Day 64
"All right.. I'll start tracking those mage guys. I don't remember what they were called… Actually, I could just look in the bestiary but.. Meh, whatever."
"What bestiary?" Oldren asked.
"You don't- damn. Y'all's status sucks." I thought for a moment. "Statuses? Stausi?"
"Max this is not the time." Lily reprimanded.
"I suppose. Ight, i've started tracking them. I'll lead the way, y'all follow me."
"...What else would we do?" Oldren questioned.
"Juuuuust making sure." I drawled.
I appraised the ground for a moment looking for any possible leads. I set off after a moment, the other two following close behind. Lily used my dash immediately, letting me and Oldren run at higher than usual speeds, though still far from my max. Heh.
As I looked around for clues, I noticed the fragmented state of the city's mana. Instead of the normal, disconnected yet omni present flow, all of the mana was bunched up into huge channels like roots floating dead in the air, almost suspended. From what I've seen, mana is most natural in those thin strings or some kind of diffused state we can't see, like that haze around the knightmare. Though, rather than some other form of mana, I think that was just some kind of body enhancement thing.
I haven't had the pleasure of bunching up mana before, as I still don't have any spells. I think I'm going to go to some city and learn. Oldren said the capital is pretty well known for its pursuit of knowledge, so I'm thinking that will be our next stop. Heading to a library has been my main goal this whole time anyways.
Anyways, I'm guessing mana bunching is the main go-to for mages in a fight. I guess it's more efficient? But, man, this can't be good for the environment. I bet they'll have to send people out here to untangle all of these, or just mishandle it enough so that it dissipates. Now that I think about it, what is it about human touch that repulses mana?
I clear my thoughts as I nearly trip over a piece of debris. I need to focus. Increased intellect doesn't help me focus, it just helps me think faster when I do get distracted. I glowered at the surroundings as if the city owed me money.
Looks like they used those bombs again. BAM. Actually, from the sounds of it, they still are. Another pulse made its way through the ground and passed my feet. I looked around, checking for any sign of what had caused the explosions.
Remote detonated explosives, but is that what they really are? My moneys on magic, either some unknown application of mana or a spell. I redouble my efforts, searching harder for any odd mana formations, or large clumps of mana.
" Stop! Something's off." We ground to a halt once I notice a spell inscribed on the road in front of us. A medium circle, about seven feet across and woven with spatial mana. I made sure to stay away as I inspected it. I attempted to cast [Super appraisal] but was unable to as Lily had already done so.
"Some kind of teleportation trap." Lily said inquisitively. "Good thing we didn-" I cut myself off as the magic roared to life, and the circle quadrupled in diameter. I [lept] for its outer perimeter, but was caught and held midair by some kind of intangible force.
I fought it, strained against it. The mana within dimmed as it was expended to keep me still. After three seconds I could twitch my fingers, which is when the rest of the circle activated. Three of five small circles about one foot in diameter were glowing, which must have been the telekinesis part of the trap. Then, the inner part glowed. All the mana was sucked to the center. I didn't see what happened next, as the scene before me was shortly exchanged with another.
All at once the hold on me was lifted, and I was transferred to somewhere else. I checked the seek I placed on Lily, to find us multiple miles apart.I was still in the city, but very close to the center. I lamented my inability to put a seek on Oldren, but relented on my stress due to his still full health bar.
I walked forward while very carefully inspecting the surroundings for any more traps. I found nothing, but something more concerning. For one, the complete lack of mana in the area, even the corded, chunk lumps of mana. For two, my danger sense was steadily increasing.
The sense worked like a minimap in a game. Like how In a game you could see little red slices to show where enemies were relative to you, I felt pangs of anxiety in zones of my body, scaling to danger. The real concerning part now was that my whole body was screaming danger, and the anxiety was continually getting worse.
