The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 195: Dongfang Shuo

Winter departs and spring arrives, another year where a hundred flowers burst into bloom.

Fairy Chang'e received summons and entered Wanling Hall, only to see Sun Wukong and Emperor Donghua sitting together.

"Fairy, I have a favor to ask of you,"

Sun Wukong said.

"Great Saint, please speak,"

Fairy Chang'e did not refuse.

"Our Wanling Country has very few Immortals. Emperor Donghua and I have been recruiting Immortals from all over, but to little effect,"

Sun Wukong spoke.

Fairy Chang'e nodded, she was naturally aware of this.

"Recently, Emperor Donghua divined that a young girl possesses a connection with the Immortal Dao. With proper cultivation, she will certainly become Immortal. If left alone, however, she will undergo reincarnation and only then return to the Immortal Dao,"

Sun Wukong said.

Fairy Chang'e was a bit surprised; to be able to become Immortal even after reincarnation, it seems this girl was truly destined to be one.

"Great Saint, do you mean to have me bring this girl here?"

The Fairy asked.

Sun Wukong nodded: "Indeed so."

"Why don't the Great Saint and the Emperor go in person to fetch her?"

Fairy Chang'e was a little curious.

"Because you have more free time than I."

Sun Wukong thought, as he could see Fairy Chang'e in the library every day, always appearing particularly idle, which is why he called her over.

Of course, such words were best kept to oneself; he still needed a different excuse to voice.

"That girl is in the Southern Continent, which falls under the influence of Heavenly Palace. It's inconvenient for the Emperor and me to go there,"

Sun Wukong explained: "Her talents are of no significant use to Heavenly Palace. If the Fairy were to go invite her, it is unlikely to cause any conflict."

Fairy Chang'e slightly frowned: "What kind of talent does she have?"

"She excels in needlework, skilled in making clothes,"

Sun Wukong replied.

Fairy Chang'e immediately relaxed; this was indeed not an extraordinary talent.

Such a talent would only be valued in a place like Wanling Country, which emphasized technical skills and had flourishing industries that would not miss any kind of talent.

Given Fairy Chang'e's repute in the Heavenly Palace, ordinary Immortals would not trouble her over a girl skilled in needlework and sewing.

"In that case, I shall accept this task,"

Fairy Chang'e said.

"I'll lend you Immortal Zhenyuan's Phoenix Carriage, set off tomorrow,"

Sun Wukong stated.

The next day, Fairy Chang'e boarded the Phoenix Carriage and flew towards the Southern Continent.

The Southern Continent, a remote mountain village, was extremely impoverished. At night, the women gathered together to spin yarn, lighting hemp stalks to illuminate the room.

Concealed among the clouds, the carriage concealed its tracks.

Fairy Chang'e looked down upon the mountain village and in a dilapidated thatched cottage, a maiden in the prime of her youth held a needle, sewing clothes.

Even though the light couldn't reach her, her stitching was divine, and a halo of Immortal Energy encircled her body.

"Indeed, she has the qualifications of an Immortal."

Fairy Chang'e thought to herself and commanded the Phoenix to descend from the clouds, landing outside the village.

The darkness of night suddenly brightened, startling the villagers who came out to kneel in worship.

"We did not know a Fairy would descend. What brings you here?"

A cautious elder knelt at the front and asked.

An Immortal's descent brings celestial auspices, yet he did not know whether it spelled fortune or calamity.

"I belong to the Moon Palace..."

Fairy Chang'e began her introduction but stopped midway, realizing it was no longer correct as she was not a Fairy of the Moon Palace anymore.

"I am Fairy Chang'e, on the order of the Heavenly Venerate of the Western Continent, I have come to escort a girl named Xue Lingyun to Wanling Immortal Country."

She changed her manner of speaking.

The villagers immediate felt both shock and joy.

Wanling Country, isn't that the domain of the Wise Monkey?

The villagers, whose livelihood came from textile work and who had learned their needlework techniques from the "Heavenly Craftsmanship," naturally had heard of Wanling Country.

"Lingyun, come here quickly!"

The elder hurriedly called for Xue Lingyun to come over: "Don't forget to thank the Fairy."

Xue Lingyun was somewhat at a loss, but still knelt on the ground and bowed several times.

"Thank you, Fairy."

"Would you like to come with me to Wanling?"

Fairy Chang'e asked.

"I..."

Xue Lingyun looked back at a middle-aged couple.

"Your parents can come along as well."

Fairy Chang'e continued to say.

The couple was overjoyed and hastily said: "We're willing, willing!"

The villagers all looked at the family of three with envious eyes.

"Come here..."

Fairy Chang'e was about to invite the family to board the carriage when streaks of light appeared in the sky.

"Fairy Chang'e."

Lord Zengzhang, holding an Immortal Artifact, led a host of Heavenly Soldiers and Generals floating in the air, and asked, "What brings you to the Southern Continent?"

"Lord Zengzhang, my respects."

Fairy Chang'e saluted Lord Zengzhang and said: "The Great Saint wishes to find a needle god, and I ask the Lord to allow this."

She sighed in her heart, the Heavenly Palace was indeed very cautious of the Great Saint, to have discovered her actions so quickly.

Lord Zengzhang glanced around the mountain village, looked at Xue Lingyun, and came to know this young girl.

This girl was a natural-born Immortal, but only skilled in needlework - not someone of any particular note or on the Heavenly Palace's list of individuals to watch.

Even if Xue Lingyun became an Immortal, she could not compare to a single Heavenly Soldier or General.

Lord Zengzhang thought to himself, he did not need to offend Sun Wukong over such a trivial matter.

"If that's the case, Fairy, you may take her back!"

Lord Zengzhang said: "However, I hope similar actions will not be repeated in the future."

"I understand."

Fairy Chang'e nodded, and Lord Zengzhang, with the Heavenly Soldiers and Generals, disappeared.

Afterward, the Fairy took Xue Lingyun and a few others, and departed the village in a carriage engulfed in celestial auspicious light.

Before she left, she waved her hand and bestowed some Immortal Energy to the villagers, healing many people's illnesses, for which the villagers were naturally grateful.

What no one noticed was that, in another part of the Southern Continent, just moments before, Emperor Donghua appeared in a thatched hut with a young boy.

"Master, is this my little junior brother?"

The boy looked at the baby wailing in the swaddling clothes.

"How did you know the Heavenly Palace would not notice him?"

He looked towards the Emperor.

Emperor Donghua shook his head; this baby was fated with him and was his disciple. Apart from him, few knew of the child's identity.

Their destined encounter was originally supposed to begin in several decades, but now, with the Heavenly Palace having grand schemes in the Southern Continent, Wanling Country must make some preparations.

In truth, Fairy Chang'e going to fetch Xue Lingyun was but a diversion, allowing the Immortals not to notice the situation here.

Emperor Donghua walked over to the swaddling clothes, carefully picked up the baby, and the Immortal Energy he transmitted stopped the baby's crying immediately.

The Emperor turned back to look at the boy.

The boy nodded immediately.

"Master, rest assured, I will wholeheartedly await my junior brother's return."

A trace of appreciation flashed in Emperor Donghua's eyes.

The boy immediately became happy, knowing that after these ten-odd years, he would receive a reward.

"Why has Shuo'er stopped crying? Let's go in and check."

The voices of two people came from outside the door.

Emperor Donghua pointed a finger towards the boy, who immediately turned into a baby, lying in the bedding and crying loudly again.

"He's started crying again."

A young couple walked into the thatched hut but could no longer see Emperor Donghua.

They checked the baby's condition and found nothing unusual, so they were relieved.
