Chapter 59 – All About Timing

"I had a great time. I also had no idea what to expect so it was nice that there was such variety. Also, I didn't plan on running into her again but am glad we did." – Kristi, expressing her thoughts on the Halloween party.

"So?…"

"So… what?" Kristi said, looking at Val's reflection in the bathroom mirror, as she bounced her eyebrows at her.

Her best friend rolled her eyes. "So, did you make a move?" She finished her question. When Kristi flushed and looked away with a little smile, Val knew she had her on the hook. "Spill."

Kristi pulled at her top, adjusting it for the hundredth time. "I kissed him." She finally blurted after what seemed like an eternity of Val boring holes in the side of her head with her stare.

"And?"

"And he kissed me back."

Val scoffed and threw her hands up. "Come on, details." She turned to face her fully. "Open mouth? Tongue? Oh, oh, did he do the little nibble on your lip?" She rattled off the questions, sneaking in one of the things she liked.

"What? No!" Kristi looked at Val like she was crazy. "It was just a kiss. A nice, plain, normal kiss. Nothing crazy or weird. Why would he bite me?" She coughed slightly and took a sip of water.

"Oh, just let him try it on you. If you don't like it, he will know and back off." Val answered off handedly. "So, you are saving the kinks for the costume you picked out for him?"

"PHTFFFB. Gods damn it, Val!" Kristi spit her water and had to hang her head over the sink, so the water didn't run down her costume. She looked over the silently laughing fox. "What the hell is wrong with you?"

Val handed Kristi a towel before sliding up behind her and running her hands over her shoulders and down her arms. She stood on her toes and whispered in her ear. "Just know that if tonight is the night, its fine by me." Then she spun away, returning to her end of the counter while the dragoness flushed from her the tips of her ears down into her collar.

Kurt tugged at his costume a couple times, trying to get it to settle in place for what seemed like the hundredth time. The tunic part wasn't exactly well proportioned, being more of a straight cut until the waist where it sharply tapered with the help of the belt. It wasn't exactly flattering in its fit, but it was a serviceable approximation of the character. Now if only the hat would cooperate.

"Fucking thing, how…" Kurt was trying to get it to stay in place but felt like every time he turned his head, the damn thing would slip off. Eventually, he just took it off and put it on the kitchen counter to deal with later. He perked up when he heard the door down the hall open.

Looking up, he saw Val strut into the living room, clearly hamming it up with the exaggerated sway of her hips. The skintight, black spandex costume hugged every curve of her body and ran from neck to ankle. The yellow rings and circles on the arms and legs did more to accentuate the movements than break up the figure, highlighting where each part of her was moving.

She had decided to use the costumes included ear head band and tail since her natural ears and tail were fluffy rather than smooth and would stand out too much. It had also saved her from needing the paint which she promised to use later. The entire look was topped with a black and yellow choker to bridge the gap and her black sneakers blended perfectly with the costume.

"Wow." Kurt said as she did a little twirl. "I don't think I can look at that Pokémon the same again." He said, mostly to himself, as she strutted over to give him a kiss.

"Glad you like it. You look good too." She said. "Oh, Kristiiii." She called. When no answer came, she rolled her eyes and skipped over to the hall. There was a brief, muted argument before a Zero Suit Samus was shoved into the living room, stumbling to a stop a few feet from Kurt.

Kurt took in the sight as Kristi tried to regain her composure. While she didn't make any alterations to the costume, she definitely filled it out well. Her powerful legs on prominent display below the 'leather' utility belt the set came with. The eight-inch cut black combat boot really rounded out the bottom half of the costume. It wasn't exactly lore accurate, but it was clear who she was.

Once she stood up straight and turned around, Kurt could see the top half better. The top part was pretty much unadorned other than the pattern and ran up to a high collar, just like the character but her gloves were fingerless for convivence. Above the line of her collar, Kristi had styled her hair in a high ponytail that had just the right amount of bob and bounce. He noted that he could just faintly see her hard nipples through the tight top, despite her likely wearing an under shirt if the line around her collar was any indicator.