From nervous to afraid, afraid to terrified, terrified to petrified. I felt my heart hammering in my chest, and even though I wasn't afraid, the sheer ominousness was getting to me. Beads of sweat ran down my face as I upped my pace through the town, eventually reaching the town square.
All at once, the feeling vanished. I immediately felt better, but my mind was in turmoil. My eyes had been darting around everywhere, but now they trained on the sky. Specifically, the huge cluster of space magic spreading out.
Like a shock wave, beautiful streams of blue tinged with silver spread out into a truly colossal circle, spreading to encompass what seemed to be the whole city from my perspective. The mana danced as it formed immensely complex patterns and stitched into runes of its own volition. The fiendishly complicated spell came online all at once when the mana finally stilled its rapid work, and all at once, I felt weightless for an instant, then nothing.
The whole circle was spinning. Very slowly, but nonetheless, spinning. Parts of the circle had other, much smaller circles within that turned the opposite way. My eyes danced across, searching for a purpose. I checked my surroundings once again, confused at the pristine lack of danger.
I flipped on all of my senses, even rumination, and found nothing. Content to continue searching, I sat on the fountain and exhaled a liberating breath.

A flood of information interred my mind, which was then organized and filed into cabinets like a master librarian. The information was so precise and full I was taken aback.
< Appraisal result: Grand Ritual magic: Wide Area Spatial Annihilation- A spell that erases all matter within a given area by exchanging its space with a hostile dimension that can not sustain matter or energy. The spell is rarely used, as the amount of air deleted disbalances the world, even with the controlled air generation of wind sources. This caused the divines to restrict its usage. The area of the spell is decided by its relative size and elevation, its shape always a cylinder. This spell can not be avoided, and has a 100% fatality rate for all trapped within. The only way to dodge this spell is to be out of its activation radius before it is triggered. The spell needs a minimum of five minutes to activate, to discourage its use in assassination and prevent mass civilian casualty's or racial genocide. >

Suddenly, the airspace around me grew thick with bold black lines being sucked into the air. Like short, black mana strings that carried an immense weight. I looked up at the magic circle once again. The construct had lost its beauty due to the sheer malevolence it cast onto the surroundings.
I was shook to say the least. Questions danced in my head, but I cast them aside for the most important one.
"How long do I have?"

"Shit, where do I need to go?"
<<< The spell radius is 1.47 miles across. >>>

A red line shot from my feet and cleaved through the roads. It traced over rooftops and through bridges.
I dashed. I raced across the town, doing everything in my power to stay on course. I went through alleyways and over houses. I passed dozens of people. I check my timer; 1:54. I had no time to talk. I simply yelled 'get out of here!' while running. If any of them listened, I never saw.
The death divination skill continued working. It threw visions and prophecies at me. I saw years into the future. Other me's, paths I could take. I even saw my own life end a few times. But mostly, I saw this event end. Many of the pathways showed me tripping on something and getting erased. A few more showed me getting other people out, and getting erased. Many others foresaw me helping and not dying. They whispered of how my good deeds would help me in the future.
I searched for this path's end. The road ahead was dark. It grew forward every step I took. So the future is still uncertain huh? How can it be so sure of the hypothetical but not of the present?
< 0:18 >
I was near the edge. The lines that whipped upwards increased in density. They rose faster like a storm. The lines had already been covering everything, barely an inch apart, but now they covered my eyes like a mop. I felt the space around me fold, and the air trembled. Everything did.
I grit my teeth and pushed my already empowered dash even further. With five seconds left on the timer, I was barely a hundred feet away. I used overload on my speed, and went forward even faster.
Three seconds later, I used [launch] as well. It propelled me even closer to the finish line as the thick miasma of death choked me. It cloaked my eyes like a veil. The timer hit one second, then zero. The timer shut down, and the darkness became absolute. A foot away from the border, I put every last ounce of will I had into the next jump.
I rocketed through the air. My arms made it through, then my head. My torso, and then.
My legs vanished.
