Beacon from Beyond (Book 1 Complete)

Chapter 162

He would handle the next four Void users a lot differently than Boris. No handing it to people with preexisting disorders, he would do this right. And to do it right, he needed to know what he was working with.

He wasn't completely sure if a normal person could be attuned to Void without first gaining the affinity. If they could and they would get the affinity afterwards, he would be more than happy to do so, but if they didn't, he'd need to create a Land Between for Void and let them earn it that way, then attune them afterwards.

For now, he got in contact with some of people from the Church of The Champion, and they worked out a plan. The Church wanted someone who could travel through the multiverse, and Dei was more than happy to give it to them.

His contract didn't say the Void users had to be made in secret, but it would absolutely go against the spirit of the contract if he put them all in one place.

Void wanted its energies to become more prevalent on Earth, for its message to be spread further, not all in one place. It was like he could feel the intent.

It wouldn't have mattered if he'd taken the original deal of billions of people, but he now had to focus on quality, not quantity. He needed five good Void users, all in varying places to start their own journeys.

Boris counted because that was a unique start, a unique person, and a good Void user. He squandered his incredible potential, but that was not Dei's fault, and Void couldn't hold him to it.

He had to pick people that would make waves, but good waves. People that would get the name of Void out there without causing mass genocide. Cough cough, BORIS.

His personal picks would be the third through fifth Void users though. Lucky number two was going to be both an experiment and a helping hand to humanity- an Agarthan scientist.

"You want to… give us a Realmwalker? For free?" Luke asked, baffled.

Dei simply shrugged, "Yea I suppose. I'll walk them through the process of slipping between the cracks in reality if you'd like, but I mostly just have to select someone as a good Void user."

"Good Void user…" Luke mumbled to himself, then seemed to come to a realization. "Does this have to do with your Contract with Void?"

Dei shook his head, "Afraid I can't tell you anything about that."

Luke tsk'd, but dropped it. "Alright, what would the qualities of a good Void user be?"

"Well, first and foremost, I'm looking for someone mentally stable. Void is a state of potential between two options, and it can cause a schism in someone's mind. For example, after I was reincarnated, if I leaned more into Void, I would've been caught between my life as Dei and my life as Leven. I wondered, for a while, why I didn't do this considering how close I was to Void, but I see now that my personal pseudo-affinity takes up that spot instead, and sees a different result. My affinity shares a domain with Void, so to speak, but has an opposing message." He'd gone off on a bit of a tangent but Luke didn't stop him, and didn't seem to mind.

"Alright, so we need someone who can fight against Void? That doesn't seem like a good user."

"Noo no, someone who can manage Void, or embrace it properly. Maybe… think of a superhero. Someone who has two sides, and one is a secret identity. The two sides aren't 'Good and evil.' but 'Good and normal.' No evil. Boris was good and evil, I think."

Luke nodded in understanding, "Alright, I'll get you a lineup and see how it goes. How will you verify they're good candidates though?"

"Honestly? Not 100% sure but I have a spell that lets me glance into people's souls. I'll do that, let Void rummage around, and see what it has to say."

"They won't be… hurt, will they?"

"Oh, heavens no. I'd never let them face Void on their own, I'll filter out anything bad."

Luke seemed to believe him but still said "I'll hold you to that, Dei. I'm going to get you some good, driven people. Even if they were scum, I wouldn't want to see them hurt."

He wasn't even mad at how careful Luke was being. Luke was clearly some kind of important figure in the church and knew a lot about magic, so he was sure to know the side effects of unfiltered Void.

Dei had a hands on traumatic experience with Edward not long ago. Remorse couldn't change what he'd done, but it would shape his future actions.

Luke led Dei into a sort of lounge filled with people, all chatting happily. When they entered, the conversation quieted down but didn't abate, instead taking on a much different tune of excitement.

Luke had told him that nobody knew what they were here for, just that they were going to meet Dei and that he might pick one to give a gift to if they fit his requirements. They were informed ahead of time that he'd be sending out soul feelers and to not be alarmed, so he didn't waste a moment in firing off a branching use of Identify that quickly expanded into everyone here.

His Soul attunement was already making him wildly uncomfortable because he was sitting in a private room with his fans. There couldn't be anything more awkward. He guessed he would start taking damage in around half an hour, much faster than usual.

There weren't any holdouts, everyone in the room trusting him enough to give him a peek into what kind of people they were and their ambitions. Sadly, it was not an automatic process and Void's contract was silent, not having any one preference.

