Beast Taming: Slaughter Atlas

Chapter 163: Intervening to Rescue

"The location described in the mission is right here; let's hide over there for the ambush," said Qi Mingyu, pointing to the mountainside below.

Upon hearing this, Gao Ye nodded and then commanded the Wind Winged Sparrow to descend to the mountainside.

After Chu Chen jumped off the back of the Wind Winged Sparrow, he surveyed the surroundings.

Here, the lush forests grew thick, and looking down, the situation at the foot of the mountain was clearly visible.

One had to admit, Qi Mingyu had a good eye; this spot was indeed suitable as an ambush location.

The dense woods could block the detection by flying Guardian Beasts, while they could clearly observe the surrounding situation.

The trading company transported goods by road, using Guardian Beasts to haul the freight.

They had their reasons for sticking to the road; every time they traded, a lot of goods were transported. There were attempts to use space equipment, but the price of space equipment was too high, and its capacity too small to hold much cargo, making that method impractical.

Aerial transport had also been tried, but all attempts ended in failure. The load capacity of flying Guardian Beasts was far inferior to that of land-based ones. Frequent rests were needed during transport, offering no significant time advantage, and the cost of flying Guardian Beasts was relatively high, increasing transport costs invisibly.

Ground transport offered the best cost-performance ratio, primarily because the price of Guardian Beasts was economical. Additionally, their load capacity allowed each transport to carry nearly ten times the cargo of aerial transport. Finally, their endurance was exceptional; Guardian Beasts used for transport required only one or two rests per day, and feeding costs were extremely low, needing only a handful of grass per hundred kilometers.

The five of them sat cross-legged on the grass, resting without much desire for conversation, their gaze fixed on the foot of the mountain.

A moment later, Qi Mingyu suddenly spoke, "They're here, everyone get ready for battle. Gao Ye, have the Wind Winged Sparrow scout around to see if any Iron Wolf Thieves can be found."

The four of them, upon hearing this, summoned their respective Guardian Beasts.

Before long, a convoy arrived at the foot of the mountain, where Chu Chen and others were located. The cargo was transported using metal-constructed carts, and the pullers were Bulldozers.

This was an Elite Level Middle Grade Guardian Beast, top-notch in power and endurance among beasts of the same quality, and not expensive, with considerable Combat Power, favored by trading companies.

There were ten carts, and about twenty personnel in the convoy, half of whom were drivers, with Bulldozers as their Guardian Beasts, while the remaining ten were escorts, all at the Commander Level. The strongest was the convoy leader, Li Mingjie, whose Guardian Beast was a Third Rank Commander Level Forest Poison Python.

At this moment, Li Mingjie was cautiously surveying the surroundings. He raised his right hand, signaling everyone to stop.

"Everyone, stay alert; something's not right here."

"Boss, are you scared by those Iron Wolf Thieves or something? There isn't even a sound of insects or birds here, nothing to worry about," a skinny man said with a laugh.

"Hmph, what do you know? It's exactly because it's too quiet here that we should be vigilant."

Hearing this, everyone realized the truth in the words. Previously, they could hear some insect sounds along the way, but here it was eerily silent as if something had frightened all the creatures away.

While everyone was gazing around warily, a wolf's howl came from the dense forest by the road.

Upon hearing the howl, Li Mingjie's expression became solemn.

He immediately commanded, "Everyone, prepare for battle."

As his words fell, the convoy hurriedly stopped. The drivers freed the Bulldozers from their harnesses, and ten escorts summoned their respective Guardian Beasts.

At this time, a series of human shouts came from the dense forest. Soon, over twenty people emerged from the forest, the leader riding a giant black wolf.

They all wore black robes with wolf-like masks on their faces.

Seeing this, Li Mingjie's face immediately turned gloomy, cursing in his heart, "Unlucky."

He stepped forward and said, trying to maintain his composure, "Are you people from the Iron Wolf Thieves?"

"Correct, didn't expect our Iron Wolf Thieves to be so well-known," the leader said with a laugh.

The people behind the leader also burst out laughing.

"Good sirs of the Iron Wolf Thieves, here are a million Alliance Coins, consider it a treat from me, and please let us through," Li Mingjie said, tossing a pouch of money with a smile.

The leader cast a scornful glance at the money pouch and then coldly said, "You really think we're beggars? A mere million is not enough to placate us."

"We're not making much profit this time; these goods aren't worth much. It's risky for you to rob them," Li Mingjie said sternly.

Upon hearing this, the leader responded coldly, "That's none of your concern. Leave all your belongings, and I'll let you go; otherwise, you'll all be killed."

Hearing these words, Li Mingjie's face grew increasingly grim. If they fled without a fight, the trading company would undoubtedly dismiss them, and no business in the city would hire them.

He gritted his teeth and said, "You should think carefully. If you push us too far, it'll be nothing but mutual destruction."

"Haha, I think you overestimate yourselves. Don't worry, even if the fish die, the net won't break. Brothers, kill them all," the leader said coldly.

The Iron Wolf Thieves collectively cheered and then commanded their Guardian Beasts to charge.

Meanwhile, on the mountainside, Qi Mingyu jumped straight onto the back of the Iron-Back Bear and then called out to Yun Qingqing and the others, "Take action; you two, just follow us and don't run around."

The latter part was directed at Chu Chen and another person.

Chu Chen could only nod helplessly at this.

"I didn't expect this mission to be so confidential, even the trading company didn't know," Zhang Yuyan said gravely.

"That's normal. We only got accurate information before setting out. They have insiders in the city. If too many people know, the news could easily leak," Chu Chen explained with a smile.

The Iron Wolf Thieves were formidable. As soon as both sides made contact, Wanli Trading Company's people fell into a disadvantage. If no change occurred, the battle would end within minutes.

At this moment, a resonating cry came from midair, followed by a cyan Wind Blade about a yard long slashing down, directly killing a Third Rank Commander Level Guardian Beast.

"Not good, the opponent has reinforcements, be careful, everyone," the leader shouted.

Upon seeing this, Li Mingjie immediately showed a look of joy, waving his hand to encourage those behind him, "Brothers, hold on, our reinforcements have arrived."

As soon as he finished speaking, Chu Chen and the others had already charged down the mountain.

Qi Mingyu was exceptionally brave, charging into the battlefield riding the Iron-Backed Giant Bear.

The Iron-Backed Giant Bear was massive in size, with thick skin and flesh; ordinary attacks couldn't even break through its Defense. It was just like a heavy tank, rampaging across the battlefield, stirring it into chaos instantly.

The Wind Winged Sparrow's attack targets were very clear, focusing on the Guardian Beasts with lower strength, killing one with every strike.

The Thorn Vine Demon then released several vines to ensnare those Guardian Beasts, creating opportunities for the Iron-Backed Giant Bear and the Wind Winged Sparrow to attack.