Past my knee, about a third of the way up my thigh, was air. I crashed to the ground, unable to turn myself in midair without my legs, and screeched in agony. The pain wasn't as bad as the assimilating digestive system, though by a thin margin. Such thoughts did nothing to quell the insurmountable pain.
I triggered my [Health Pulse] which I had saved since the timer started. The bleed stopped, but that was all. I consumed 50 of my stocked stamina and triggered the active part of [Health Pulse]. It felt like I was still bleeding as I felt myself drained. Floods of energy carved a path through my body to regenerate my legs. The perfectly smooth and exposed stumps flooded with green light, which grew.
The green faded and was replaced by biomass as it continued winding downwards. Or sideways, considering my current orientation. I felt my teeth crack as I clenched them from the unbearable pain. Despite the magical means of the regeneration, it hurt just as much as it probably should have.
In twenty seconds my knees were back, with the cap still hardening. A minute later, and my ankles were next on the un-chopping block. As I regenerated, my pain stayed the same. It dulled over time, but increased at the same time as the amount of me that could feel expanded.
Minutes later and with barely 25% stamina left my legs were completely back.

I stared at my upgradeable skills.
…whatever, go ahead.
< [1st] Tier [Cutting resistance] Has ranked up into [2nd] tier: [Greater Cutting resistance]- Further decreases damage taken from cutting attacks. Decreases damage from critical strikes. >
< [2nd] Tier [Toxicology] Has ranked up into [3rd] tier: [Lethal Toxicology]- Making poison, applying poison, consuming poison. All is within your grasp. Lethality of poison recipes increased. Provides resistance against all biological negative effects. Provides knowledge of basic alchemy. >
< [1st] Tier [Grip] Has ranked up into [2nd] tier: [Vice Grip]- Increases grip strength and control. By expanding a small amount of stamina, the hand can be locked in position.>
< [1st] Tier [Mana Manipulation] Has ranked up into [2nd] tier: [Mana Shifting]- Provides knowledge of moving greater quantities of mana.>
Wow. I forgot about how many benefits upgrading a fused skill will give. I can already feel the information nestling into my mind. Though, usually I have to find myself in a position to use the knowledge before I can access it. Still, I have it now.
I stand up, my legs shacking. I feel my feet scrunch uncomfortably on the cobblestone. That's when I realize.
My shoes. My $60 Nikes. They're gone. My comfortable, well used, hole filled shoes are gone.
"...y jays…."
"THEY SCUFFED MY FUCKING JAYS!!!" I screamed with indignation. I sat up straight, my anger granting me the stability I needed. Those shoes were so comfortable compared to the ones made here. These guys just wear wooden sandals everywhere. They are so uncomfortable. And now, I'll never have foot comfort again.
"I just wanted xp before… but now? Now it's personal." I unsheathed the large black blade I had stuffed into the waistband of my pan- shorts. My shorts. Sigh..
I pondered them for a moment. The swords are nice and all, but honestly? They kind of aren't my style. Besides, that walking knightmare actually inspired me. Those blades were coming out of its arms…
Would Oldren be mad if I asked for a refund?
I felt a prick at my feet, and saw a spiky ant nipping at my heels. My anger boiled up, and I had to stop myself from throwing a [[Wave Cutter]] at the ant. Figured that might be slightly overkill. But the ant reminded me of something. My rage.
I tested my new legs, before bounding across the city.
As I run over to the nearest magic surge, I decide to appraise the blades once again. Last time I did, I got a vague status with a whole lot of words but no explanations. Now though? With my temporary high level system authority, which could run out any moment, maybe I can get some answers.
