The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 38: Immortal

Sun Wukong stood under an old locust tree.

After a long time, a gust of wind blew through the treetops of the old locust tree, as if carrying a sigh.

"How did you find me?"

The old locust tree asked.

"No one can escape my eyes."

Sun Wukong said, "You are the Mountain God here."

His golden eyes seemed as if they could see through everything.

A pair of eyes appeared on the old locust tree, gazing at the creatures following behind Sun Wukong.

The creatures looked at him warily, as if on guard.

"Are they your subordinates?"

The old locust tree asked.

"No."

Sun Wukong shook his head: "They are people who came to assassinate me."

"It doesn't look that way."

The old locust tree laughed, noting the reverence for Sun Wukong in the creatures' expressions; how could they be assassins.

However, Sun Wukong was not lying.

Not long ago, these creatures sought to assassinate him, but on their way here, Sun Wukong preached some Tao to them, and now they have all changed their attitudes.

"Old man, the Immortal is seeking you."

The creatures said, "Stop verbalizing, just agree."

"What are you looking for me for?"

The old locust tree asked Sun Wukong.

"I want to change the cosmic order and needed to inform you."

Sun Wukong said.

He intended to move the Sun, naturally he had to gain the agreement of the creatures on the ground to relocate.

And to relocate the creatures, the most effective way was to inform the Mountain Gods everywhere.

They are the controllers of their respective lands, capable of notifying the creatures in the mountains.

"So it is."

The old locust tree nodded after hearing this: "It's a good idea, but the Demon Beasts aren't that simple."

In the past, there were people who wanted to move the Sun to the center of the world, but the Demon Beasts disagreed.

"The Demon Beasts will be handled by me."

Sun Wukong said: "You just need to agree."

"If you can deal with the Demon Beasts, naturally I will cooperate."

The old locust tree replied.

Having received agreement, Sun Wukong bowed his thanks.

"I will have to visit other Mountain Gods, so I'll take my leave now."

He said, then turned and left.

The old locust tree watched him leave, then suddenly called out, "Immortal, wait a moment."

Sun Wukong stopped.

"What else is there?"

He turned and asked.

"To the southwest there is a Water Moon Temple, and a Great Divine Power Moon Immortal resides there, who has good relations with all Mountain Gods."

The old locust tree said, "If you can persuade him, then you will be able to convince the other Mountain Gods."

"Much obliged."

Sun Wukong bowed again and departed.

Soon after, Sun Wukong found the Water Moon Cave Heaven.

The gatekeeping boy hurried into the Daoist Temple, hustled along the winding, layered cobblestone roads, took a big turn behind the mountain, and found the Moon Immortal who was playing the guqin.

"Immortal."

The boy, panting, bowed and said, "An Immortal has come to visit from outside."

"Immortal?"

The Moon Immortal's music stopped abruptly, then resumed as before.

"In this world, apart from me, where else can you find an Immortal?"

A hint of displeasure flashed across his brow as he spoke, "That person doesn't know his place, send him away."

In this world, only he has cultivated a Heavenly Immortal body, with unfathomable Mana.

The boy, a little anxious, said, "Immortal, he truly is an Immortal."

"Don't want to see him!"

The Moon Immortal shook his head, "If he really is an Immortal, he can find me at any time."

As soon as his voice fell, a voice rang out behind him.

"Is that really the case?"

The Moon Immortal was startled and turned to look, where a stranger stood behind him.

Sun Wukong unleashed his immortal power and said, "Are you the Moon Immortal?"

The Moon Immortal, unable to believe his eyes, widened them upon seeing the Immortal Light blossoming behind Sun Wukong.

That Immortal Light was vast and majestic, possessing unimaginable strength, inspiring one to worship devoutly.

The Moon Immortal immediately rose to his feet, shaking as he clasped his hands in salute, saying, "I am blind not to recognize Tai Mountain, please forgive me, immortal."

Sun Wukong shook his head: "No matter."

He said, "I have a favor to ask of you."

"Certainly."

The Moon Immortal immediately replied, "Seeing the immortal today is a fortunate event for me over three lifetimes, whatever you need, just command!"

Sun Wukong was taken aback.

Why is this guy so eager?

He scrutinized the Moon Immortal and suddenly understood.

It wasn't that the Moon Immortal was eager, but with higher cultivation, he understood the strength more clearly.

Ordinary people, upon seeing Sun Wukong's Immortal Light, can only perceive his strength, but the Moon Immortal could see something more important — the Heavenly Dao.

He could see it, yet Sun Wukong did not expose it.

He told the Moon Immortal his purpose, and the Moon Immortal immediately agreed.

"Disciples, immediately send out invitations for me, calling for a gathering of Mountain Gods tomorrow."

The Moon Immortal spoke to his disciples, and they went forth to send out the invitations.

"It's getting late, if the immortal doesn't mind, you could stay the night at the temple."

The Moon Immortal said to Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong nodded and stayed at the Water Moon Temple, discussing the path of cultivation with the Moon Immortal and the creatures that accompanied him throughout the night.

The audience listened enraptured till dawn before dispersing.

With the rise of dawn, streaks of light appeared in the sky.

First, a Phoenix landed in front of the Water Moon Temple, transforming into a woman, followed by a Qilin descending from the heavens, turning into a young man.

"Little sister, long time no see."

The young man said to the woman.

The woman smiled and nodded, "I wonder why Moon Immortal has summoned us this time?"

"We'll know soon enough."

The young man raised his head as more Mountain Gods descended.

By just the morning, over a hundred Mountain Gods had arrived at the Water Moon Temple.

They gathered in the hall, surrounding the Moon Immortal.

"I encountered an Immortal last night, and I was beyond delighted."

The Moon Immortal shared the event involving Sun Wukong with the Mountain Gods.

The Mountain Gods were abuzz with discussion, all expressing disbelief.

"Moon Immortal, is there really such a person in the world?"

A bird Mountain God asked.

"Truly, there is."

The Moon Immortal nodded.

"There's an old saying, 'Hear the Tao in the morning, and one can die content in the evening.'"

The Moon Immortal expressed regret to them, "I originally thought hearing the Tao was enough to be content. However, after listening to the Immortal's teachings last night, its immeasurable depth made me realize how profound the Tao is, beyond our imagination."

The Mountain Gods marveled in astonishment.

"If he is so formidable, why hasn't he shown himself?"

The Phoenix spoke.

"The Immortal appeared early in the morning."

The Moon Immortal said, "He has been here all along; it's just that none of you noticed him."

The Mountain Gods were startled, then looked around, only to find a stranger sitting at the head of the table, drinking tea.

After seeing him, the Mountain Gods were shocked to remember that they had seen this man as soon as they entered.

The man had been sitting there the whole time.

But having seen him once, they had forgotten him; even though he was right there, they hadn't taken note.

"What kind of spell is this!"

The Mountain Gods came to their senses, all of them pale.

To have seen and yet forgotten, such a method was unheard of to them.

"We have seen the Immortal!"

The Mountain Gods involuntarily saluted Sun Wukong.

"Rise, all of you."

Sun Wukong gestured for everyone to get up and said, "The matter this time is quite urgent, but I still need all of you to..."

Before his words fell, the sky suddenly darkened.

It was still midday; the sky shouldn't grow dim.

A bad premonition surged in Sun Wukong's heart.
