The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 226: Chief Competition

In the morning, Sweeping Star looked at Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong was sprawled on the table, deeply asleep, and she called him for a long time but he didn't wake up.

Just as Sweeping Star was considering whether to share some of the misfortune with him, Sun Wukong opened his eyes.

"Are you finally awake?"

Sweeping Star asked coldly.

"Yes."

Sun Wukong stretched lazily.

He had returned to Wanling Hall once.

As long as Zhuang Zhou's dream of the butterfly wasn't resolved, the butterflies would remain within the original body, and his mortal body wouldn't disappear, so he could occasionally go back.

That's why he hadn't been discovered leaving over the years.

"Come with me."

Sweeping Star called Sun Wukong and pushed open the grand doors of the Scripture Pavilion.

"Come in!"

She led Sun Wukong inside: "His Majesty has commanded that you can now read the books on the first floor."

After the mistrust of Shangqing was removed, they were no longer so wary of Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong began looking through the Scripture Pavilion.

Although it was just one floor, the Heavenly Books here were as numerous as stars, from "Summoning Immortals" and "Divination," to "Fasting and Guarding Grain," and "Stillness and Inaction," all types of genres were present.

"Sweeping Star, I should..."

Sun Wukong turned his head and saw a lion swallowing Sweeping Star's head.

He walked over and, grabbing Sweeping Star's feet, pulled her out.

"Thank you."

Sweeping Star shooed away the lion and wiped the saliva off her head: "You're quite strong."

"I've helped a cow give birth."

Sun Wukong replied.

Sweeping Star paused, then said: "From now on, you'll be the manager on this floor, logging the register of books borrowed and returned."

Sun Wukong complied.

Later, he moved into the Scripture Pavilion.

During this period, the location where the youth and he played chess was also moved to the Scripture Pavilion.

The Scripture Pavilion floated in the clouds, and the two often sat by the window playing chess, with the sky outside the window providing a stunning view.

Playing chess with the youth over time, Sun Wukong's chess skills greatly improved.

The improvement in chess skills brought him some joy, and often they would spend half a day, watching the setting sun or reaching out to pick stars.

Since the youth always brought some Heavenly Books, Sun Wukong was thankful and would occasionally share with the youth his understanding of the Immortal Dao.

However, the youth preferred playing chess, and whatever he told him, went in one ear and out the other.

"What is Go to you?"

Sun Wukong felt that the youth's obsession with Go was terrifying.

"It is the Immortal Dao."

The youth replied: "A world of clear black and white, an infinite universe, this is the Immortal Dao I am seeking."

Sun Wukong couldn't quite understand.

"To you, then, what are books?"

The youth curiously asked Sun Wukong.

To him, Sun Wukong's obsession with books was similarly extreme.

"Books... are perhaps like stars."

Sun Wukong answered: "The kind of things that make one really want to collect them."

"Collect?"

The youth looked puzzled: "Collect them for what?"

"To find answers."

Sun Wukong turned to look out the window, where a woman was being carried away by an immortal crane.

"Look at the stars outside that window, I understand each one of them, gather their trajectories to comprehend and find the operational laws of the entire starry sky."

Sun Wukong said: "The more stars I understand, the more accurate the answers I get, the fewer I see, the more mistaken the answers."

The youth frowned: "What can the answers you seek bring you?"

"The future."

Sun Wukong replied.

The youth suddenly laughed: "Perhaps we are quite alike."

He too was pursuing the future.

In his eyes, the game of Go, with its black and white pieces, resembled the countless stars scattered across the sky.

Sun Wukong sought to understand the stars, while he aimed to control them.

"Although I don't understand what answer you're looking for,"

the young man said, "perhaps I can help you."

He felt that Sun Wukong was very talented, harboring an ambition to keep him under his control.

To control someone, one must offer them corresponding rewards.

"In simple terms, you want to read more books, right?"

The young man said to Sun Wukong, "Then wait for my good news!"

Sun Wukong did not receive any good news, but rather bad news.

One day, Sweeping Star suddenly approached him.

"I forgot to tell you, the new disciples will have a Spell competition the day after tomorrow."

"Spell competition?"

Sun Wukong was stunned: "Why?"

"To determine the chief."

Sweeping Star answered.

Every five years in the Three Thousand Immortal Paths, an evaluation is conducted to select a chief among the new disciples.

Participation was mandatory, but Sun Wukong was not interested.

No one had taught him spells, he read books every day, yet he remained a mortal.

"You can also admit defeat if you don't want to participate."

Sweeping Star said, "But you need to find a way to show your Cultivation progress."

Sun Wukong then organized his notes, compiling them into a book.

During the chief competition, all the disciples gathered at one place, creating a lively scene.

After admitting defeat, Sun Wukong set up a stall nearby and started selling his notes.

His notes unexpectedly became popular, attracting long lines of buyers every day.

This scene attracted the attention of many Immortals.

"What is that young man doing?"

Curious Immortals came to Sun Wukong's stall and bought his notes.

Upon flipping through them, they were pleasantly surprised.

"These notes are quite good!"

Sun Wukong's notes revealed an unexpectedly simple and easy-to-understand grasp of Immortal Dao.

The Immortals found it quite novel and purchased some to teach their disciples.

In just a few days, Sun Wukong made a large sum of money.

On the last day, as he was about to wrap up his stall, the young man approached.

"I am this year's chief."

He said.

Sun Wukong was not at all surprised.

During this competition, the chief could make a request to the Heavenly Palace, which was almost always granted

"I spoke to the Jade Emperor, allowing you access to the second level of the Scripture Pavilion."

The young man said to Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong was startled; this guy was so enthusiastic.

He didn't have much to offer in return.

Sun Wukong looked at the considerable amount of money beside him.

"Take these!"

He gave all the money to the young man, who accepted it straightforwardly.

"Ah..."

Up in the Palace of the Polestar, Shangqing watched this scene through the Immortal Mirror, his expression resigned: "What exactly is Your Majesty doing?"

After all the effort to secure a chief position, Shangqing hinted for half a day that he could switch factions to his own, yet the Jade Emperor ended up being the advocate for that young man.

"Your Majesty indeed has foresight."

Gold Star Taibai stroked his beard.

He was quite pleased; although the Jade Emperor had lost some memories, he clearly still possessed wisdom.

The young man was brimming with talent, and attracting him could do no harm.

Yuqing found Gold Star Taibai's optimism annoying and could only shake his head: "So be it."

Although dissatisfied with the Jade Emperor's request, at least the Jade Emperor had become the chief.

As for Wu Xiang, the books on the second level of the Scripture Pavilion were all Immortal Books, which with his Cultivation, he couldn't read many of.