< Weapon: Short sword's (Pair)
Name: Dusk
Grade: A
Durability: 12000/12000
Enchantments: Sharpness 6 | Fury 3 | Critical Strike 4 | Leech 2 | Feather Weight 3
Traits: Night Shade | Shadow Affinity | Abyssal Edge | Void Nexus
Ability: X Scissor | Shade Binding >
< Grade: Takes into account the actual weapons quality, without accounting for its traits, abilities, or enchantments. Most of the grade is decided by the materials, but it can be boosted a tier if the material matches the type of weapon, or if the smith is skilled, among other possibilities. Grades use the English alphabet, for some reason, and can also have a plus or minus next to it. As an example of the hierarchy: C- is still higher than a D+. Expand for more detail on specific grade definitions. >
< Enchantments: Magical enhancements applied to a weapon after accounting for its traits and abilities. Some enchantments simply increase stats, either a flat number or a percentage. Others can give abilities, but these remain low level. Enchantment levels max out at ten, but those that add abilities usually max out before ten. The amount of enchantments that can be put on a weapon are loosely constrained by its grade. Careful preparation and the use of alchemical catalysts can supplement the process, but grade is the go to for enchanting on the fly. Generally, the longer it takes to enchant a weapon the better it will be. A master enchanter can boost an enchantment level above ten, at which it will appear as an X instead of eleven. How this is done is not known. >
<Traits: Unique qualities of the weapon granted by its material and shape. Traits are almost always passive, and can not be controlled without great difficulty. They can, however, be predicted. >
<Abilities: Rare qualities held by high grade weapons made with rare resources. The quality of the material is the most important factor. Abilities can still appear in low grade rare weapons, though they always destabilize the integrity of the weapon. Abilities are usually active, and are mysterious in their acquisition conditions. The value of a weapon, not accounting for grade, is usually surmised by the amount of possessed traits and abilities. Having one ability is rare. More than one is almost mythical. >
<Enchantments:
Sharpness- Increases cutting power and blade damage.
Fury- Increases attack speed.
Critical Strike- Increases damage dealt to weak points.
Leech- Heals the user a small percentage of damage dealt from every hit.
Feather Weight- Decreases the weight of the weapon >
<Traits:
Night Shade- The user becomes harder to see in the dark. The power of the blade is increased in the dark. Poison applied to the blade is maintained and strengthened.
Shadow Affinity- Channeling shadow mana into the weapon will greatly increase its power. Enhances shadow magic when used as a catalyst.
Abyssal Edge- Ignore armor by phasing through it to a small extant. The depth of piercing is increased the lower the light levels reaching the weapon. The blade is also incredibly sharp, and will never lose its edge. Allows the blades to phase through each other.
Void Nexus- Absorbs airborne shadow magic. This can regenerate the blade, albeit slowly, and boost the properties of Night Shade and the weapons abilities. If the amount of shadow mana stored reaches its limit, the energy can be given physical form and shot out like a bullet that ignores barriers.
<Ability:
X Scissor- Sends out a very strong X shaped blade force, produced by holding the blades in an X formation while one is phased through the other.
Shade Binding- Stabbing the blade into an entity's shadow will prevent them from moving, though the weapon's durability will be rapidly decreased as the entity struggles.
Huh, maybe I don't have to learn how to duel wield. Maybe the strategy is to use one blade to hold an enemy down and use the other to execute them.
As I fly across the city looking for the mages, I pester the Status with as many questions as I can form. Most were about status customization, and the inner workings of both the regular and sub-system.
The system was happy to answer any questions about itself. It became a bit more cagey when I asked about the world, though I managed to confirm the existence of a bunch of monsters. Pretty much all the mythological monsters are here, including dragons. But goblins and undead aren't a thing. Necromancy doesn't seem to exist here.
Slimes, however, do exist, and seem to be considered boss monsters. The system was cagey about the existence of a slime core, but it assured me slimes had no weaknesses. Besides that, the system adamantly refused to answer questions about its creators. It simply confirmed that the gods were behind it.
The purpose of the system, how it was made, even who made it. The system refused to say. I didn't get a 'no authority' message either, it just locked me into an endless loading screen. I sighed and just continued on.
