The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 44: Tears of Gratitude

Trees are one of the most ancient forms of life.

Sun Wukong looked up at the sky where the Light Tree swayed in the night sky, dreamlike and illusory.

Its light fell upon the ground, awakening the sleeping people of Shouma Country.

"What is that?"

They walked to the window and gazed at the Light Tree in the sky.

"The Radiant Treasure Tree."

Some called out its name.

They had heard of the legend since they were children.

No one had ever seen the Radiant Treasure Tree, but upon seeing the Light Tree, the yearning in their hearts told them it was indeed the Radiant Treasure Tree.

Inside that tree were their Shadows.

This was a resonance carved into their souls.

"You really did it."

Someone said behind Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong turned around to see the gathered civil and military officials.

"It wasn't difficult,"

He told the Emperor of Shouma.

The Light Tree was created by him using the characters of Heavenly Dao; it was not more complicated than the Wanling Tree. Sun Wukong could simulate Heavenly Dao with the tree, so naturally, he could create the Radiant Treasure Tree.

The Radiant Treasure Tree was the key to the space where the Shadows resided.

"How do we retrieve our Shadows?"

The Emperor looked at the Light Tree, his eyes sparkling with light.

"There's no choice but to go in and get them."

Sun Wukong replied, "The Immortal Law on your bodies has turned into a curse, perhaps because the Shadows have undergone some kind of mutation."

He warned the Emperor that retrieving the Shadows from the space opened by the Radiant Treasure Tree would certainly entail danger.

The Emperor frowned.

"Can the immortal accompany us inside?"

He asked.

"...I cannot."

Sun Wukong shook his head; he very much wanted to, but he needed to stay outside to maintain the form of the Radiant Treasure Tree.

The Emperor looked at Sun Wukong.

Could this person truly be trusted?

A flicker of unease crossed his mind.

But this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and if they missed it, they might never be able to lift the curse.

"We can only trust him."

The Emperor ultimately chose to trust.

He didn't know if there were traps inside the tree, but still, let Sun Wukong open the passage.

Under Sun Wukong's guidance, the Light Tree's vast canopy unfolded.

Leaves of light fluttered down from the treetops, scattering profusely on the ground and transforming into circles of light one after another.

Sun Wukong's voice rang out: "Go in!"

The Emperor was the first to step forward, vanishing into the circle of light.

The surrounding Military Officers followed suit without hesitation.

As the flames flickered, only Sun Wukong and some civil officials remained under the tree.

The circles of light disappeared.

"Why did they disappear?"

A civil official asked.

"The Radiant Treasure Tree can only transport that many people."

Sun Wukong answered, "Whether the curse can be lifted depends on them now."

The civil officials looked uneasy.

At that moment, Immortal Zhenyuan stepped forward.

He took out a jug of wine from his sleeve and said, "Little brother, the Prime Minister just gave me a jug of wine; let's drink it."

Sun Wukong nodded.

Ignoring the civil officials around them, the two sat down and drank.

"What kind of danger lies inside?"

Immortal Zhenyuan asked.

"I haven't been inside; I don't know."

Sun Wukong answered.

Immortal Zhenyuan laughed, "Perhaps the Shadows have become spirits."

Sun Wukong smiled and with a gesture, a book appeared in his hand.

"What is this?"

Immortal Zhenyuan asked.

"They'll still take a while to come out."

Sun Wukong, with a drink in one hand and a book in the other, said, "I'd like to read."

While maintaining the Light Tree, he still had the leisure to read books.

Immortal Zhenyuan was somewhat helpless, and after finishing his drink, he felt bored and began to meditate with his eyes closed.

Without restoring his immortal power, he always felt uneasy.

Cultivation could bring peace to his mind.

Time flew by, and just when the civil officials of Shouma Country were dozing off, the Light Tree suddenly began to sway violently.

A roaring sound came from within the Light Tree, getting closer and closer.

"It's coming out."

Sun Wukong put down the book in his hands and turned to look.

Immortal Zhenyuan stopped meditating and, along with the civil officials, turned their gaze towards the Light Tree.

A flame appeared on the Light Tree, as if igniting it, spreading rapidly, and in an instant, the entire tree was ablaze.

With a "boom," the treetop of the Light Tree suddenly burst, and a fierce light obscured the sky; then, pitch-black objects surged out of the Light Tree, flying in all directions like a rain of arrows.

Those pitch-black objects were Shadows.

One of the Shadows flew right over Immortal Zhenyuan's head, 'snap' it rushed into a civil official beside him, and immediately after, a black shadow appeared beneath his feet.

The civil official was stunned for a moment, then ecstatically knelt on the ground, caressing his own shadow.

"My shadow, my shadow has returned!"

"My shadow has returned, too!"

Following that, the other civil officials also began to exclaim in surprise.

Shadows streaked across the sky, flew over the Imperial Palace, and covered the whole of Shouma Country, with exclamations of surprise arising from the entire City.

"Shadows, these are shadows!"

"The Curse is gone!"

"I can finally see myself!"

Countless shouts tore through the darkness, and sounds of celebration were endless.

"They've broken the Curse."

Immortal Zhenyuan, hearing these voices, couldn't help but smile.

He was about to congratulate Sun Wukong but noticed his expression was somewhat solemn.

"Elder brother, what's wrong?"

Immortal Zhenyuan asked.

Sun Wukong looked at the treetop: "They have not broken the Curse yet."

Immortal Zhenyuan followed his gaze and felt a chill down his back.

Above the Light Tree, a gigantic black fog gradually took shape, forming a human figure.

"What is that thing?"

Immortal Zhenyuan questioned.

"Shadow Spirit."

Sun Wukong answered.

"Shadows can really become spirits!"

Immortal Zhenyuan never imagined that his casual remark would actually come true.

He watched as the Shadow Spirit took shape, and after it formed, the Emperor of Shouma Country and his Military Officers also emerged battered from within the tree.

"We can't let this monster devour shadows again!"

The Emperor of Shouma shouted, leading the Military Officers to stand in formation against the dark shadows.

For a moment, the sky flashed with brilliance as the people of Shouma desperately attacked the dark shadows.

Their attempt was formidable, but no matter how they attacked, the shadows shattered only to reform again.

Sun Wukong watched with a solemn expression for a while, then gradually regained his calm.

Immortal Zhenyuan also heaved a sigh of relief.

"Seems to be no big deal."

He said.

The Shadow Spirit's form changed a thousand times and seemed unaffected by any Immortal Law; however, its attack methods were not many.

In addition to encircling others with darkness, the Shadow Spirit could also devour others' shadows to control them, but beyond this, there were no more sophisticated attacks.

"Elder brother."

Immortal Zhenyuan looked at Sun Wukong: "This Shadow Spirit is a treasure, but it doesn't yet know how to fight."

Sun Wukong nodded, deciding to make his move.

He uttered a spell, the Tree of Brilliance exploded violently, turning into countless Light Talismans that densely surrounded the Shadow Spirit.

The Runes locked the Shadow Spirit, transforming it into a small ball that landed in his hand.

The Shadow Spirit, which the Emperor of Shouma had racked his brains to try to eradicate, was casually sealed by Sun Wukong.

The Emperor, leading his Military Officers, descended to the ground, looking at Sun Wukong with complex eyes.

They observed Sun Wukong for a good while, and then they knelt to the ground.

"Great Immortal, the people of Shouma are grateful beyond words."

The Emperor said.
