My Virtual Girlfriend

Chapter 236: You Actually Live Next Door

Hearing the elevator noise, Chen Yan felt a bit curious.

The residential areas in this high-end apartment were rather spacious, so each floor had only two units.

Chen Yan had moved in a few days ago and had initially planned to bring a small gift to meet his neighbors, foster relationships, and learn about those living nearby.

However, he had tried visiting twice, and no matter if it was night or day, no one was next door. Moreover, he had never bumped into this neighbor when going to or coming from work.

It seemed as if this neighbor always left for the day earlier than Chen Yan and returned later than him every evening.

If it weren't for the occasional change in the state of the windows, he would have suspected that no one lived next door at all.

The soundproofing in this high-end apartment was so good that Chen Yan couldn't hear any noises at all.

Thus, after a few days, Chen Yan still didn't know whether his neighbor was male or female, a couple, or single.

Now, suddenly seeing the elevator stop, Chen Yan couldn't help but wonder, "Could it be my mysterious neighbor appearing?"

With that thought, Chen Yan closed his door and hastened over to the hallway to catch a glimpse of his enigmatic neighbor.

"Ding."

With the clear sound of the elevator, the doors slowly opened.

A girl, who looked around seventeen or eighteen years old, appeared. She wore a pair of black round glasses, and her eyes carried a faint warmth.

She was dressed in a pink fleece jacket, partially zipped to reveal a white sweater underneath.

Perhaps due to her figure, the fleece jacket didn't look bulky on her but instead gave her a lively and pretty appearance of a young girl.

At that moment, the girl was holding a few books, peering out from behind her round glasses toward the exterior of the elevator.

As their gazes met...

For a moment, two startled exclamations echoed in the corridor,

"Nuan Nuan?!"

"Chen, President Chen?"

It was an exceptionally surprising meeting of acquaintances.

Both were somewhat amazed to see each other here.

Just like that, one second, two seconds, the elevator doors slowly closed again, obscuring their view of each other.

Chen Yan and Yang Nuannuan snapped back to their senses, hurrying to press the "open door" button.

Moments later, Yang Nuannuan stepped out from the elevator, the luxurious doors slowly closing behind her before descending.

In the hallway, Chen Yan and Yang Nuannuan stood facing each other, both looking at one another, then for a moment didn't know where to start.

After a pause,

"President Chen, what are you doing here?"

"Nuan Nuan, do you live here?"

Their simultaneous remarks left them momentarily at a loss for words.

Chen Yan scratched his head, calming his surprised emotions, and then took control of the conversation.

He said, "I'll go first. I bought an apartment here a while ago."

Yang Nuannuan covered her mouth in surprise, her beautiful eyes wide as she looked at Chen Yan.

She pointed a slender finger at the door of Chen Yan's apartment.

Chen Yan nodded.

Yang Nuannuan's eyes blinked rapidly, like twinkling stars.

After a moment, she said in her soft and sweet voice, "I live next door to you."

Though Chen Yan had already guessed this when he saw Yang Nuan, he was still a bit astonished and asked, "You live here?"

"But, aren't you a resident on campus?"

"And... isn't President Yang from Magic City?"

Yang Nuannuan shook her head, "I usually live on campus, but if I'm interning at the company, I come back home."

Then, by the stairwell, Yang Nuannuan slowly briefed Chen Yan about her situation with Yang Rou.

Yang Rou was actually a local from Qin Island, who had left for Tiandu in her youth and later switched to Perfect Film Industry in Magic City, while Yang Nuannuan had always studied on Qin Island.

After Yang Rou returned to Qin Island, their home was quite distant from the company and the university, so Yang Rou rented an apartment in this high-end complex as their temporary home.

Yang Nuannuan usually stayed at her university dorm, but if she worked overtime and it was too late to return to school, she would stay at home.

Normally, she would accompany Yang Rou at work until she finished, and then the mother and daughter would walk home together while chatting.

But because she was feeling unwell, she decided to go home and rest earlier.

Then, unexpectedly... she encountered Chen Yan.

After listening to Yang Nuannuan explain everything, Chen Yan finally understood why he never ran into this neighbor.