I felt a danger trace toward me as my spider sense pushed me to the ground of a particularly flat rooftop. An almost invisible blade of force constructed of wind mana bleared past me, right were my neck was moments before.
These guys are the best! I don't even have to look for them, they just come for me! I smile despite myself, and track the position of the enemy. I see one of the mages flying in the air, floating aloft with an impressive mana circle surrounding its waist.
Two circles floating a foot away from its shoulders formed, and mana flooded into them. Man, these guys just have straight up telekinesis huh? How do they do that?? I wonder if I could interrogate one?
The circles crushed together and flowed to each of the mages hands. They formed into blades, about as long as mine but much thinner. The mage flew at me. Literally, he got to me in like four seconds.
I managed to pull out my Dusk just in time to intercept one of the wind blades. The mage flew around me, trying to slash me apart from every angle. I deftly parried his every strike, waiting patiently for something to change.
The mage paused for a moment, so I took the opportunity and shoved one blade inside of the other in an x formation. It was bizarre seeing one blade clip into the other so smoothly. I waited a second for some kind of trigger, but when nothing happened, I simply ripped the blades apart.
A small dark x erupted from the split and tore through the air. The mage dodges it quickly, which stops its next flurry of cuts. Taking the opportunity, I lunge forward and [Cleave] into its stomach. The mage just barely dodged the actual blade, but the skill's aoe cut into its 'flesh' regardless. I keep forgetting other people can't see skills.
I dismissed the yellow shine of the skill and lept back as three lances of wind flew towards me. I dodged all of them, narrowly not getting pierced by another. The mage spilled black, glimmering blood that painted the ground into a sea of stars. It kinda reminded me of the minecraft end portal.
The mage clutched the wound for a moment before relaunching its barrage of attacks. It now kept to range, only occasionally going for a melee strike. I waited for its next stabbing strike. I missed my window, but as it fell back, I managed to plant my blade deep into its shoulder.
It stutered from the wound, and when I noticed its shadow I remembered the other ability of Dusk. I stabbed my right blade into its shadow, which produced ripples and spawned several thin strips of shadow which wrapped the mage's limbs.
It barely had time to struggle as I ripped my blade out of its left shoulder, and in the same motion, spun around and cleaved through its neck. Whatever constituted for its spine held its head onto its body, but the damage was done.
The mage didn't speak a single word, but I could see it still moving to try something. Not willing to give it the time of day, I dug Dusk into its chest. With no notification, and while wondering how it was still alive, I ripped upwards and sliced its head in half.
< lv43 Fraction blood demi star (Wind) Slain 4300 XP acquired >
No soul huh? Shame. At least now I know that these are the same guys from a week ago.
With that confirmed, I made a beeline for Lily and Oldren. My assimilated stamina bonus was still going strong, my energy was relentless. The stamina expended from the fight was almost restored. After all, the stat also increases regeneration rate.
I almost trip when I remember that I should have eaten that guy. I think about going back, but eventually forget about it. I'll definitely be fighting more of them.
Cursed with the gift of prophecy, I get ambushed by three of them. A sphere of roiling flame crashes into the ground where I had once stood. Falling in the air as I was now, I got a good look at the aggressors.
Obviously one fire mage. He was actually at the front, with an armored hand stretched forwards. All of them had the same blue colored gloves, lightly spattered with gold markings. But this guy had black metal greaves, with wicked curved claws at the end.
There were two more, one on each side and standing a few feet back. I got a feeling that this one was stronger than the other ones I've faced. It was also a bit larger then the others. I got a distinct masculine feeling from this one.
'He' wasted no time, and flew at me. With a click of his armored heels, a thunderous explosion shook the ground and propelled the mage at me, claws outstretched. He missed the swipe as I slid to the side. He twisted in midair and landed on the ground ten feet away from me.
He exploded forward again, lancing forward with his arms like a spear. I dodged his jab, but then got thrown to the side as the gauntlet exploded. Ears rang as I rolled into a standing position. The mage was staring at me, his gauntlets now flaming.
