Tower of Memories

Episode 87: Secrets in Smoke

Wednesday morning was neither peaceful nor quiet. Breakfast with Dragons.

"Serafina, can you please explain to your cousin that dreams always mean something?"

I did not want to involve myself in the arguing between Celica and Jarec.

Jarec was not helping matters. At all. "I think you're taking this too seriously."

Without Angelina being here to incentivize Celica to behave her temper was flaring out. "Well I think that you're-"

Against my better judgment I intervened. "One at a time. Please. What is going on?"

"I had a dream last night. Celica is reading too much into it."

"You dreamed of the school falling down on our heads."

"Even if it was a prophetic dream they're never that literal."

Fethris looked amused. Like this was the most entertaining thing he had seen all week. Probably because it wasn't his job to keep the peace in our Tower.

But it was mine, despite the fact that I had no idea what I was doing.

"I think Jarec might understand the meaning of his dreams better than we would, they came from his mind after all," I cut into their argument.

"Thank you," Jarec said while Celica turned to glare at me.

"What?!"

"I didn't say it didn't mean anything, I'm saying that with him being the only person to see it he probably has the most accurate guess to what that meaning is."

"Besides, it wasn't the school falling down. It was more like it was crumbling away." Jarec was not really being helpful in my attempts to defuse this thing.

"That's worse!" Celica's distress might have been funny. If it wasn't earning all of us looks from nearby students. But then again, they could all see the red. We're not exactly subtle.

"I don't think the school is going anywhere Celica. Maybe it has something to do with us uncovering stuff?" I offered.

That got through to her. I think. She shifted from frustration to curiosity. "You think so?"

I took a sip of my morning tea while I tried to think of how to word it. "I mean…there's still a room in Dragon Tower we haven't found or been in."

Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

There was a moment of silence as that fact settled in.

"Right, the Echo Chamber," Russel spoke up.

"If it wanted us to see it, the Tower would have shown it to us by this point," Fethris commented.

"Unless something was preventing it from doing that," I added.

I glanced down at the looks I was getting from my fellow Dragons.

"Stewart. Have you been talking to your informant again?" Celica's tone was filled with a cold fury.

"No, it wasn't Red. You guys are not the only ones Dragon Tower talks to."

"When was this? I thought telepathy doesn't work?" Jarec asked.

"It was last night, and it didn't use words. I asked questions it made noises. It only worked for yes or no questions so I don't have specifics."

Celica huffed.

"We're still going to need more details than that Serafina," Jarec commented.

"I was downstairs it showed me an Echo and I asked a question. Then we both realized that it couldn't really answer me like it does with you guys so we had to improvise a little. It wasn't that informative really." I shrugged after I was done. I don't think the others appreciated it.

"Is this going to be a reoccurring thing with you? You really need to start keeping us filled in on things like this," Celica complained.

"As soon as I'm capable of giving live updates in realtime instead of after things happen I will," I promised.

Jarec narrowed his eyes and then his expression shifted to one that looked like he was thinking about something. "Definitely something to think about."

"If you want to talk about ideas we can do so later. I have plans this afternoon," I offered.

"What do you mean you have plans? Since when do you do things other than brood around Dragon Tower?" Celica still sounded upset.

"Angelina asked for my help with something in Fortune-Telling club." I wondered if whatever she was planning on trying would be able to yield results.

Any workarounds for the curse were still mostly hypothetical. While all the all I had gathered from watching it these past few weeks was at consistent Magic was still hard to fully predict. But with it being club activities there was going to be at least one adult present should this go wrong.

Plus, unlike my fellow Dragons I was more confident in Angelina's ability to steer clear of true danger.

"In theory," Fethris was saying as we waited for Monsters to start, "how would you feel about carrying a bug on your person at all times?"

"There is not a single god or combination of gods in the pantheon that could convince me to do it. Even if the bug was dead."

"Noted. We'll have to continue thinking on it then."

"If any of you want my input, how hard is enchanting an object?" I asked. Partially out of curiosity, partially because carrying a small magical object was far more agreeable than having a skull follow me everywhere or something.

"It depends on the object and the enchantment."

"Isn't there like messaging enchantments? Like I write a message out and then it shows up somewhere else?" I had to remember that they didn't have phones and that none of my classmates would know what texting was.

"Writing a message out might seem like a hassle."

"Yeah but trying other things might risk pissing off the curse and that's what whatever plan you guys are cooking up is trying to avoid, right? Enchantments, so far, have proven to be safe." At least, the teapot and fireplace have yet to go haywire on me.

"Jarec says he's going to do some research."

Delightful. If Jarec's ability to bring paper dragons to life was any indication of his skills, then this project would be in good hands.

I wondered if I would be allowed to take a class on enchantments next semester.

(*********)

Angelina practically kidnapped me from Fethris' side as we left Monsters.

"Come on, this is going to be so much fun!"

"I hope so. You know as well as I do that the curse doesn't play nice."

"Shh. No pessimism. We're going to find something for you to look forward to."

"I have lots to look forward to. Like my mother coming here."

"You need to reprioritize."

"I mean…depending on what you see my priorities could be perfectly aligned."

She smacked me lightly on the arm. Which was a feat considering she was still dragging me towards her club.
