The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 37: The Monk from Chang'an

The elderly monk with a face full of wrinkles set foot upon the land of Huaguo Mountain.

"Guang Hui elder, you've finally come."

A group of monks greeted him with a bow, saying, "If you had not come sooner, I'm afraid it would have been too late."

"Why?"

Elder Guang Hui asked, "Does the Monkey King not like monks?"

"Not at all." The monks replied with a smile: "The Monkey King is friendly to monks, but there are many troublesome demons in Huaguo Mountain, and they have started to restrict outsiders from entering. If someone is not a highly skilled craftsman or a merchant, they might not be able to come here in the future."

"I see."

The elder felt relieved.

He looked around at the demons crowding the port.

"Well, well."

Guang Hui murmured a phrase, pressing his palms together: "It's true that the demons here possess no aura of slaughter."

"Elder."

The monks helped him with his luggage, saying, "Let's get you something to eat, then we'll make further arrangements."

"Very well."

Guang Hui followed the monks into Liufu Island.

Demons bustled back and forth on Liufu Island; groups of monks passed by them without causing any surprise.

For more than twenty years, monks have actually been common sights in Huaguo Mountain.

There was an abundance of vegetarian options here, and many monks who stayed did not wish to leave.

Several female demons walked past elder Guang Hui.

"I've heard some phoenixes are even larger than mountains, with the Great King's abilities, he could capture a phoenix, allow it to carry our Royal City on its back, roaming the skies everywhere. Wouldn't that be more convenient?"

Guang Hui overheard the female demon speaking, and he couldn't help but stop in his tracks, turning to look at the backs of the female demons.

"What are they talking about?"

Guang Hui asked.

The monks replied, "They're talking about the Royal City, elder, please don't mind them."

The monks led Guang Hui into a restaurant and ordered some vegetarian dishes.

Guang Hui noticed that at the next table, a group of demons was enjoying meat dishes.

"There's meat here?"

Guang Hui frowned.

"Huaguo Mountain primarily offers vegetarian food, but there is meat available too."

The monks replied.

The disputes between humans and demons concerning food had continued for a long time without a resolution.

Fortunately, not every animal can become a spirit; under the same lifespan and due to limited capabilities, animals unable to unlock spiritual wisdom also couldn't awaken to intelligence—The demons of Huaguo Mountain also needed to eat meat; although the Monkey King prohibited cannibalism, he did not ban meat-eating.

While not prohibited, the demons were also not allowed to harm their own kin, leading them to find a compromise.

And that was the animals that had not awakened to spiritual wisdom.

"Most of these meat dishes are from animals raised by humans, or they come from the Kingdom of Aolai."

The monks said.

"I see."

Guang Hui sighed: "This is the natural order of the universe."

Even Buddha cannot change this order of the universe, so how could the Monkey King?

The dishes were served at the restaurant, and the monks began to eat.

"Truly a unrivaled delicacy of the mortal world."

Guang Hui was full of praise.

The monks laughed and said, "Elder, don't you agree that Huaguo Mountain's oil extraction and cooking techniques far surpass those of Chang'an?"

Guang Hui nodded; the abundant produce of Huaguo Mountain truly lived up to its reputation.

While the monks were eating, Guang Hui suddenly felt a surge of chill run down his back.

He turned his head and saw a Bear Demon accompanied by two demons entering the restaurant.

"Such powerful dark aura!"

The old monk became vigilant, as this demon's mana was extraordinary; the heavy aura of darkness around it indicated unknown amounts of wicked deeds.

Fortunately, the Bear Demon passed by them directly and sat down at a nearby table.

"Congratulations, Great King, congratulations, tomorrow onwards you will be the General of Huaguo Mountain!"

The Wolf Demon and Weasel Demon toasted the Bear Demon King.

"Stop calling me Great King."

The Bear Demon King said contentedly, "There are only two Kings of Huaguo Mountain."

He took a sip of wine and said, "Now that I've become a General, why does the Deer Demon sister still not like me?"

"Great… General may not know, the female demons of Huaguo Mountain are quite particular."

The Wolf Demon said, "They don't like barbaric demons; when you were acting as Demon King, you were stained with much foul energy, so naturally the Deer Demon does not like that."

"I see."

The Bear Demon King suddenly realized that what the Deer Demon sister dislikes about him is that he's not clean enough.

That makes sense; the Deer Demon sister loves beauty and certainly prefers clean demons.

"Yesterday, I saw the Great King and noticed him swirling with pure aura." The Bear Demon King sighed, "What should I do to become just like him?"

"There's no need for the Great… General to worry."

The Weasel Demon said, "Occasionally some demons commit evil deeds on Huaguo Mountain. As the General now responsible for protecting Huaguo Mountain, preserving the demon state, it will only take less than a century for the foul energy to dissipate, replaced by a body filled with pure aura."

"That's right," the Wolf Demon added: "By then, with the General's body filled with pure aura, achieving the Immortal Dao is not impossible."

"Is there such a good thing?"

The Bear Demon King was instantly overjoyed, "Then I must work really hard."

Hearing this, Guang Hui the elder couldn't help but nod in agreement.

That Sun Wukong, the renowned Wise Monkey, indeed has the capacity to convert a violent devil to embrace good.

"I want to meet with the Monkey King."

After filling his stomach, Guang Hui instructed the monks, "You must secure an audience with the Monkey King for me."

However, it took a few days before Sun Wukong had the time to meet him.

Guang Hui met Sun Wukong in Shuilian Cave.

At first sight of him, Guang Hui felt as though he saw a Golden Lotus blooming behind Sun Wukong.

"The Monkey King possesses Buddhist nature."

Thinking so, Guang Hui found Sun Wukong to be suffused with merit, his aura pure, closely aligned with the Buddhist faith.

However, despite this closeness, Guang Hui felt that Sun Wukong's Buddhist nature was different from his own.

Sun Wukong asked, "Where does the revered monk hail from?"

"I have journeyed here from Chang'an of the Han Dynasty."

Guang Hui bowed respectfully, "I implore the Monkey King to grant me a dwelling place."

"To grant a dwelling place is not hard."

Sun Wukong observed Guang Hui carefully.

This was an accomplished monk with deep knowledge in Buddhist Law; perhaps even the Demon King might not defeat him.

After this monk arrived at Huaguo Mountain, all the other monks naturally recognized him as their leader.

"I'll build you a temple, so you can carry on with your cultivation and contemplate the Buddhist Law in peace," Sun Wukong decided and declared, "But I have a condition; you must not teach Buddhist Law to the demons here, disturbing the tranquility of Huaguo Mountain."

"Amitabha Buddha..."

Guang Hui put his palms together and shook his head, "How could our teaching of the Buddhist Law disturb the peace of Huaguo Mountain?"

Sun Wukong just looked at him without a word.

Guang Hui noticed his gaze turning colder and realized he had to agree.

"There's no need for the Monkey King to worry."

Guang Hui bowed and said, "I, the humble monk, will honor this promise."

"That's good."

Sun Wukong then instructed the four elder monkeys to arrange for the building of the temple.

His expression softened as he said, "Since the revered monk will settle in Huaguo Mountain, feel free to visit Shuilian Cave and share with me the Buddhist Law."

Guang Hui's heart leapt for joy, but when he looked up, he saw a look of urgency on Ao Luan's face.

"Brother!" Ao Luan called out loudly, "You must not associate with these bald monks!"

Sun Wukong looked at Ao Luan curiously; he needed to understand the Buddhist faith in order to overcome it.

But why was Ao Luan reacting so strongly?
