The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 55: Outsmarting Oneself

Immortal City had temporarily stabilized.

A pair of eyes watched this scene in the darkness.

"I wonder how long you can last without the sun?"

The Heavenly Dog thought, taking pleasure in their misfortune.

It didn't care about other creatures, as long as it absorbed the power of the sun, its demonic power would greatly increase, and soon, it would be able to fly out of this world.

"I wonder if the suns in other worlds are also this delicious."

The Heavenly Dog thought, licking its lips unintentionally.

It turned around, about to leave, when suddenly it felt a strange presence in the air behind it.

"Hmm?"

The Heavenly Dog turned around to look.

As an incarnation of darkness, nothing could escape its sight in the dark, but when it turned, there was nothing there.

"An illusion?"

The Heavenly Dog thought and turned to leave.

Under the dim starlight, a strange shadow appeared behind it, seemingly covering its mouth to suppress a laugh.

The oblivious Heavenly Dog reached a safe place, performed a spell, and jumped into its own world.

This was a world of clear black and white, other than white, there were countless shadows.

These shadows were all Shadows, to be precise, this was the world of Shadows.

The Heavenly Dog proceeded, encountering many shadows along the way.

"Minions, your Great King has returned."

The Heavenly Dog bellowed, and the shadows, seeing him, all ran away in fright.

"Forty thousand years have not returned, and these guys are still so timid."

The Heavenly Dog laughed loudly.

It had been forty thousand years since he last absorbed a sun and returned here.

In this world of black and white, shadows were constantly fighting, utterly boring—if it weren't for the fact that this was the only place where it could comfortably absorb the sun, the Heavenly Dog wouldn't want to come back at all.

He returned to his palace.

The palace in the black and white world was naturally black, made of shadows that had lost their masters, each brick and tile was a lost shadow.

The Heavenly Dog noticed that the palace guards had changed.

The previous guards were all dog-like shadows, but now—they looked more like monkeys.

"Why have they all turned into monkeys?"

Seeing that the guards on the road were all monkeys, the Heavenly Dog couldn't help but feel puzzled.

Fortunately, he was the king of this world, and all the shadows in the Shadow World would obey his orders, no matter what kind of shadows they were, be it monkeys or chickens, they were essentially shadows.

The Heavenly Dog had already summoned these monkey shadows for tasks.

They were very efficient, and the Heavenly Dog was very satisfied, intending to continue to have them help next time.

The Heavenly Dog entered the palace surrounded by monkey guards.

He planned to digest the sun in the palace, and after digestion, he would become very, very strong—even disregarding the Buddha Beads.

"That guy always uses me and thinks I'm foolish; this time, I must make him regret it."

The Heavenly Dog thought so.

Inside the palace, pairs of shadows were patrolling.

"These are also little monkeys?"

The Heavenly Dog couldn't help but be curious, he walked past, and the shadows saluted him.

Suddenly, the Heavenly Dog stopped.

He had to stop.

Because he saw his own statue in the palace had also turned into a monkey.

"Who did this, who did this!"

The Heavenly Dog was furious.

A thin shadow walked out from the depths of the palace.

All the shadows, seeing him, knelt on the ground, their foreheads touching the floor, not daring to move a muscle.

The Heavenly Dog was shocked: "Who are you?"

The shadow stopped.

"Did you send my guards out of this world to cause trouble?"

He asked,

"What 'your guards.'"

Heavenly Dog became furious: "This whole world belongs to me!"

"Yours?"

The slender Shadow began to grow taller: "Who do you think you are?"

Heavenly Dog got incredibly angry: "And who are you?"

It has been forty thousand years since my return. How did such a strange shadow suddenly appear in this world?

Unable to bear it, Heavenly Dog wanted to devour the Shadow. But just as it was about to act, it saw the Shadow suddenly pull out a Long Stick and swung it powerfully. Before Heavenly Dog could react, it was struck and sent flying.

After being knocked away, Heavenly Dog steadied itself and looked at Sun Wukong: "Who exactly are you?"

It had never been harmed in this world before.

During its absence, how could such a terrifying shadow have emerged?

The Shadow gradually moved forward.

Unconsciously, Heavenly Dog took a step back.

However, after retreating one step, it realized the cowardice in its heart.

This realization made Heavenly Dog even more furious; it firmly stood its ground, determined not to be cowed.

The Shadow moved closer, its aura making other shadows tremble with fear.

It was too domineering; hardly anyone dared to block its path.

Heavenly Dog's expression gradually became solemn.

"It's you..."

It slowly recognized the Long Stick in the opponent's hand as identical to Sun Wukong's.

Long Stick, Monkey Demon—Heavenly Dog barely thought deeply; it immediately leaped into the void, trying to leave this world.

But it was not as fast as the Long Stick. Before Heavenly Dog could escape, the Long Stick harshly hit its behind, terrifying Heavenly Dog into a frenzied flight.

The creature hiding within its shadow also tried to run but was grabbed and revealed by the Shadow.

It turned out to be another shadow.

The Shadow Demon from Shouma Country.

After being caught by Sun Wukong, it was quickly subdued, following Heavenly Dog to investigate the whereabouts of the Buddha Beads for Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong believed that Heavenly Dog would surely look for the Buddha Beads.

If the Shadow Demon lost track of Heavenly Dog, the mission would fail.

It anxiously tried to escape from the Shadow's grasp but soon stopped.

It realized the identity of the Shadow.

"The Buddha Beads are in Beishan."

The Shadow said, then released the Shadow Demon.

The Shadow Demon recovered and immediately returned to the real world.

It informed Sun Wukong of the direction of the Buddha Beads.

"Beishan?"

Sun Wukong slightly frowned: "Who told you?"

The Shadow Demon honestly answered.

"My Shadow?"

Upon hearing this, Sun Wukong furrowed his brows.

Standing next to him, Immortal Zhenyuan sighed: "My wise junior brother, even his shadow has become enlightened."

Sun Wukong didn't know whether this was good or bad.

But if it was his own shadow, then it should very well know what should and should not be done.

Upon receiving the news, Sun Wukong immediately transformed into a golden light and flew towards Beishan.

He searched Beishan for three days through the words of the Shadow Demon and finally found a Monk.

The Monk lived reclusively in the mountains, guarding a dilapidated temple.

Upon seeing Sun Wukong appear at the temple, the Monk pressed his palms together and sighed "Amitabha."

"How did you find me?"

The Monk stood up and asked.

He knew that Sun Wukong possessed Eyes of Golden Flame, but it was almost ineffective against him because he had already discarded the mortal body of the Buddha Beads and reincarnated as a human; his current body was human.

"Can your Eyes of Golden Flame also see the past life?"

The Monk asked.

"No need to worry."

Sun Wukong sneered.

"You think you're clever, but you missed one thing—I found you because this world has no other Monks."