Because... Yang Rou was a workaholic. She was always the first to arrive at the company and wouldn't return home until midnight.

Even if he had waited from dawn till dusk, it was unlikely he would meet her.

As for Yang Nuannuan, her schedule revolved around her mother's, so Chen Yan couldn't meet her either.

If it weren't for Yang Nuannuan feeling unwell today, Chen Yan might have spent over a year without figuring out who lived next door...

...

While Chen Yan was thinking these thoughts, Yang Nuannuan also lifted her lovely eyes to look at him.

In truth, she wasn't feeling unwell today.

She had sensed something off during a meeting and felt a bit unsettled, so she used feeling unwell as an excuse to come home and rest.

Yet, she hadn't expected, without even reaching home, to encounter Chen Yan, the very source of her disturbance.

Moreover, she now realized that they were neighbors.

For a moment, Yang Nuannuan felt that the world was far too small.

She couldn't help but wonder: could this be fate?

...

Yang Nuannuan believed it was fate, yet Chen Yan, after a bit of thought, considered it a matter of probability.

After all, near Qin Island University, Jinmao Building, and Fenghua Building, there was only this high-end residential area. Given Yang Rou's workaholic nature, in an attempt to save time, it was quite likely she would choose this complex.

Generally, such housing was meant for personal use, so there were only a few units available to rent or sell.

Even if he and Yang Nuannuan, along with Yang Rou, didn't live next door, they would likely be in the same building or complex.

Thus, after clarifying everything, he smiled and chatted briefly with Yang Nuannuan before letting her go home to rest.

Meanwhile, he continued downstairs for a run.

Yang Nuannuan, gentle as ever, nodded at Chen Yan's suggestion and went home.

But once she got home, she placed her books by the entrance and peered through the peephole at Chen Yan.

She watched as Chen Yan stepped into the elevator and descended before snapping back to reality...

He ran a couple of laps downstairs and lightly perspired before catching the elevator back up.

For some reason, while in the hallway, Chen Yan always felt as if someone was watching him.

However, after looking around, he didn't see anyone, so he just assumed it was his imagination.

Returning home, Chen Yan took a shower, then pulled out his smartphone.

This was a new phone Chen Yan had bought during his "God Card" phase.

It was the latest model from Huawei.

He bought this phone not only because he liked it but also to test whether he could operate games on another handset.

The day he brought this new phone home and activated it, Chen Yan found that it also had the "Virtual Girlfriend" game installed.

He checked and discovered the information was exactly the same as on his old phone.

This reassured Chen Yan, showing him that the game was tied to him, not just to the previous phone.

He checked on Yu Qiao Qiao and Lu Man within the app. Both of his virtual girlfriends were busy with their respective tasks.

Lu Man was practicing her acting in front of a mirror, while Yu Qiao Qiao was looking through some documents.

Though he couldn't see what Yu Qiao Qiao was researching through the game, Chen Yan felt... she was probably looking into charity organization matters.

Confirming there was nothing wrong with his girlfriends, Chen Yan opened an app to continue reading a slightly risqué novel.

He had been following this novel recently, deeply moved by its nuanced depiction of emotions, and its boldness added an extra thrill.

The only drawback was that it was somewhat risqué ...

Chen Yan lay on his bed, opened the book, and started reading.

...

Meanwhile, wearing a white nightgown and sitting on her bed, Yang Nuannuan had taken off her glasses.

Without her glasses, the warmth in her appearance lessened, and she looked somewhat more enchanting and aloof, resembling Yang Rou even more.

She sat staring blankly for a while before sighing softly.

Then, with her slender arms, she picked up her laptop, opened the lid, typed in her password to unlock it, and opened a Word document, and started typing briskly...

As she typed, her mind gradually immersed, her clear eyes started heating up, and a thin layer of sweat formed on the tip of her nose...

...

The next day, Chen Yan was "called" awake by the morning sunlight.

Stretching lazily in bed, he got up from his two-and-a-half-meter wide bed and picked up his phone, spotting an unread WeChat message.

He opened WeChat, and the message was from Lu Man: "Are you free today? Would you like to come over to my place?"
