The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 354: Heavenly Emperor Statue

Late at night, Emperor Ziwei stood atop the Peak of Penglai.

"Great Emperor, the night is deep. Why haven't you rested yet?"

An attendant came over to ask.

"I can't sleep."

Emperor Ziwei gazed at the sky. Ever since leaving the Heavenly Palace, he had more time on his hands than he knew what to do with.

"I feel uneasy."

Emperor Ziwei said, "It seems like something will happen tonight."

His gaze fixed on an Emperor Star.

That was the Emperor Star evolved from the fate of Sun Wukong.

The Emperor Star did not shine; it was shrouded in a mist, and though it occupied the Heavenly Emperor's position, it lacked the brilliance a Heavenly Emperor should possess.

However, at this moment, the Emperor Star began to stir, as if something was about to happen.

What could it be?

Emperor Ziwei silently watched the sky.

Beneath the night sky, men and women, young and old, ran through the wilderness.

"Run faster!"

Several Daoist nuns urged loudly, "A moment slower, and those man-eating demons will catch up!"

Upon hearing 'man-eating demons,' the men and women, old and young, ran even faster.

They ran frantically until they took refuge in a dilapidated Three Pure Ones Taoist Temple.

"We are safe here under the protection of the Three Pure Ones."

The Daoist nuns set up a Barrier inside the temple and crouched down, taking deep breaths of relief.

The people, having narrowly survived disaster, started to rest, panting for air.

Just then, a young Daoist nun suddenly noticed an old woman beside her bringing out a statue to pray.

"Monkey Image!"

Upon seeing the statue clearly, the young Daoist nun's face turned pale.

She snatched the statue and threw it onto the ground.

"How dare you carry this devil's image!"

The Daoist nun was furious. "This is a devil, and he is the one causing great chaos in the world!"

The other Daoist nuns also turned to look.

Ever since Sun Wukong seized the position of the Heavenly Emperor, the demons in various places became unbounded and wreaked havoc without restraint.

Nearby villagers were almost entirely devoured by demons.

"This devil deserves a thousand deaths, and yet you dare to carry its image with you!"

The young Daoist nun blamed the old woman, "By doing this, if you anger the Three Pure Ones and they no longer protect us, can you bear the responsibility?"

"Sinful, so sinful..."

The old woman trembled as she picked up the wooden carving.

It was the idol she had worshipped for decades; how could she treat it like this?

The old woman carefully wiped the idol clean.

"Did you not hear what I said?"

The Daoist nun was very angry and once again knocked the idol to the ground, preparing to crush it.

The old woman threw herself in front of it.

"Without the Wise Monkey, you wouldn't even be here!"

She said tremblingly.

"What?"

The Daoist nun was taken aback.

"Without the agricultural techniques popularized by the Wise Monkey, your father would have abandoned you, and you would have never had the chance to be taken in as a disciple by the Daoist temple," the old woman said.

"Nonsense!"

The Daoist nun's face turned beet red in anger.

"I'm not talking nonsense."

Holding the wooden carving, the old woman stood up and said, "Think about how many children in the village were nourished by the Wise Monkey; even your Daoist temple thrived because of the rice seeds, didn't it?"

"You..."

The Daoist nun was at a loss for words.

She had heard from her Grandmaster that without the rice seeds, their temple would not have attracted much worship.

"Even if what you're saying is correct."

The Daoist nun suppressed her anger: "Right now, the Three Realms are in chaos, and isn't that all created by that devil's own doing!"

"This chaos in the Three Realms, what has it to do with the Wise Monkey?"

The elder woman spoke tremulously, "All the Immortals are in the Heavenly Palace, why haven't they come to help us?"

"They..."

The Taoist nun was momentarily at a loss for words.

"Those Immortals originally stayed in the heavens, one day for them is like a year for us, have they ever cared for us?"

The elder woman, clutching the wooden sculpture, walked alone towards the outside of the Daoist Temple.

Everyone was stunned.

The Taoist nuns looked at each other, thinking of the wooden sculpture she held, yet not a single one stopped her.

But shortly after the elder woman left the Daoist Temple, a young nun still couldn't bury her conscience and ran out.

"I'll go bring her back."

She ran out of the Daoist Temple and eventually found the elder woman under a nearby tree.

The elder woman was placing the wooden sculpture on a rock and preparing to bow her head to it.

"You..."

The nun was stunned.

"Even without the Wise Monkey, the monsters that are meant to come will still come."

The elder woman seemed to be aware of the nun's presence and spoke, "When I was young, my parents were devoured by monsters, those monsters were killed by your Grandmaster, but soon after, your Grandmaster was eaten by monsters as well."

"Monsters appear time and again, are killed time and again, but every ten or twenty years, new monsters will arise."

The elder woman turned her head, saying, "Girl, wherever there are humans in this world, monsters will appear, how can they be eradicated?"

The nun did not know how to answer.

"I've known since I was a child that Immortals can't help us."

The elder woman spoke, "The only one who can eradicate monsters is the Wise Monkey."

The nun was somewhat astonished.

"Only he is thinking of how to educate monsters."

The elder woman said, "I don't hate him, even if I die here, who knows, maybe in my next life I'll be born into a Three Realms without monsters."

"Go back."

She refused the nun's rescue.

The nun hesitated for a moment, but in that brief instant, a monster wind that blotted out the sky descended from above.

"I've found two more."

In the monster wind, two giant eyes appeared.

"The old one we'll take back to make a bone soup, the young one is still fair-looking, we'll take her back for the Big Brother to marry."

As the two monsters spoke, two enormous hands reached out from the wind, grabbing at the two below.

The elder woman sighed and then closed her eyes.

However, the next moment, a ray of light suddenly shone from the ground, and the monster wind, as if encountering flames, started burning fiercely.

"Waaaah!"

The monster wind echoed with the screams of the monsters.

The elder woman opened her eyes and saw the wooden sculpture in front of her slowly rising.

"Wise, Wise Monkey..."

She trembled as she knelt down, the Wise Monkey had manifested.

"I am the Heavenly Emperor, born in response to the Wanling, and also transforming for the Wanling."

The voice of Sun Wukong resonated from the wooden sculpture, "Henceforth, I shall preach in human form on earth, in front of all, here stands the statue of the Heavenly Emperor."

Amidst the celestial voice, the wooden sculpture began emitting a brilliant glow, transforming into a human-like form.

The elder woman looked at the wooden sculpture, as if seeing a face in the light behind it.

"Heavenly Emperor."

She knelt to the ground, fervently bowing her head.

The nun stared blankly at the light, seeing it clearer, she directly beheld that noble and serene figure.

She had seen the paintings of numerous Immortals and Buddhas, yet none possessed such a demeanor.

Before him, other Immortals seemed just like mortals.

"Heavenly Emperor."

She too knelt down.

All doubts, all angers, at this moment, vanished from her heart.

At nearly the same time, throughout the Four Great Continents, all the statues of the Wise Monkey underwent the same transformation.

In front of each shimmering wooden sculpture, countless people knelt down.

People kneeled, listening to the voice of the Heavenly Emperor.

In Penglai, Emperor Ziwei watched as the Emperor Star in the sky grew bright.

The fog that shrouded it, gradually scattered until it was all but gone.