We both lunged at each other. A violent melee ensued at a breakneck pace. Not only was he fast, but strong as well. As strong as me even, but much more skilled. His dance was refined and efficient. As I was fighting for my life, he was simply going through the motions.
I ripped my blade upwards, and finally managed to score a hit on him. I pushed forward with this new momentum, only to find resistance at every strike. Through my mana sense, I could see the right most mage channeling raw mana into small but strong barriers in the shape of disks.
I jumped back and away from the mage. He lifted his injured left arm, and I watched frustrated as green energy coalesced around his arm and closed the wound. He's got two supporters, one healer, one defender. Fuck.
I clashed Dusk together and unleashed an X blade. When he dodged, I threw both of the blades at the ground in different spots, and then activated [Wrecking Smash] while converging my stats to strength.
I put every ounce of strength into the punch that I aimed right at his face. He lanced out with his flaming hands and stopped the punch cold. Unfettered, I kept hammering him with blows until the skill ran out. He had retreated outside the range of my thrown blades.
I grabbed both of them and narrowly blocked his next strike. He spread both of his arms, and then generated a dozen flickering orbs of flame. He threw all of them at me, though they traveled relatively slow, they bobbed in the wind like swarm missiles. He traveled with them as well, and timed his hits with the projectiles.
One of the orbs would crash onto the ground and explode, then he would take advantage of the smoke screen to swipe at me. I loosed an x scissor at point blank, forcing him to strafe to the left. With the move anticipated, I struck as hard as I could in the form of a left hook.
The strike left him reeling, but not vulnerable. I took the time to retreat and check my status.

Two new skills? Great! And they're both for defense. I think block is my first ever active defense skill. Well, not active right now, but eventually.
We flew at each other again, but now only half of me was fighting him. The other half was thinking.
This isnt working. My attacks have only worked a few times, and when they did, his supporters healed him right away. Plus, I'm pretty sure he's just playing around with me. Those two could be doing way more than they currently are, and this guy is taking it easy.
My increased speed allowed me to keep up with split attention, but even combined I still couldn't get the upper hand. He seemed to notice my split attention as he suddenly blurred and appeared behind me. Monumental force slammed into me and I was forced to kneel as my knee was propelled heavily into the cracked ground. He circled around me and slammed his own knee into my jaw, using another explosion to propel the move.
The attack knocked me on my back, and left my head ringing. My teeth had cracked from the force, so as I got up, I spit out multiple bloody tooth shards.
Too fast, too strong. But more than anything, too skilled. Their team work is impeccable. If I ever get an opening, which is a huge if, it doesn't matter anyways. As it stands, I can not win this.
So let's change the standing.
I feign weakness. My body shudders, and I fall to one knee. I tremble before picking myself up while shaking. I bit my lip in frustration and hunched over. My eyes darted around, but this was not a part of the act. Once I found an entry way to escape, I made it obvious what I was looking at and began backing away.
Moments before I took off running, I heard a voice. A deep hum that sounded wrong in some way, just barely within the human ability to create the sound. It was ominous.
"Aw, don't run."
The mage transformed. Flame covered both his gauntlets and leg armor. It unfolded, and the claws at the tips of his fingers receded to the top of the fingers. Fire flared there. It got hotter and hotter on all ten fingers, creating a solid flare reminiscent of a welding torch.
Fire burnt his mask. Flame traced the gold lines and peeled back to reveal orange lines that pierced outward like fire, backed by an ash black canvas. The fire continued and transformed the entirety of his body into black and orange. Some of the cloth was burnt away as well, revealing all of his legs and half of his torso, also coated in that thick black armor.
"I don't like to chase!"
An explosion sounded off beneath his feet, and fires like rocket boosters roared to life from his feet. He flew at me twice as fast as before, now with one hand reaching towards my face with claws outstretched.