"Kristi, you look amazing." Kurt said after she finally stopped long enough for him to get a good look at. "You are seriously nailing the look."

Kristi had come to a stop and stared at him, her eyes roaming up and down his body and distracting her from her own exposed state. Kurt saw her bite at the inside of her lip and her thighs came together suddenly as she did a little shimmy.

Kurt did a little twirl, lifting his arms and rotating slowly so she could get a good look at him. Val came out at that moment and swiped the hat off the counter, turning it inside out to take a look before pulling a strip of plastic ribbon out.

"Here, this should help it stay." She said while touching the rubberized strip that remained after the protective plastic was removed. "You needed to take the plastic off before wearing it if you want it to stay put." She then placed the long-tailed cap on his head, adjusting it to sit at the right angle.

While Kurt was distracted by Val placing the hat on his head, he didn't see Kristi's nostrils flare out or hear the slight squeak she made. She quickly turned away and walked to the fridge to distract from her fantasy suddenly turned real.

Kurt just pretended he didn't notice and turned back to Val who was staring at Kristi's butt as she bent to get a bottle of water from the bottom of the fridge door. "SO!" He said very loud to get her attention. "Are we eating lunch here or want to try and get something while we are out?"

Val snapped her head over and looked at him with a smirk that all but shouted that he had stepped into a trap. "Oh, let's wait. I know how much you just love 'eating out'." She said putting a lot of emphasis on the words.

Thump. They both looked at Kristi. She was staring at them with her hand held in a grip like something was supposed to be in it. The bottle of water rolling behind the edge of the counter pretty much confirmed exactly what had been in that hand.

Val winked at her while Kurt rolled his eyes. "Ha, good one. Well, if we have everything, let's get going." It was at that point that Val made a critical error, one that would cause much regret from both parties involved.

She turned around and wiggled her butt at Kurt while making a face at Kristi, whose eyes had gone wide. What Val mistook for shock, thus spurring her teasing onward, was actually her intently watching Kurt wind back with his hand.

CLAP. Hand met spandex clad butt cheek in what sounded like a very crisp high five or when someone swats a fly with a roll of newspaper. "EEEEEEE!" Val squealed, jumping into the air and covering herself with her hands. But it was too late.

"Simmer down or I find a Poke ball to shove you in." Kurt said and grabbed his keys. "Let's get a move on." He pointedly ignored the flushed expression on Val's face after the initial sting had faded. She followed shortly after him, making grabby hands at his own posterior.

After figuring out how to get Val's ears and tail in the car, the trip into town was moderately quiet, as they talked about what they wanted to do. Kurt tried to explain some of the holiday's traditions to the girls. Val was more interested in the food while Kristi seemed to be more curious about any games there would be.

Naturally, parking was hectic, despite being directed by police officers, and they had to circle the block to find and open space. Unfortunately, that space was a little bit of a hike to get to the section of town that was the center of activity. They were teased the entire walk with the smell of food and sound of festivities drifting on the wind.

They popped out onto the blocked off street across from the coffee shop, so they decided to stop there first. While they could see all the carnival games and food trucks, they decided to save those till after they said hi to their friends. The event was running until sunset after all, so they had plenty of time.

They could see the line outside the building as they walked up and spotted Jamie and Don handing out free cider and donuts to people. Don waved as they approached, a big smile on his face as he handed a donut to a pint-sized jedi, while giving the dad a cup of cider. The inside was a little quieter but there seemed to be some people still willing to pay for a hot drink and a pastry.

"Heya, guys." Kate said from her side of the counter. She was dressed as a witch of some sort, judging from the pointed, wide brimmed hat she wore. "Wow, you look good." She said while looking all of them over.