He wasn't left flailing though as Harmonic Sanctuary, which held the Knowledge Skill, walked him through to find exactly what he needed.

He narrowed it down quickly to three people because most in this room were very… wishy-washy; everyone in the room was kind and stable, but most of they wouldn't fare well under pressure.

The three he picked though showed a desire to grow and were unhappy with their current stations, toughing it out. Of the three, he finally got a response from Void as it quickly locked onto one girl in particular, and Dei once more brought up the profile he received in his head.

'Victoria, an ecologist who has started to dream of studying life on other planets ever since she heard- embellished- parts of my story. She wants to go out and save the people on other planets, but what does Void like about- ohh, she wants to become a noble or important figure in other societies while maintaining a life as a nobody here, using Earth as a kind of getaway. Hmm, that would be a good long-term patch, but would Void reasonably hold off on influencing her until then? Or… Oh! Band kid haha, goes to Victorian reenactments. Yea, that hobby would work, and that explains why she wants to be a noble so bad.

'Pretty simple, I could just tell her to get REALLY into her character for now, then lean more into her plan later.'

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

She was the perfect choice, two very neutral sides.

Now, he could turn around and walk away, but he would feel bad for doing so. He was sure they'd interpret it as none of them being good enough, and he'd simply hurt the feelings of everyone involved. Forcing down his apprehension, he walked over to one of the open couches and sat down. Perumah stood behind him like some kind of guard.

Keeping the tension from his voice, he said "I heard you've all wanted to meet me. I already picked out the candidate but I'm not going to tell them until the end. For now, I wouldn't mind answering a few questions?"

Nobody stood or jumped at him, but they all brightened at the chance to talk with him.

'They're good people,' he told himself, 'Just stick it out for thirty minutes.'

* * *

They were led into a smaller lounge as Luke went back to get Victoria, and the moment the door closed Perumah started laughing at him.

'Her voice is getting better at least. I'd hate to have to listen to her mockeries AND a hissing chuckle.'

"You were more afraid the entire time than you were facing down the obsidian elemental!" she teased.

"Nuh uh… I was just angry at the time. The fear didn't come to the forefront of my mind."

"No, I'm positive you didn't have a shred of fear back then, even after it tore your jaw off. You felt ready to jump out of your skin when the guy across from you leaned forward."

He threw his arms up, exasperated, "I just don't want to disappoint them! They expect a worldhopping godslayer, I'm just a dude."

"Dude… Dude," she said, as if tasting the word, "You are a worldhopping godslayer," she told him flatly.

He was luckily saved from responding when the door opened and Victoria excitedly followed behind Luke.

"Me?" she asked, half-skeptical, half-thrilled, then stopped dead when she saw Perumah with her hood down.

Perumah waved, and Dei said "Yes. Please, take a seat and I'll explain why I chose you and what you're chosen for."

"Does it involve…" she trailed off, but gestured to Perumah.

"Not at all, Perumah here is my travel companion. Speaking of, I want to choose you to be the one that carries people from Earth to other planets, a Realmwalker like myself."

She looked ready to faint, but got her bearings about her and finally sat down to listen.

Victoria had a few questions about Dei, but when Perumah spoke and was revealed to be a woman, Dei was all but forgotten as Victoria now had a new figure of focus.

He was more than happy to fade into the background, and enjoyed the growing unease on Perumah's face as she was asked questions she hadn't really considered about the places she'd been. She was starting to feel like she'd done something wrong when Victoria asked if the architecture in the section of Gate City dedicated to larger people was different from the rest. Perumah simply had not payed attention to that kind of thing, and was slowly starting to feel inadequate.

'I'll explain to her how different people have different priorities later, but ha! How do you like it, you overgrown thorn in my side!'

* * *

Dei was slowly running out of time, but that couldn't be helped. At the very least, the lack of requiring sleep made everything possible without using up his two-month budget.

When he finally attuned Victoria to Void, he was thankfully correct in that it would grant her the affinity- the only unusual thing was the very small reward for doing so. Because she had no existing connection, all she received was the affinity and one common spell- Roving Gate. Luckily, that was exactly what she wanted.

The "Limitation" on this contract was also equally strange and endearing as Boris' was, saying "You will embrace both halves of yourself."

