Heavenly Palace enjoys an eternal spring, but Guanghan Palace was shrouded in chilly clarity.
On this day, Sun Wukong arrived here, landing outside the palace, and could not help but quietly praise it several times.
Guanghan Palace was covered with splendid buildings of jade, all veiled in white clouds and mist, floating ethereally, elegant yet cool.
"Huh?"
A fairy noticed Sun Wukong and flew over to him.
"Are you the virtuous Great Saint?"
The fairy asked.
Sun Wukong nodded: "You recognize me?"
The fairy did not answer, but instead turned around and called out.
"Sisters, Sun Wukong is here, come take a look."
Soon after her call, many fairies drifted out of Guanghan Palace, surrounding Wukong and examining him closely, covering their mouths and giggling.
Sun Wukong was somewhat astonished: "Do you fairies recognize me?"
"We have heard Fairy Chang'e mention you."
The fairies replied.
Sun Wukong understood: "May I ask how to address you fairies?"
"We are Chang'e."
The fairies said.
Sun Wukong was stunned for a moment: "Isn't Fairy Chang'e in Huaguo Mountain?"
"That's Fairy Chang'e, but we are Chang'e."
The fairies replied: "Chang'e are the fairies serving the Deity of the Moon, we are all Chang'e."
Sun Wukong slightly furrowed his brows.
There have always been tales of Chang'e in the Mortal World, but he didn't expect there to be so many Chang'es.
"Mortals are accustomed to describing all the fairies of the Moon Palace as Chang'e."
The fairies noticed Sun Wukong's confusion and said: "When we descend to the mortal realm, we are always assumed to be the same person."
Sun Wukong gradually clarified it.
"So, the Chang'e spoken of by the world are actually different fairies?"
"Exactly."
One of the fairies stepped forward and said: "I am Heng'e Fairy, the one most talked about in mortal legends as Chang'e."
"I am Su'e Fairy."
"I am Neon Fairy."
The other fairies also declared their names.
Sun Wukong greeted them one by one: "You all even have individual names, so how should the Chang'e from Huaguo Mountain be addressed?"
"She is our sister, and she is also called Fairy Chang'e."
The fairies replied: "Her beauty is unmatched, pure and noble, fitting to be the symbol of Chang'e, thus the Deity of the Moon specially granted her the name of Chang'e."
Sun Wukong suddenly understood.
He chatted with the fairies for a while, then suddenly a call came from afar, and Sun Wukong bid farewell to the fairies, approaching an elderly woman.
"Deity of the Moon."
Sun Wukong bowed to the Deity of the Moon.
The Deity of the Moon also known as the Moon Goddess, Lady of the Moonlight, Principal of the Moon, Aunt Moon, and Bodhisattva of the Moonlight—she was the true master of Guanghan Palace.
"Great Saint, I invited you here, how did you end up mingling with the fairies?"
The Deity of the Moon inquired: "Do you know that teasing fairies in Heavenly Palace is a serious offense?"
"Just a few words exchanged."
Sun Wukong replied: "It's not a serious crime."
The Deity of the Moon could not help but smile; she was obviously just joking.
Sun Wukong is a piece of Immortal Stone, how could he have thoughts of teasing fairies.
Had he harbored such intentions, the Deity of the Moon would not have invited him.
The Star Monarch led Sun Wukong into Guanghan Palace, having the Chang'es serve pastries.
"These pastries here might not catch the Great Saint's fancy, so would you enjoy some music and dance instead?"
The Deity of the Moon asked.
"An honor indeed."
Sun Wukong nodded.
The Deity of the Moon then had someone lay out musical instruments, playing the zither and making music, sounding as if it were the divine melody of heaven.
The fairies of the Moon Palace moved with nimble, lotus-like steps, their long sleeves dancing fluidly to the music as they swayed their graceful figures.
Their clothes fluttered in the air, their black hair like ink, ethereal as if divine, Sun Wukong, who is unskilled in song and dance, was nonetheless astounded by the performance.
After enjoying the music and dance, Sun Wukong took his leave.
Just as he stepped out of Guanghan Palace.
"Great Saint, please wait a moment!"
A voice called out.
Sun Wukong turned his head.
"The Matchmaking God."
He bowed to the approaching Matchmaking God.
"Did the Great Saint just visit Guanghan Palace?"
The Matchmaking God asked.
Sun Wukong nodded, "Listened to some music, watched some dances."
The Matchmaking God's mouth gaped as wide as a flat peach, it took him a while to regain his wits, swallowing twice, "You are truly remarkable!"
He had never heard of the fairies of the Moon Palace dancing for someone, and even for the Jade Emperor, he had to summon them.
"Well, now that the Great Saint has come, you must visit this old Daoist's residence."
The Matchmaking God said with a smile, "You mustn't play favorites, you mustn't play favorites!"
Sun Wukong had no choice but to follow the Matchmaking God to a tree that blocked the sky and sun with its size.
"This Acacia tree is indeed large."
Sun Wukong lifted his head, but couldn't see the top of the tree.
The canopy was obscured by clouds and mist.
The Matchmaking God invited Sun Wukong into a tree hole.
This Acacia tree was his home, and inside the tree hole, red threads hung everywhere.
"Don't touch those red threads," the Matchmaking God warned, "be careful of entangling yourself with destinies."
Sun Wukong had heard of these red threads.
"Matchmaking God, do you lead all the romantic fates in the world?"
He asked.
"How could I have such mana?"
The Matchmaking God shook his head, "The matter of romance is ineffable. When men and women meet and get acquainted, red threads encircle their fingers, and when the destined time ends, they break off again."
He rummaged through his home and continued, "My duty is to help the world grasp their destined relationships, to bring destined lovers together."
Sun Wukong nodded.
"Great Saint, I've been lavishly treated at your place for days, and I feel somewhat embarrassed."
The Matchmaking God found some treasured osmanthus wine and an immortal cup from his stash, and said, "Come, let's drink outside."
"Excellent."
Sun Wukong followed him out of the tree hole.
The two sat on the grass.
The Matchmaking God filled a cup with osmanthus wine for Sun Wukong and said, "It suddenly occurs to me, compared to humans, Huaguo Mountain's red threads are much more entangled."
"Huaguo Mountain does not heed the conventions of matchmaking..."
Sun Wukong replied.
He knew that the human world still valued the conventions of matchmaking.
Huaguo Mountain was open-minded about love, barely managed it, and combined with demons' naturally free nature, their romantic liaisons were much freer than humans.
"Is entanglement a bad thing?"
Sun Wukong asked.
"Not at all."
The Matchmaking God shook his head, smiling, "It's just quite novel."
He noticed Sun Wukong's fingers.
Only the Matchmaking God could see, some red threads were faintly visible around Sun Wukong, but none could stick to him.
Only one thread seemed a bit closer than the others.
But it would take not just a hundred or eighty years to fully form.
"I wonder which devoted fairy will fall for this rock."
The Matchmaking God couldn't help but think.
No fairy would have a lifespan long enough to wait for the rock to awaken.
