The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 304: Kunlun Mirror

The night had deepened, and Sun Wukong stood by the window.

He lifted his eyes to the night sky, as if he could reach out and pluck the stars.

"Great Saint,"

An old Immortal appeared behind him out of thin air.

Sun Wukong turned around, realizing it was Shangqing.

"There's an answer."

Shangqing's words made Sun Wukong's eyes light up.

"You found that Black Lotus?"

He asked.

Out of curiosity about the Black Lotus, he had informed the Jade Emperor about the discovery.

The Jade Emperor had dispatched Shangqing to investigate, and the investigation had lasted for two years.

"Found it."

Shangqing nodded, "That Black Lotus is not a mark, but rather resembles a precursor to a great calamity."

Sun Wukong frowned slightly, "A great calamity?"

"The Great Calamity of the Era,"

Shangqing replied, "The Buddha established the Pure Land, possibly because he discovered it."

The Buddha was beyond birth and destruction, knowing past and future events, and Sun Wukong also thought he should have discovered the Black Lotus earlier.

But Sun Wukong didn't expect the Black Lotus to be linked to the Pure Land.

"Did you ask the Buddha?"

Sun Wukong inquired.

Shangqing nodded, then shook his head.

He had visited the Buddha, but the Buddha had other thoughts and said nothing.

"Of course, these are just speculations."

Shangqing said, "The period of the Great Calamity of the Era is not yet half over, so the Great Saint need not worry excessively."

He turned to walk outside.

"Wait,"

Sun Wukong stopped him, "What should be done if it's a great calamity?"

"One can only meet the calamity head-on,"

Shangqing turned back and said, "This is fate, it cannot be resisted."

He wasn't worried about the great calamity. For the Three Pure Ones, it was already a familiar process.

He thought Sun Wukong shouldn't worry either—Sun Wukong's Dao was steady enough to withstand the great calamity.

But that was only him...

"Day Patrol Deity,"

After Shangqing left, Sun Wukong called for the Day Patrol Deity who was on duty in the Scripture Pavilion.

"Great Saint,"

The Day Patrol Deity, who had heard the previous conversation, appeared somewhat silent.

Sun Wukong looked at him, "How many stayed behind during the last great calamity?"

"No more than ten." The Day Patrol Deity knew what Sun Wukong wanted to ask and said, "Only a few around the Great Saint have the divine skills to withstand it."

Throughout the Wanling Country, apart from Sun Wukong, only Lord Lao Zi of the Great Monad, Master Puti, and Immortal Zhenyuan could withstand the great calamity.

Most of the immortals in the Heavenly Palace wouldn't escape either.

Sun Wukong sighed and waved his hand, "You may go."

"Yes."

The Day Patrol Deity bowed and withdrew.

Sun Wukong thought for a moment and then went to the top floor of the Scripture Pavilion.

On the shelves here were books about ancient events, which he hadn't really looked at because there were other books he needed to read.

"The Great Calamity of the Era, the great calamity..."

Sun Wukong found a book called "World Cycles of the Era" on the shelf.

*"This should be about the great calamity."*

He thought to himself as he picked up the book and began flipping through it.

This book described the Three Realms from their inception to destruction in cycles called eras, each era lasting 129,600 years.

At the beginning of an era, things came into being from nothing, and at the end of an era, things returned to nothingness.

This continuous cycle of beginning and ending achieved the renewal of all things.

"The ebb and flow of life and decay is the Heavenly Dao, beyond the power of change."

This statement at the end of "World Cycles of the Era" made Sun Wukong sigh involuntarily.

After this, it recorded two examples.

Several great divine beings had attempted something daring several great calamities ago, creating a treasure called "Creation" that could prematurely evolve everything in hopes of preventing the cycle of calamity.

The Heavenly Venerate at the time used the treasure to evolve the Three Realms, but fell into an unending sleep and perished during the calamity.

"Creation?"

Sun Wukong frowned slightly.

Unfortunately, the book only had this much information about Creation, whereas the other example was more detailed.

The other example was the Heavenly Palace.

It was the vehicle of the calamity, helping some people to avoid the disaster, though the number it could help was limited, totaling no more than five.

*"Maybe the Heavenly Palace is the starting point."*

Sun Wukong thought, although he had destroyed the Heavenly Palace, it could be repaired in the future, and perhaps a haven against the great calamity could be built.

*"Wait—"*

*"Could it be that the Pure Land was born for the great calamity?"*

Sun Wukong was startled.

If so, it would explain why the Buddha didn't tell Shangqing the truth.

When the great calamity arrived, the Pure Land might be the only refuge.

Sun Wukong squinted his eyes; he couldn't rule out this possibility.

But no matter how—*the great calamity seemed so far off that it shouldn't appear ahead of schedule.*

*"I still need to investigate further..."*

Sun Wukong put the "World Cycles of the Era" back on the shelf.

He looked out the window, and before he knew it, the sky had already brightened after finishing the book.

"Great Saint,"

A shout from outside the Scripture Pavilion came from Zhang Daoling.

Sun Wukong turned and stepped out, unconsciously using Shrinking Ground to appear in front of Zhang Daoling.

"What's the matter?"

He asked.

Zhang Daoling was startled.

"Great Saint, you appear and vanish unpredictably,"

He shook his head, then said, "We have found a method to manage the Immortal Dao."

"Oh?"

Sun Wukong hadn't expected such quick progress, "What method?"

"Great Saint, please follow me,"

Zhang Daoling led the way, bringing Sun Wukong to the Palace of the Polestar of the Heavenly Palace.

In the Palace of the Polestar, the immortals had already gathered, surrounding a mirror and discussing fervently.

"What is that?"

Sun Wukong asked.

"The Kunlun Mirror,"

Zhang Daoling replied.

The Kunlun Mirror was a magical treasure of the Queen Mother, radiating a gentle white light that brought peace and tranquility to the heart. It was said to connect the human realm and the Immortal Realm and traverse time and space.

"The Queen Mother wants to give it to the Great Saint,"

Zhang Daoling said.

Sun Wukong was astonished, "How can that be?"

"Great Saint, don't be quick to refuse,"

Zhang Daoling smiled, "The Kunlun Mirror is a treasure from several great calamities ago and can no longer traverse time and space. It is of little use to the Queen Mother now."

Sun Wukong frowned slightly, "What use does it have?"

"Lord Lao Zi of the Great Monad has refined the Kunlun Mirror anew,"

Zhang Daoling said, "Great Saint, show the Wanling Map to it."

"The Wanling Map?"

Sun Wukong still didn't quite understand, but he approached the Kunlun Mirror and casually drew a Wanling Map.

The Kunlun Mirror showed no reaction.

"Not that one,"

Zhang Daoling immediately said, "It's the original Wanling Map."

"The original?"

Sun Wukong frowned slightly, then looked at the Kunlun Mirror.

Two patterns emerged from his pupils, imprinting onto the mirror's surface. The Kunlun Mirror began to emit light, gradually revealing the Wanling Map.

"Ohhh!"

The immortals watched this scene with excitement.

After a moment, Sun Wukong retrieved the patterns from his eyes.

"What divine skills are these?"

He felt the Kunlun Mirror had copied a part of the Wanling Map's power into itself.

"Is this your method?"

Sun Wukong asked.

The immortals nodded and carefully kept the Kunlun Mirror away.

With the power of the Wanling Map, they could transform the Kunlun Mirror into an immortal artifact to manage the Wanling Immortal Path.

"Great Saint, the Wanling Map must not be damaged,"

Zhang Daoling subsequently said.

If the original Wanling Map were damaged, the effect of the Kunlun Mirror would also vanish.