It seemed that Void was trying to fight against its cursed reputation by wording its contracts softly. In general, he actually noticed that Void was a very generous contractor. Outside of the System, the affinities weren't actually held to a standard and didn't need to give the user any spells, Void was just doing that to be nice. Dei didn't feel the need to step in or negotiate terms, because Void was naturally giving the people the best deals it could.

True, that might be because it wanted them to be powerful and get its name out there, but Dei liked to believe Void was simply being generous.

Once Victoria was properly magic-ed up, he told her to prepare for an expedition to the North Pole, where he would teach her how to travel dimensions.

He left her bubbling with excitement and made his way to the surface, dipping into the spirit realm to fly over the city until he came upon a stretch of wilderness.

Dei was going to travel a long distance, so he decided it was finally time to test out a new feature the System told him about in his Solidity spell. He recalled the description again.

[Solidity - Level 230 - Fortitude Affinity - Passive

Soul, Mind, and Body walk parallel paths, yet…

Level 168 manual upgrade - your form is further empowered by the web, granting you easier access to two selves- the Union and the World that Walks.

…]

When he redid his Solidity spell with the web of Connection running through his body, he'd apparently gained access to a second body- the World that Walks. This was another name for Leviathans, and the name of a Skill that integrated easily into Right of the Leviathan.

Wild Chains was fast, and Dei's hope was that this new form would be fast as well, but he'd never even seen it. Now that he was away from everyone, he didn't need to hide his abilities anymore. He'd use this time to both see what all the hubbub was about "The World that Walks," and to catch up with perumah on the way about the difference being Chaos Born made.

Without further ado, he triggered the transformation, and felt everything shift.

He grunted in pain as his flesh was imbued with new meaning, and his natural form was altered. Despite already being large, he grew once more and his muscles began to bulge. The worst part, however, was the violent squirming of Connection within his soul.

No longer were its roots content to sit still within him; he felt them peel apart to even finer levels and burrow upwards. When they broke through the surface of his soul, he roared in pain.

From his sides and back, Dei felt Connection expose itself to the open air and lash at his surroundings in response to his emotions.

When it finally stopped, he sighed in relief and exasperation. 'Why does the world keep making me grow super large?'

Perumah took several steps back, looking up at him with a slight grin "Your form is mighty!" she shouted.

"I can hear you just fine," he rumbled back "Mind sending me an image of what I look like?"

She complied, and he finally got to see it all.

He was twenty feet tall, even more muscular, with claws on his hands and feet. The gills on his neck and webbing between his fingers told him he was supposed to be aquatic as well. The blue-ish skin didn't contradict this either.

He was surprised to see he had four eyes and somehow hadn't realized until that point. Not only that, his teeth were sharpened to a point, like that of an angler but much shorter.

As she moved around to his backside, he got to see the thousands of the thin white tendrils that replaced his hair and continued to grow down his back until it hit the base of his spine, which now showed that he had a tail.

It looked like a whale's, but he knew it was supposed to be a Leviathan's. Peeking through the Connection on his back as well were two… fins? Not dorsal, but more like the wings of a manta ray, except they were parallel on his back instead of at his sides. The lines of connection floated aimlessly now, suspended in the air like it was water.

The most striking difference, to him at least, was the feeling he gave off. He was no longer a Union, and the meanings his Union self projected were different in the same way that one Race or the next would appear different. Prime humans had more Endurance meanings, Flesh Traps gave off more Slothful meanings, etcetera etcetera, but the World that Walks form felt vicious.

'It's their killing form, the shape they take when they're about to go to war. Perhaps they become more humanoid for the extra dexterity or tool usage?'

He knew, instinctively, that he'd be far more dangerous like this. He'd take less damage and dish out more because it was very concept heavy.

At the same time, he actually could not shrink past this point. He had to be large, because the meanings within it made it so. 'Which means I can't stay like this forever if I want to talk to people again.'

Finally, it was time to test its speed and for Dei to make his way North.

He checked his compass, then offered his hand to Perumah. She raised her eyebrow but stepped on it, and he lifted her to his back.

"Hold on tight, I don't know how fast I can fly yet."

Situated within the fluff of Connection on him, Dei carefully cocooned her to ensure she didn't fall off, checked his compass, and took off into the air.

He tried to make it a gentle acceleration, but both were surprised at the force pressing down into them. When he made it to cloud level, he finally stopped.

Perumah grunted in displeasure at the rough takeoff, but Dei couldn't be more happy.

'I was barely even trying! I wonder how fast my top speed is. I'll test it after we hit the ocean.'

Leveling himself out, Dei shot off into the horizon.
