed to have been affected and fell to the ground. As for those who lost a limb or suffered severe cuts, they kept going as normal, as if nothing happened. Their whitish eyes were staring forward with no trace of emotions or life in them.
"Truly terrifying. They don't fear pain and death, they don't even know what it is. Even if you chop them up, they will keep coming. And their numbers are alarming. Anthony, how did you forget such an important piece of information about the undying corpses? The only way to kill them seems to be severing their heads, which means that your aims and slashes must be accurate to a frightening degree." He whispered and stuck out his head from behind the pillar to continue watching.
Anthony nearly had a heart attack the moment his eyes returned to the area occupied by the undead creatures. Some of the corpses, whom he had his special assassination blades, shadow dragon daggers, slash off their necks, were reviving right before his eyes. One of the corpses picked up his head and affixed it back with his own hand. A black energy began to circle around his neck, and soon after, the once severed head reattached itself to the neck.
It seemed that the higher ranked corpses who had a stronger cultivation base while alive had an advantage because the resentful energy they gathered was stronger. While alive they had qi flowing through them, while dead, they gathered nether energy for their own use.
While the lower ranked corpses couldn't resurrect, they were fully capable of doing so. Badump! Anthony's heartbeat immediately accelerated as he analysed the situation before him.
"What's this? So, in essence, they can kill you, but you can't kill them? I don't believe this. How could such a thing appear here? This is not even the demon realm." Anthony muttered, his eyes filled with disbelief.
He quickly hurled the dagger again, this time, taking off more heads with greater accuracy, targeting the more powerful ones most especially. Anthony called back his weapon and waited behind the pillar. But to his greatest dismay, the process repeated itself. The stronger ones soon reattached their heads to their bodies, making his heart sink to the pits of his stomach and his muscles clenched reflexively as he watched the harrowing sight. He was the only human in the sea of undead corpses. There were also other dark creatures and energies floating around the entire place.
"This can't be? How did so many corpses awaken and turn into this abomination? It's alright if a few powerful corpses absorb the energy of heaven and earth, or imbibe the dark energies of resentment around them. But how can a whole battalion of corpse soldiers appear at the same place and get locked up in the houses only to be released once night falls? How did this happen here? Isn't this the home site of the ancient bloodline who had a holy aura? How can such an evil thing which emits a thick aura of darkness exist in this hallowed grounds? What could have triggered it? What could have happened? Was it the blood bath by golden sun sect which activated so much resentment?" He muttered, calling back his dagger.
His eyes suddenly widened in horror as a terrifying thought occurred to him.
"It can't be right? A sorcerer skilled in controlling dark energy. That's right, a sorcerer who wields dark magic has the ability to make the corpses rise and become corpse soldiers. Under his control, such an army of undead creatures who do not fear death or pain, and can't think for themselves are terrifying on the battlefield. If he's also a necromancer with the ability to communicate with the dead, rip souls off the living, swap souls into different bodies and imbibe an already dead corpse with someone else's spirit, that would be truly terrifying. These corpses woke up at this particular time, as if they were programmed like that. Is there a sorcerer hiding in here?" Anthony whispered in trepidation.
If it were only him, there would be no problem. After all, those corpses and traps couldn't think. As a human, he had the advantage of higher intelligence and could outwit them, no matter how difficult it was. But if there was another crafty human with evil intentions behind the scenes, pulling strings to control the evil creatures, that would be another case altogether. Someone evil enough to create corpse soldiers definitely has fancy dreams of conquering the world, being unbeatable and the greatest to walk the land. Taking a life for no reason at all won't be hard for him. And the aura of darkness surrounding the missing blood tribe which sank below ground seems to be thanks to someone practicing dark sorcery in the hidden location for a long time, causing the feng shui to get swapped with negative energy.
"But why did the corpse come out at this time? Did the dark sorcerer release them because he sensed the presence of an intruder? Or did he make it in such a way that they can get out every night to patrol and walk around, just like vampires?" Anthony whispered, looking around him cautiously.
"More keeps coming, fighting is not an option. But where's the sorcerer? Or could it be that there's an evil treasure buried here, causing all that outcome? That's right, a treasure with the aura of darkness can absorb feng shui, using it to develop, and then radiate negative energy which spread around and caused the corpses to wake up after absorbing them. In that case, it would be safe to say that there are space principles which keep the corpse soldiers in the houses during the day, and let them out at night. All that I need to do is hold on and find a way to survive for the next ten hours till day break. Damn it."
Anthony heard a sound behind him, making him frown. He quickly turned around only to see a powerful corpse soldier, almost at the rank of a general raise a wooden spike to hit him. His eyes widened in shock and he quickly avoided it, while instinctively slashing out his shadow dagger at the corpse. A thought suddenly occurred to him and he dashed across the huge square as fast as he could, making his way to the mighty pillar behind the ancestral hall.
The corpse soldier roared and began to hit around him in search of Anthony who he had already identified as his prey for the night, making Anthony smirk.
He decided to run instead of defending himself because the use of qi will make the corpse soldiers attracted to him. And his energy had a strong yang aura, which was the favorite feeding material for such dark creatures. In addition, if there was indeed a dark sorcerer creating and controlling the corpse soldiers, the use of cultivation energy will immediately be detected since he had everything around under surveillance and control.
"First was the tragic death of the blood tribe members which happened just because a greedy person wanted to harvest the blood of innocents who were born with special bloodline. Some blessings are truly a powerful curse."
As Anthony was still thinking about the situation, he suddenly saw the corpses coming towards him, making his eyes widen in horror. It seems they have noticed him, despite the fact that he hid behind the pillar and converged his energy to blend in with the environment.
"How did they see me? Didn't I conceal my aura just now?" Anthony muttered, hiding himself properly behind the pillar. But they kept coming towards him despite carefully adjusting himself to see if they will lose sight of him. Cold sweat broke out on his skin as the hundreds of corpse soldiers kept moving forward, not distracted by his tactics at all.
"Does this mean they're not normal corpse soldiers but sentient ones? They can sense me!"
However, there was no time to think. Anthony quickly broke into a run, rushing towards the hall/ temple behind him, with the corpse soldiers hot on his heels.
"There could be corpse soldiers in there too, especially since these ones also came out from houses. Are you sure you're not about to jump from frying pan to fire? What if you encounter corpses inside, with the incoming ones blocking the door after you must have went in? Won't that be equivalent to riding between the devil and the deep blue sea?" A tiny voice in his mind suddenly asked him the moment he opened the door, throwing him into a dilemma.