"Thanks!" Val preened, tilting her head and making the fake ears flop around. The motion made him wonder how she managed to attach the headband, but he quickly dismissed the thought.

"Hey Kate, how's it going so far?" Kurt asked.

They were filled in on how they had been doing on business. It turned out that while they had been giving out free things outside, they had been doing steady business since they opened with plenty of people just popping in to buy something small to show their appreciation.

Kristi smiled as they were interrupted by what seemed to be a princess with several of her superhero friends that came up with bags open. They all said trick or treat, getting a bit of candy, before running off to collect more. While she watched the kids, Kurt was watching her reaction, noting it for the future.

They left the coffee shop a few minutes later and began to wander around the event. "So, what first?" Kurt asked while dodging a pack of children and stopping to let their parents try and catch up without having to go around them.

"Food then games." Val said with an air of authority. "Perhaps after games we can get some snacks then browse the shops before we think about dinner." She grabbed his hand and began pulling him along while sniffing at the air.

Kurt grabbed Kristi's hand and pulled her along, making a short chain to keep them all together. They laughed while weaving their way around the clumps of people and toward the line of food trucks. Fifteen minutes later, they were each eating something deep fried and delicious while wandering around the carnival games.

"What's that one?" Kristi said and pointed to people throwing baseballs at a target and trying to dump a person into water.

"Dunk tank. Good eye, that one is a classic for all public festivals before the weather turns." Kurt said, he didn't expect it to be here, but the weather was unseasonable warm.

She stopped and watched a few teens trying to hit the target while the man on the platform gently mocked them. "Can I try it?" Naturally they agreed and stood in the crowd as she waited her turn to throw the ball.

Eventually the man dressed as a clown was submerged after one of the fire fighters told the kid throwing balls to move a little closer. He rotated out for another person dressed as a police office, obnoxious fake mustache and cheap aviators included. The hat pulled low over his face rounded out the look and he took a seat just as Kristi was given the baseballs.

"Come on, let's see what you got! I bet you a dollar you can't sink me with a hundred balls." He called out to her. While it was normal for the person in the tank to heckle those throwing, it had been mostly idle commentary and not directed to the person.

Kristi smirked as she stepped up, clearly accepting the challenge. She hefted the ball, getting a feel for it while setting her feet. Just as she wound back, he called out again.

"Don't miss!"

The sudden shout startled her, and Kristi missed the small metal target. The man in the tank laughed and jeered while the lady picking up the balls noticed how hard it had impacted the backstop and looked at Kristi with a frown of concern.

"What's the matter? Can't listen and throw?" again the comment wasn't exactly crass but the tone in it seemed to imply more than the words meant.

Kurt could see the muscle in Kristi's jaw tense as she picked up the second ball. She took a deep breath and wound up for another pitch as her face went slack. She focused on only the target, blocking out the noise of the crowd and the voice of the man talking. Winding up, she stopped just as the man called out, trying to interrupt her again.

"Don't choke!" he said with a big smile that turned to a frown just as he finished talking and noticed that she had baited him. "Oh…"

Clang-thump. The ball rocketed into the metal bullseye target with enough force to override the resistance of the latch and drive it back into the back stop. The man dropped into the water while Kurt watched the ball bounce high into the air, spilt along its seam. He tracked it and backed up enough to catch it after it bounced off the side of the building behind him. Once he had it in hand, he stored it in his ring before anyone noticed, then returned to Kristi and Val.

The costume cop was spluttering while hanging off the inside lip of the tank. His mustache was now hanging sideways from his top lip while he switched between laughing and coughing up water. "Lucky shot!" He called out and waved to Kristi while she tossed the third ball back to the helper and waved to the crowd who clapped and laughed as they watched.

Kristi turned her wide eyed and smiling face on Kurt as they stepped aside. "That was fun! I had no idea that he was going to try and taunt me like that and mess up my throw." She was skipping along next to him while holding his hand.

