The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 229: Persuading the Sweeping Star

"Your writing has been erased?"

Sweeping Star asked while looking at the spotless wall.

"Erased."

Sun Wukong replied.

Sweeping Star reached out and touched the wall, and after finding nothing unusual, she nodded slightly.

"Don't write on the walls anymore."

"Okay."

Sun Wukong watched her leave.

After Sweeping Star left, he turned around, and a butterfly mark emerged on the wall, which then transformed into a halo.

"What a terrifying spell."

Sun Wukong thought as he pulled a book from the halo.

He continued to read.

The books in the Scripture Pavilion were as vast as the stars, encompassing everything, and even included knowledge from before the Great Tribulation.

Although they did not amount to the tens of millions of volumes found in some libraries centuries later—often seven or eight million volumes—they still totaled three hundred thousand.

Excluding those that Sun Wukong already knew or deemed unnecessary to read, he roughly had fifty thousand volumes left to go through.

In comparison to three hundred thousand, fifty thousand seemed a small number.

However, books are not merely a measure of quantity; even ten thousand volumes would take twenty-seven years to read if one read a book a day. Fifty thousand volumes would take over a hundred years.

Sun Wukong couldn't possibly stay here for a hundred years, reading more than one book each day.

He could only make the most of his time and prioritize reading what he wanted to know.

Meanwhile, the notes Sun Wukong had sold earlier had caused quite a stir.

Several Immortals found him.

"Do you want the notes, too?"

Sun Wukong was surprised.

"Yes."

The Immortals nodded, hoping Sun Wukong would compile more notes.

Although all apprentices of the Three Thousand Immortal Paths had passed the trials of the Heavenly Ladder, their aptitudes greatly varied,

and many Immortals lacked experience in teaching disciples; Sun Wukong's notes could perfectly bridge these gaps.

"But I don't understand your Immortal Dao."

Sun Wukong intended to refuse.

But the Immortals didn't care: "We will explain it to you."

They took the initiative to propose sharing their own Immortal Dao with Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong couldn't refuse and had to agree.

For the next two years, in addition to reading, Sun Wukong also wrote notes for the Immortals.

To call them notes would be an understatement; they were more like textbooks.

Over those two years, he organized his insights and compiled dozens of textbooks.

"This guy is truly a genius!"

The Immortals were amazed by the notes.

Some marveled at his speed and even gave him a nickname, 'Speedy Scribbler.'

Sun Wukong himself was extremely perceptive; even without his own knowledge, he often managed to infer from one case to another, creating notes that were concise and easy to understand.

Several Immortals contemplated taking him as a disciple.

Of course, Sun Wukong refused them all.

"I do not seek a master."

Sometimes, when Sweeping Star saw him growing impatient with the Immortals' insistence, she would also come by.

The moment she appeared, the Immortals would shudder and immediately leave.

This made Sun Wukong all the more curious about Sweeping Star's origins.

There weren't many folk tales about Sweeping Star; Sun Wukong had heard various stories from other disciples.

But when he asked the Immortals, they just laughed.

"Where did all those stories come from?"

The Immortals said: "Sweeping Star is born that way."

"Born that way?"

"She was born as Sweeping Star."

The Immortals replied: "The Jade Emperor saw her plight and commanded The Three Pure Ones to enlighten her, allowing her to cultivate into an Immortal."

"Is that so?"

Sun Wukong was even more puzzled.

This Sweeping Star surely has secrets.

Days passed by, Sun Wukong spent each day stealthily reading books, unable to extricate himself from his addiction.

But after all, he was a seeker of immortality, merely reading without practicing cultivation would easily arouse suspicion in the Heavenly Palace.

The Immortals also imparted some basic Daoist Skills to him, and Sun Wukong dedicated certain time to cultivation.

The most obvious change this brought was that every time the young man came to find him, he would see Sun Wukong with a bruised and swollen face.

"What's been happening to you recently, to always end up like this?"

The young man couldn't help his laughter.

"Sweeping Star."

Sun Wukong replied with three words.

Once mana was involved, Sweeping Star became a nightmare.

The misfortune on her seemed to spread like a virus, affecting those around her.

With the increase of mana, the misfortune that befell Sun Wukong grew even greater.

However, this didn't make Sun Wukong stay away; on the contrary, it sparked his curiosity about this odd power, leading him to start researching the patterns of Sweeping Star's misfortune.

He soon made an important discovery.

Sweeping Star's misfortune was triggered by mana; the close encounters with danger she faced daily were due to her mana inadvertently spreading around, creating the phenomena of misfortune.

"This is quite interesting."

Sun Wukong found it immensely intriguing and began researching spells to reduce the misfortune of Sweeping Star.

After learning the Great Tribulation Texts, it became more convenient for him to invent new spells.

Just as he was about to succeed, the young man came to find him again.

"I am going to meditate in seclusion for a few years."

He said so.

Sun Wukong was puzzled: "Why the sudden decision to go into seclusion?"

"I might become an Immortal."

The young man shrugged: "Didn't expect ascending to immortality could be so easy."

A disciple who had come to return books overheard and couldn't help but cast an envious look at him.

"You have excellent talents."

Sun Wukong praised the young man, though he did not spend much time becoming an Immortal.

"Well, I will be leaving now, I'll look for you after I come out of seclusion."

The young man waved goodbye.

Sun Wukong watched him leave.

After the young man left, Sun Wukong fell into slight contemplation.

"Could he really be the Jade Emperor?"

Sun Wukong had always suspected the young man was the Jade Emperor; the Jade Emperor's surname was Zhang, and so was this guy's, even his name contained the character 'Yu'.

Zhang Yu, it was almost like a blatant declaration to others that he was the Jade Emperor.

But the more this was the case, the more Sun Wukong was unsure.

Character-wise, although both enjoyed playing Go, there were significant differences.

The Jade Emperor was cunning and cautious, whereas the young man was carefree and breezy.

No matter how Sun Wukong saw it, Zhang Yu was not the Jade Emperor he knew.

"Forget it..."

Sun Wukong decided to focus on Sweeping Star first.

He had an intuition that Sweeping Star's power would play an important role in the future, and he should find a way to win her over.

Emperor Donghua continued to interact with Sweeping Star; she did not agree but did not report the matter either.

After observing for a while longer, Sun Wukong believed there was hope.

Sweeping Star clearly had interest in Wanling Country, it was only that Emperor Donghua's conditions were not yet tempting enough for her.

"In that case..."

Sun Wukong returned to the Wanling Hall, engraved the newly created spell on a rune, and handed it over to Emperor Donghua.

Sweeping Star's most significant concern was her unshakable misfortune, Sun Wukong judged this to be a breakthrough point.

The rune could only solve Sweeping Star's problem for a short time, but it was enough to show her the importance Wanling Country placed on her.

Not long after, Sun Wukong saw that one day, Sweeping Star miraculously did not suffer any harm.

That day, Sweeping Star was exceptionally happy.

Some time later, Emperor Donghua reported 'success' to Sun Wukong.

Sweeping Star agreed to go to Wanling Country.

However, considering the Heavenly Palace's care, she would not bring any Immortal Books along.

Fortunately, Sun Wukong did not need those Immortal Books.