"I didn't expect it either." Val said. "Why did he do it for you and nobody else?"

"Because you're not a kid." Kurt said with a smile. "They want the kids to have fun with all this but ramp it up for teens and adults, especially the ones that talk a big game or are showing off. I have seen them actually move the throwing line back for the 'hotshot' types."

They kept walking along, doing a few more games and activities along the way. Val got a real kick out of the Velcro suit inflatable game and had more than one turn at throwing herself at the wall and trying to stick.

Kristi got into a round of apple bobbing which absolutely soaked her front, leading to some unfortunate consequences from the combination of a light breeze and cold water. She seemed to be completely ignorant of the situation as she came over, apple in hand and taking another bite from it.

"Hey, Kristi. Umm…." Kurt began, trying to figure out how to politely tell her that her nipples were poking through her costume. Fortunately, Val had no such issues.

"Your tits a showing." She said in a casual tone between bites of elephant ear, causing Kristi to look down and flush. She tried to cover herself with one arm while looking around frantically.

"Let's duck in here and see if they have a bathroom so you can change." Kurt offered, pointing to a little bookstore that seemed to cater in both books and some small, handcrafted décor.

They dodged around a family trying to explain to their toddler why they couldn't eat all their candy right away and pushed through the door. Kurt was immediately hit with the smell of old paper as the bell above the door dinged and a few customers looked up. Kristi walked up to the counter meekly and asked the older woman at the register if they had a bathroom, quickly explaining what happened and getting pointed toward the back of the store.

While Kristi was handling her wardrobe emergency, Kurt and Val browsed the shelves, poking around in the different sections and eventually wandering away from each other. Kurt had found a section with several books on metal working and woodworking. He was currently thumbing his way through one of them to see if he wanted it. While he browsed the books, destiny decided to pop in for a chat.

"Anything I can help you fin- Oh." Someone said and he turned to face them when they suddenly cut off. Kurt was staring at a woman who looked familiar, but he didn't quite recognize until she spoke again. She had just turned the corner of the shelf and stopped a few feet from him.

"Oh, i-it's you." She said with a voice full of emotion and Kurt's memory was immediately jogged into him remembering, just before her eyes filled with tears and she began to sniffle very hard while fanning her face with her hand.

"Umm. Hi. Hello." Kurt said while watching her face splotch a little as color rushed into it. "Are you ok? Oof." Kurt's question was followed by a few nods, a sniffle, then her throwing herself into him and hugging him around the chest while she let out a sob.

"Th-tha-thank y-y-you." She forced the words out into his chest. "Thank yo-you s-sss-so mmm-much." Kurt had one hand with a book raised up in the air and awkwardly patted her on the back with his free hand. Naturally, since destiny alone wasn't enough, fate joined the chat when Val chose that moment to pop her head into the aisle.

"Kurt?" She asked while taking in the scene. "Why are you holding a book and a crying woman?"

"Ahhh, umm. It's not what it looks like?" He hedged while the strange woman continued to sob on his chest while he patted her shoulder. A moment later, fate's best friend, fortune, decided that she was sick of being ignored and butted in. `

"Kurt, Val. What's going on here?" Kristi asked.

He turned his head to see she had taken care of her moisture misfortune and was back in her costume but was looking on with her eyebrows knitting together as she surveyed the scene.

"Umm." Kurt began and glanced down to the lady that was only just now getting herself under control. "I, or maybe we, can explain?" he said as the lady just looked up and noticed that new people were now in the aisle with them. Her face began to flush while being blotchy from the crying and she tried hard to fight back her tears.

Sniffling, she finally said something to the trio. "Sorry, but I couldn't help it. You made Liam and Alex so happy." She then looked at Kurt. "Um, mister…"

"Kurt, and this is Kristi and Val, my girlfriends." Kurt answered which made Kristi blush and look away while Val beamed at the woman. Kurt was wondering how his life had gotten so complicated all the sudden.
